Waddycall Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Just fitted a fretless Jazz neck to my Mexican P. Wish Iâd tried fretless years ago. cant stop playing along to Graceland! Listening to that album inspired me to give it a go. hopefully Iâll get the hang of it enough to take it to band practice one day. Iâll spare them the the pain for now. 7 Quote
ezbass Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 We donât need no stinking frets. đ Enjoy; take it to rehearsals ASAP, itâs the best way to make it your best bud. 2 Quote
Waddycall Posted January 26, 2020 Author Posted January 26, 2020 Just discovered the joys of jamming along to  synth  âaahsâ playing an e minor chord. Must try some other chords! Quote
Grahambythesea Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Good for you, a tip, try not to look, use your ears!đ Youâll soon get the hang of it. 1 Quote

Waddycall Posted February 8, 2020 Author Posted February 8, 2020 A couple of weeks later I am completely hooked. Taken this to two band practices now and love it. Weâre a three piece originals rock band and it really seems to work. The only thing it lacks is a bit of top end sparkle. Any suggestions on how to get some? Iâve got new rotosound 66s on. Would a bass with a bridge pickup have a bit more sizzle? Quote
BreadBin Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Use roundwound strings if you want top end. 1 Quote

Grahambythesea Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 More treble in the eq. Possibly a little bit of chorus too, I believe thatâs Pinoâs solution on âwhere ever I lay my hatâ. 1 Quote
KiOgon Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 @Waddycall changing the pots for higher value, cap. for lower value ie; from 250K to 500K pots and from 0.1 or .047 to .033 or .022uF will help đ 1 Quote

Most people advise lined fretless. Having tried both I very much disagree. So long as you have side dots on the note, not where they'd be on a fretted you'll be fine with unlined. As G says let your ears do the playing. Far from being scary and restricting I found unlined liberating and very satisfying. I now regard frets as like stabilisers on a kid's bike, and lined fretless as not much better.  Edited February 8, 2020 by lownote12 1 Quote
ezbass Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I tried playing with my ears, but they kept rolling over and my chin was continually muting. I donât recommend it. Oh, is that my coat? Itâs ok, Iâll get it myself. 2 Quote

Would a bass with a bridge pickup have a bit more sizzle? A Boss Bass Limiter/ Enhancer on the recommended "enhance" setting from the manual. Or the Behringer clone. Really helped get some character out of my Fretless (then I got a multi fx with loads of Fretless presets... And as its a Boss multi I can throw in an LMB-2 emulator too on any effects I want) Quote
