Flatwound string close ups...

This is a very interesting thread. Can I ask what maybe a daft question? Are the strings in the OP’s photo’s all under tension. I’m presuming so as gaps in the windings in photo’s 2 & 4 are quite significant/more than I thought they would be for flats. Gonna have to get one of those magnifiers. Didn’t even know they existed.

Yep they are on the bass and under tension, I think it’s the gaps in the winding which make the ti’s feel so smooth, reducing the friction

I've got a couple of those clip-on phone lenses and I must say, my 12-year old, 10MP-or-so very mini, compact Canon with 6x optical zoom still knocks the spots off anything coming from a phone plus one of those thingies.

Whoa - talk about buzz kill. It’s just a bit of fun Silvia. If I could get my lad to put down his phone, let alone pick up a camera instead, that would be an achievement. Best of both worlds here - something he can add to his phone and makes the photo’s slightly different.

Just picked up some Ernie ball group 3 flats today, interesting how big the gaps are on the windings, and the angled winding on the G string!

close up they look similar to the TI flats

Going to play them like crazy for a month then take another closeup, see how much gunk for the funk I’ve managed to accumulate!

I’ll be interested how much accumulates, I’ve had some flats on for years, great pictures 👍

I’d really like to see some close up of some chromes to see how they compare to the Ernie ball, I’ve heard people comment that they are the same string just rebranded, they certainly my don’t feel the same, would be good to get a good close up of them.
