50’s p bass Pickup help needed pls

Recommended Posts

After a fairly average 60/70’s set last week I managed to totally destroy the pup in my 54 squier p

As a player that rests my thumb on the pup, it’s obviously too much pressure on the coil.
is there any kind of cover available, or some sort of attachment I can place either on or close to the pickup to give me somewhere to place my thumb?
any help gratefully received. 😉👍

Surely it must have been a defective pickup?  I'm sure you're strong but your thumb isn't a hammer or a hydraulic press!  I've never seen anything like this in my life.

It was a Toltec.

I just don't understand how it could have happened.

In the end, I got one of these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/296340578499?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=3uuiAC21SGW&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It seems to be 3d printed, but is exactly the thing.

Leaving the link here for reference for others.

I’m not sure I want to drill holes in my bass yet, and I object to the cost of postage from the States. So I’m using a mini suction cup as a temporary solution.

Couldn't you just use a thumb rest and stick it on with 3M VHB double sided tape?

Good point (assuming the adhesive on the tape wouldn’t impact the lacquer)

  • 2 weeks later...

the thumbrocker arrived on Saturday, and I installed it for a show on Sunday.

Once it's attached (which can be a little tough if you like the pickup low in the body) it works brilliantly

In the meantime waiting fir it to arrive, I used a command strip and clear hook in its place, which also worked well
