I've had this brewing in my head ever since the first RIP thread of 2016, and mine would have been a lot more unsympathetically entitled "Dead Pop Stars (Rotting In The Studio)". Here on Basschat we tend to fall into the older age groups and probably our "heroes" are going to be older still. Therefore it's not really going to be much of a surprise that they are now coming to an age when their life expectancy is getting shorter all the time. Added to the fact that even if you don't go mad on sex and drugs, the "rock n roll lifestyle" in the early part of your career is hardly the kindest to the human body, and I imagine it must be much the same for actors, comedians and anyone else following a creative path. There is nothing extra special about 2016. In fact I expect 2017 to be just as "bad" for celebrity deaths. And most of it is down to social media. Many of the people who have passed away this year would have done so almost without being noticed except for a few column inches in whatever specialist publications cared enough. About 4 months ago some young lad jumped under the train I was driving at Tottenham Court Road station. He never made it. I feel sorry for his family but I never knew his name or why he did what he did. I was taken away from the scene almost immediately while the emergency services did their bit. [/quote] A driver can have as little or as much time off as he needs. It will need to be covered by a doctors cert though. London Underground offers a counseling scheme which is excellent. Certain people - whether through music, film or TV - become part of the framework of your existence. You don't know them as you would a family member or friend but you still kind of form attachments to them, a sort of fondness, almost as if you did somehow know them. When they die they no longer touch your life in the same way and so that part of your life has passed. As you get older the number of those people will have got older and start dying off in greater numbers. Therefore you are reminded that the end of your own life is approaching ever nearer. We've just 'heard' of them through their work, and their (mostly recorded) work is unaffected by whatever ailments they may be suffering or their eventual deaths. Also, we know little or nothing about them as people, which is odd when you think about how many people will say "I really like(d)" so-and-so, when all they can really mean is that they like their work. We see this time and again with actors. I'm sure we all have a favourite actor even without knowing them personally, but what it usually amounts to is that we really like the roles and characters they have played in their career because, let's be honest, what else can we know about them? And if/when we do learn about the real them, whose to say we'd actually like them? Anyone here still a fan of Gary Glitter even though you may have enjoyed his music back in the day? I'd just read a friends post on Facebook that said 'what an awful year 2016 had been, lost so many celebs'. I'm 55 in a few weeks time. Most of the people I grew up watching on TV and listening to on the radio (wireless) are in their 70's and 80's.
