I remember years ago trying to figure out these very same riffs (same gig) sat on my living room carpet, video remote in hand, frustratingly jogging back and forth... and giving up. The comments on the youtube clips are amazing...really slagging him off. I always thought he was perfect to be opposite old "big nose" and complemented him and his ego really well. I never could understand what happened to his sound later, the stuff I've heard with Warwick and Status basses just sounds thin and over effected to me...but I'm sure this is more to do with his choice of effects/signal chain than the basses themselves? It's always been my impression that JE was the "musician" in the band. Probably the first bassist that I locked into in my pre-musician days, which must count for something. lowhand_mike Posted October 23, 2008 Share Posted October 23, 2008 yep never get sick of seeing those vids. i've tried emulating that sound a few times and really want to learn that whole song but haven't had the substantial time required to do it. regarding the tone i found almost slapping the strings down onto the fretboard with your fingers works quite well, rather than the normal "brushing" of your finger across the tops of the strings for standard finger style. so laid back playing that its annoying Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Over a pint recently he cool as you like told me he knew The OX pretty well as he had done his PR work for his art exhibitions in LA...What?......younever told me this when he was alive ffs. I have seen them before and have used the WGFA one to learn the bass part as we do it in my band. Great stuff isn't it? it surprised me along with all the pyrotechnics in the playing how many spaces and pauses he leaves. a masterclass in tasteful rock bass playing IMHO I may have mentioned on here before that it was seeing some footage of The Ox with his Explorer bass standing in front of a mass of Sunn cabs belting out mighty sounds that inspired me as a callow youth to want to be a bass player. Took until I was 40 something to finally play Wont get fooled with a band for real. i think we do a good job of it too! perhaps I'll post it here one day.
