Different people want different things from compressors, and what is ideal for one person won't be for others. I too have a BBE OptoStomp, and I also like it. Boss LMB-3 is £64 on Amazon right now. Plenty of people use them and are happy with them (providing they keep the 'Enhance/Noise' knob turned down). Personally, I'd go for a Zoom MS-60B. Yes, its a multi-fx, but the compressor models are decent and very configurable, and there's no rule that says you can't use it like a single pedal if you want to. I've got an MXR M87 on my board, but recently I've just been going out with my MS-60B and a valve preamp/DI and using the dbx 160A model on the 60B which works very well for the light compression that I want. On the downside it doesn't have any metering, but it's easy enough to set up by ear alone. And you've got 57 other effects models there if you want them. I use the optical compressor and the reviews on Ovnilab compare it favourably with the BBE Optostomp and the 5 knob comp has a good review. Not for everyone but something to consider. That aside, the HG is a good compressor out of the box but when it really comes in to its own is when paired with the TonePrint app. When I'm not typing on my mobile I'll add more info - but at the moment I would say that under the bonnet there is access to every parameter you can possibly think that you might need and a whole bunch you don't know you need. One of my favourites is the ability to assign the knobs to other parameters than those labelled. Very cool. The triple bands are totally adjustable and you can save your own TonePrints depending on what you are using the pedal for. I've some cool 'valve-like' settings, sub bass boost, hifi comp, old skool fingerstyle, tapping frenzy solo boost and good ole squish sounds. I have only good experiences with my TC pedals. Sometimes when people say they found a compressor noisy it could be that adding a compressor amplified existing noise from their other pedals. Just a thought. Tone prints are really cool, and the possibility of setting up your own favourite compressor in the editor is tempting. Could lead to many wasted hours too I guess. [/quote] The other thing I noticed that isn't mentioned in the manual is the truly bonkers amount of gain available on the sweep of the level knob. In the app it suggests being able to set up in the order of 50dB. Even if it were just 20, I would challenge even the very best compressors to not amplify signal chain noise.
