There are a lot people frankly taking the piss on prices e.g. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/237776-darkglass-vintage-microtubes/ - £150
vs http://www.thomann.de/gb/darkglass_microtubes_vintage_bass_overd.htm#bewertung - £170 new.

Agree to a point, but then you see this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/221210827655?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108

Prices of a lot of things have dropped quite a bit over the last 6 months or so. There was a guy selling a TC HOF on here a few weeks ago, it was only about £10 less than a new one, but he'd paid a whole lot more for it only 6 months previous, and didn't realise the price had dropped so much.

There are a number of factors at play here, in no particular order
1 people have less disposable income at the moment
2 the recent drop in some pieces of gear (digitech bass synth wah £30 brand new from GAK, 6 months ago they were that Much for a good used one and some sellers still holding on for what they paid) then having to drop the price to sell
Instead of being realistic to start with
3 the weakened £ over the last few years combined with corporations need to make profit in tough times, factory price goes up then bought with a weaker £ means the brand new In store cost is higher which inflates the second hand market
4 the luck of the cycle, I would hate to be trying to sell a musicman on here at the moment, there are tons of them! A couple of months back it was fender everywhere. Same with amps, 18 months ago markbass was all the rage, now there are others about like genz offering as good at lower price. It's all about supply and demand.
5 Brand perception plays a big factor, fender is one of the few brands that consistently moves on here IF it is priced right, but anything slightly odd or modded too much won't, it's wierd. Warwick is a 50/50 but other mid to high spec gear like spector and fernandes could take a lifetime to shift if you don't want to drop you pants.

Personally though, it think the biggest issue is the number of new instruments being made, it has to be having a detrimental effect on the second hand market through competition. Dan Larkin for example (the guy who founded lakland then Sold to ESP) has started another bass company taking Joe Osbourne and Bob Glaub with him. Guess what, he is pretty much making exactly the same basses he was before, so now there are even more of them. As we all know Leo Fender did the same thing, twice! It's surely not sustainable in the long run, is it??

I agree with this. Warwick stuff is especially bad for this (or good if you're wanting a warwick I suppose). New value of them is huge (to the point where it's a bit ridiculous IMO) but sell second hand for a fraction of that. I mean I got my corvette for less than £400!
warwicks are actually a fair bit up in price on where they were a few years back. :)
I felt really sorry for the fella with the nice looking TC electronics RH750 and cabs - at not a bad price for a while - just before the shops slashed the new prices to be cheaper than his secondhand price :(

I don't know if my prices are way off, but I've had two Fender jazzers up for a while with absolutely zero interest.... not a peep. Think i'll either leave them here or just withdraw them and hang on to them, I'm really not wanting to go down the ebay route.

Some basses seem to get put up at ridiculous prices though... sees to be a theme at the moment with putting fender jazz deluxes up at £20 less than the new price...

I think it is down to people having no money but then again I have seen basses on here between £1500 and £3000 sell on here quickly maybe the "older" generation that seem to buy them have plenty of dosh kicking about lol.

I think it is a struggle to sell anything in the £300-£500 price bracket on BC at present and I don't know why as there are some good bargains on here I have never had much luck selling bass guitars on BC depite putting the basses up for sale for the price I paid or slightly less and have normally made sales through gumtree or ebay which is a shame as it is great to deal within the BC community

I've sold precisely three basses on Basschat and they all sold very quickly. One was for £1475, one was for £295 and one was for £90, so quite a spread of price points. Each one had an exhaustive description, lots and lots of large, good-quality photographs and detailed information about packing and delivery plus a link to my feedback so people could easily check it. They were also priced very reasonably, in my opinion.

Or maybe I was just lucky! :)

Although i've sold basses on BC i've had much more success selling on a popular auction site than i have on here.

Some were 60s and 70s basses around the £200-£400 mark which were more for collectors rather than for pros so maybe that was the reason.

My own take on that is that, as a general rule, guitars in the "expensive" price bracket are fairly rare (you don't see all that many Foderas up for sale, for instance). So if you want to buy a second hand one you need to be prepared to move quickly.

Cheaper guitars, again as a general rule, are much more common. Want to buy a MIM Fender? You can afford to be picky and wait for one locally you can go and inspect in person. Plus---and I'm really reaching here---I think most of us probably already have instruments that are at least as good as anything you can buy for £300-£500. So when times are tight there's a slight element of "why bother?" with these instruments.
