Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?

The main deficiency of most Class D amps is that they lack sufficient capacitive storage capacity

I'd add class H with SMPS to the list based on experience and probably every other class with SMPS (no expereince).

as show by the inside of one of those powersofts....

Compare and contrast - Behringer EPQ900 (class H, 900 pretend watts). To be fair to Behringer, this is a perfectly adequate amp if you're looking for around 300 watts:
Sort of. The advent of digital technology means that adding more features usually just means a bit more code rather than more hardware. Besides, chips are cheap and phenomenally reliable these days (otherwise how would a billion-transistor CPU chip ever manage to work?). The real trick is to make all the user interfaces [s]idiot [/s]user proof so the amp can't be damaged when things are connected wrongly. Sure, user-definable light colours are just a gimmick (and other 'features') but so what if it costs nothing extra? Someone might like them and the wider the appeal, the greater the sales volume and the cheaper the manufacturing costs, though whether that trickles down to a lower price is a different matter. Anyway, the market will soon determine what really matters and I doubt many people would refuse to buy an otherwise good amp just because it had programmable lamp colours as well.
Speaking as a software engineer, every line of code is a bug waiting to happen.....

And as such, every line of code and new feature adds cost as it needs to be properly QA'ed and adds to the resource drain of every subsequent build-test-deploy cycle since it must always be tested from the moment its introduced until the death of the product, releases without true regression tests aren't worth sh*t.

So no line of code comes free - ever....

I'm convinced there would be a market for a tiny class D 'power amp' that we would plug our preamp pedal of choice into. Literally an amp to power the sound, not to colour it.... . just a box with a volume knob.

A dude on here did a build diary for one. I'm amazed not more people would want one!
SWR tried that. Demeter do it.
to be fair though the powersoft is probably 10 times the price. :)

. . . except that, using the 'big iron' criterion, you might as well argue that those new-fangled toroidal transformers just don't have the grunt of a real laminated transformer. ;)
Personally I find the more circular nature of the current produced from the toroidal transformer is much better suited to bass than the squarer current that you get from the older laminated transformers....... :)

That KOSMOS thing has been around on Peavey kit for a while now - it's truly horrid. :)
Late into the thread, however

Kosmos thing - an excellent feature. On my Tour 700 It constantly reminds me that designers can get it wrong. Total waste of a knob (ooh err), which should be compressor. It is useable at settings between 0 and 0.5 (max being 11).

if that's what the blue thing is!
That's what the blue thing is. :) The original Bulgin socket was too worn to be of use.
I could have replaced it with another Bulgin, but I'll be gigging this amp so it had to be something reliable.
I nearly got a Speakon fitted as well, but settled for new jack sockets. The old ones were well worn.
and judging by your profile pic you split the input into 3 preamp ins?

What, you mean the powerCON socket? :)
Going off on a bit of a tangent, does anybody know what those 2 connectors/plug thingys are, either side of the plate in the middle, in the rear view pic?

I need one for my old Carlsbro TC60, and haven't a clue what to search for...

The one on the left is a voltage selector plug and the one on the right is an impedance selector plug. ;)

They are the same - a voltage/impedance plug. :)

That told me, dinnit :) It's for an impedance selector...just wondered if they were called anything in particular.
