"Don't think I'd recognise a bass guitar."
Said to me Friday by a beautiful woman I tried (and failed) to chat up.

Someone must have told her you were the bass player. How else could she have failed to succumb to your charms? :)

Harvey Vinson's book 'Rhythm Guitar' (which in all other respects was pretty effective in educating me as an 18-year-old beginner) warned that a hybrid pick-and-fingers technique was a short cut to mediocrity. Someone should have told that to James Burton, Albert Lee, Jerry Donahue etc.

That might have meant, "I would like to learn to recognise a bass guitar, would you please show me the one you keep in your bedroom."

"Don't do A level music as you need to get a proper job and universities won't like A level music"

My Mum, in 1990, which led to me making a huge mistake and giving up music altogether for many years!!

That's sad. My parents are pretty much the only people who would support me in making that choice, although I think that's mostly because they know they can't steer me.
