I have an irrational hatred for jazz. Literally any jazz (especially with electric organ/piano, or wild saxophone solos....just drives me nuts).  I tried really hard to get into Jaco, Mingus etc when I was a beginner, but I just can't.

Separate volume controls annoy me no end. Pan knob please.

Both seem perfectly rational to me.

Singers who roam out into the crowd and flirt with the audience. The band is on stage, the crowd aren't and the lines must not be crossed unless there's a fire

.....I might have forgotten to take my meds today so it's back to the padded room for me

As ever - context is everything.

I saw a band on Friday night Papa Shango.

Adult rock (Limp Bizkit?)  pantomime on steroids is how I'd describe it.

Female and male lead singers, 4 backing singers and a lead guitarist wandering around the floor. Rhythm, bass and drums occasionally joining them.

Walking round the audience with squirty cream, biscuits, water pistols, it was a full on audience participation.

If they're playing local go and watch it, even if the music isn't your cup of brandy.

I'm all for that kind of ridiculousness. We have a tendency to take ourselves far too seriously.

Papa Shango

Was it The Papashangos?

Singer strips down to bodystocking and suspenders - stocky baldy fella? Merch included branded Buttplugs?

If so they're relatively straightahead punk - they were on at Rebellion right before us, they were tight as and lots of fun though some may think them a touch frivolous. I liked 'em!

Having just looked up Papa Shango I see they're completely different... Punky ones don't have face paint.

And if you're careful you may see me in the crowd here 😁

Don't know if this one is an irrational prejudice or just a part of my evolutionary journey but here goes: 4 string basses. Despite me learning to play on them!

I agree. Not enough strings or note-position choices. Too thin a neck.

Yet most pop songs in the past 70 years have a 4-string bass guitar on the track, and many bassists are very musical and capable on a 4 string bass.

I don't think Jaco would have been philosophically against more than 4 strings, he had a 5-string acoustic bass he played in his off-time. But the Fenders were available and familiar instruments. If he'd managed to get on top of his issues and had been around for longer, who knows what he might have explored.
