Hi All,
Ive been offered a 70's Fender Jazz at a great price but Im a little bit confused about the serial number. There is no sn on the headstock. There is however one on the neck plate. Its a three bolt neck with binding and block inlays. The seller is a genuine guy who I know personally but I dont want to get stuck with a dodgey bass. I think its a 76 model and he wants 950euro for it. Whats the verdict ??

Three-bolt neckplate was introduced on Jazzes in 74 .Serial number above the F in between the two top screws, this stayed until 76 when it moved to the headstock. Blocks & binding would be right. Tuners should have the Fender logo on, with the R for registered trademark above the last r. On the bridge, all of the screws should be the same length, and the saddles adjusted by two screws in the top.

Oh, and being a 70s Fender, it should be heavy, so the rumours go :)

Wow, Im really thankfull for such a great reply @loz196.
You have just described this bass in great detail and yes it is really heavy. Thats why the owner wants to change it. I think I will buy it off him so. I have him down to 800euro now.
Thanks again Bass friends :)

800 Euros? That's terrible. You should definitely not buy it, and pass on the sellers details to me straight away, so that I can, erm, teach him the error of his ways.....

OK Finally I have my 76 Jazz. Its a beauty but hasnt been cared for properly. The string tree wes replaced with a washer and a rusty screw but Ive sorted that. The neck relief is all wrong and it needs a good going over. The string nut seems overly high and the fret wire profile is flat. The biggest problem is that the tuners have been replaced with the wrong size(14mm) but I think they should be a bigger diameter, maybe around 18mm ish ? The bushings are still in the headstock and look like the originals.

Q: Can somebody tell me the right tuners for this bass? as Im not sure and dont want to order the wrong size.
Any help greatly appreciated. I'll post pics soon :)

Find a good luthier and have the bass thoroughly serviced, all the issues ironed out, get the action as low as possible and a new set of strings. All of these things will allow you to get the best from the beast...
