Born under a bad sign Posted January 5, 2015 Author Share Posted January 5, 2015 I have taken on board all the comments, visited a shop yesterday and tried out everything 4 string below £500 (plus one Jazz in sea foam green for £650, wow what a colour...very tempted) Love CV and VM range and I know my current level of skill is way below their potential. I didn't buy one as I want to go for used and prepared to wait I did however buy Mrs BS tickets for Neil Diamond in Blackpool this July. Now able to hunt down a bass and tutor guilt-free. I love the idea of getting a new bass that closely resembles the old one (reminds me of my golfing days, "that club darling, that is old, had it ages" Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Good move on the tickets. It pays to keep them onside. As my wife regularly points out, I'm at least two vertebrae short of being self-sufficient.... You obviously have an iron will. I'm incapable of going into a guitar shop and walking out empty handed but go you - buying second hand will get you a lot more for your money. The only thing I'd add is that you might budget about £50-75 for a really good setup with a local luthier (not necessarily the bloke in the back room at the local shop). You might be lucky and get something that's already set up nicely - and if you buy on BC there's probably a better chance of that - but if not, spending a few pounds having a proper fret dress, clean, restring and set up will give you something that will be so much easier to play - and give you the confidence that if something doesn't sound right, you know it's technique you need to work on rather than trying to figure out whether it's you or the instrument... They always come up on here for around £150 - 200 and are outstanding. I've got 3. Even more left for lessons which I would definately recommend. I'm sure there's a BC member near you who'd be pleased to stop the problem. That has to be worth looking at. Edit: BTW, what IS the plank anyway? Is it any good when it's working? synthaside Posted January 5, 2015 Share Posted January 5, 2015 The Vultures are circling on the plank :-P, you could always look at upgrading the pickups on your old plank i was amazed what a set of pickups installed by me from Broken for parts J did for my bitsa Jazz. I'm also 100% behind the really great setup , Charlie chandlers who does mine ( i'm lucky to live near his Kingston / Ham store) does wonder for my Tbird and my Status , they come out feeling amazing its the best 50 quid you can spend new fancy nanoweb nonsense be damned . You'd find a lot < 300 quid in the for sale section here I know you've currently got a P bass so maybe spending a little on a new P pickup to fix the technical issues , especially if you like the neck. I had new strings and the action lowered on it and the intonation isn't bad, but it just doesn't float my boat, so want something else, rather than upgrade. I don't need additional motivation to play but it would be nice to have a bass that inspires me. Farrida, FenderJazz, Bass Collection... All great suggestions I'm sure, but you are seriously overloading my braincell with too much choice. [/quote] Great video, I have two of the MIJ Fender Re-Issues. The Sting Bass and the Butterscotch one with the black pick guard. I plan on using them more at gigs this year. A few years back, I think 2009, I purchased both of these Fender Made In Japan Re-Issues for $500.00 [i]"US Green Backs"[/i] a piece with cases. I still think it was a good deal. I don't know why I don't gig them more often. They are good looking,great sounding and fun basses to play. BTW, these MIJ P's, at least my vintage, are great for you guys that prefer the thinner Jazz Bass necks. However, I'm sort of on the fence with the maple fret board. I'm more of a rose wood guy. I've a MIJ P bass - split coil variety, but with the tele style headstock. Currently waiting on a refret - but when it get's rockin' again. Japanese P necks do tend to be nice and slender.
