Well everyone has probably seen the brilliant bass shredding Matt Freeman manages in Rancid.

This guy is pretty damn awesome.

Fairly complex and well thought out punk rock....I believe they call it tech punk!

Some amazing tapping about 18 secs in.

It sounds amazing on record.

PS they are called A Wilhelm Scream.

I pretty much worship punk/hardcore bands that dare to have a better bassist than the guitarist.

I cannot stand it when the bass is mega low in the mix. This is my gripe with Metallica! In fact a lot of metal..turn the bloody bass up and stop using the same old boring screechy distortion.

Outstanding. Great melodic bass playing - lead bass in hardcore/punk is a rarity...but done well, it is what MAKES the band.

This is a great example of judicious use of different styles which enhance the song - as opposed to fretboard w@nkery for the sake of it!

I've heard Moby called technopunk, which I thought was ludicrous. I can appreciate Moby's musicality but I absolutely cannot stand his music! I want to go on a rampant killing spree when I hear it! :)

Yes I see what you mean with the classification...i think they just mean tech as in technical....obvious its a rarity in punk so it gets a sub genre!

Ive just sat learnt it all slow motion...and its not actually that hard...Ive never properly tapped in my life and im fairly smug that Ive got it sorted....apart from the ludicrous speed. 30 mins a day for a week...see what it sounds like then! Sounds weird with the bass not plugged in though. Must be much better on a Stingray with the active pickup.

Youve all probs seen but this shredding is also cool....its how I learnt to play uber quick with a pick...

Absolutely. Seeing 'tapping' used in context is great.. there are too many You Tube videos of rubbish out there that probably puts most people off using such a fantastic musical technique.

I'm enjoyin' these vids.. Couple of bands I haven't heard of too... so keep them coming! - I'm a bit of a prog freak.. so there's no point posting some vids.. I guess you expect the bass players to be all over the shop anyway! (Rush etc)

Anyway.. I'm enjoyin' this thread so lets see some more!

I am very fond of Loney Dear.

(from Wiki)

'Loney, Dear is the pseudonym of Swedish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanängen. He has self-released four albums of music in his native Sweden'

I am very impressed with him mainly due to the fact he plays every damn instrument on his album AND sings AND recorded a lot of it at home on a little recording rig.

Plus I like the fretless sound on this track a lot.

He might not be up with some of the ones above but I like him and his music quite a bit.

Have a listen and tell me what you think. I am still way off his standard but would love to learn that track.

Another A Wilhlem Scream video. Check about 1min40 for a nice bass fill. This guy just fills all over the place. I bet it takes a fair while to remember all those start/stop parts!

Great bassist, and a nice guy, had a many a chat with him about the pros and cons of Jazzes and Precisions.
Wait a minute... They're a metal band. Aren't they supposed to have very technical guitarists?

They don't seem to fit in this thread very well.
Metal? These guys are proud punks! I think A Wilhlem Scream have techincal guitarists and the bassist and drummer are also very high standard musicians. Not billions of solos, more mainic riffage.
Roger Manganelli from Less Than Jake. Manic bass lines, plus you have to love those dreads lol
Big fat +1, although, Less Than Jake are ska, and busy bouncy basslines are fairly common.

I'm suprised people are suprised at good bassists and good basslines in Punk though, people like JJ Burnel and Paul Simonon are just examples of more good bassists who put interesting lines to their songs.

Although I'll concede pop-punk does seem to love straight 8th lines.

To quote my guitarist...who really needs to get practicing how to do solos..he states: 'Anyone can play bass...its so simple'.

To which I replied : 'You definitely cannot play bass...you have NO rhythm'. Which is completely true. I watched him play mine..he plays three notes and his hands hurt on the big frets hahahahah.

So...its easy to pick up the basics on bass, but to master it, you have to play it like its own instrument, and not just a 4 string guitar. I like playing some rhythm guitar, but it just doesnt feel the same.

Its good to see modern punk bass players filling the songs with melodic runs and tapping...anyone know of any others? I know Mike from NOFX is EXTREMELY quick with his pick.

Oh good lord I would kill for that opportunity. He's the guy that inspired me to pick up a bass when I was 11 and he is hands down my favourite vocalist on the planet. He is absolutely my no.1 musical hero! Tell us more!

Another big +1 from me for Brian Robinson in A Wilhelm Scream, seen them live twice, spoke to him outside the venue both times, really nice guy, absolutely tight player. If you haven't got their album "Career Suicide", get it, they're awesome musicians, and listening to the bass throughout just wants to make me weep with shame. Really fitting fills, harmonising with the guitars or just off doing his solo in "Jaws 3, People 0"

Yea, they're my favourite band!

Shame about the vocals.

Each to his own, I guess. This does nothing for me.
