Jaco - The Documentary

Agree with OP although the tone and perspective is important. Whilst I think Jaco's music and impact are incredible and must have been over-whelming when they broke-out in the early-mid '70s, his genius had a sad flaw.

I hope the doc gets the balance right... There have been a few biogs - the infamous Milkowski bood (which I quite enjoyed although those close to Jaco say it was inaccurate). To my mind though, Charles Shaar Murray's BBC radio documentary is the best and I hope the film takes its queues from this. Some personal eulogies are better than others. I find Joe Hubbard's fact based version just puts him on a pedestal too much: http://www.joehubbar...now-about-jaco/
Such lists obscuring his genuine innovations and talent, and ignoring the contributions of the legions of people who helped Jaco along the way, e.g. re. orchestration and composition, where he got pretty intensive 1:1 training from Charlie Brent and Peter Graves.

So I hope the doc strikes the right mix. Anyway, I like Will Lee's musical memories of Jaco: https://www.youtube....d&v=RfhkkFcGo0c

Yep, WL's memories are great, and agree regarding his composition and orchestrating.
Yes it will be boring to some (most?).

I'm really looking forward to the film. From what i remember there was no great fanfare when Jaco appeared on Ira Sullivan's LP (he was even listed as 'Joco' on the sleeve) in 1975 and then on Pat Metheny's 'Bright Size Life' the same year. Neither album sold many copies and both got the similar review of 3 out of 5 stars which was how albums were reviewed back then. I think that they initially sold about one thousand copies of BSL. No one raved about the Metheny album or Jaco's playing from what i can remember and although he'd been heard by a lot more people the previous year on Little Beaver's 'I Can Dig It Baby' we didn't know it was him at the time!

Of course we all know that his fame really took of with Weather Report but even when he appeared with his Word Of Mouth Band at Hammersmith in 1982(?) you could probably have bought a ticket on the night. It was a much different world back then. Jaco seems more popular now than ever. I never tire of Jaco's playing and look forward to watching the film.

I can't wait to see it. Can never have enogh Jaco in my book.

Maybe I'm all the more fascinated as he died when I about 13, so I had no idea until some years later who he even was.

To me, not being there at the time, I suppose it's Jaco the legend I've taken from. I'm sure it wasn't all good, as in the biography.

I do recognize his talent and musicality and understand why it fascinates a lot of bassists, don't get me wrong.
He was indeed one of the greatest ever.

But music like the stuff he did in Weather Report etc. is just not for everyone.
I can't listen to it (or any other jazzy stuff from that era) for more then 2 minutes or I will want to break stuff. It just gets on my nerves.

Funny thing really, taste is.

In the meantime here's "Modern Electric Bass for y'all to chew on".
