September Composition Competition!

Got some 'cave time' coming up over the next few weekends, so I'm in!

No ideas what I'm going to put together as yet. Probably some sort of ambient, watery number. We'll see.

Suggest we set up a sticky thread in the Recording section as a 'go to' link for this and future monthly compos (assuming the whole thing takes off...).

I did one! I was thinking ambient and ended up with this recording of 19 basses (18 playing the same note) and voices. The production is a bit 'low-brow' but I was not inclinded to spend too long on it because it is crap! It reminds me a bit of Bo Hannson! The working to an image thing was a new thing for me and an interesting challege. Great fun.

You're full of surprises, Bilbo! This is definitely not something I'd have put in your pigeonhole.

You say the production is 'low brow' but I actually think it fits the mood of the track. I especially like the tone of your bass.

The vocals are suitably eerie and combined with that sustained low note sound like Tuvan throat singing, or something… nice effect.

In all it reminds me of both Vangelis (esp. Blade Runner soundtrack) and John Carpenter - it has a certain soundtrack feel to it. And not the kooky romcom kind ;-)

Like it.

The image didn't say 'bebop head' to me so it forced me to think outside the box. I didn't want to do anything 'pretty' because that was not how I saw the image. I went for a minor feel but every time I tried to add any harmonic movement, I lost the connection between the piece and the image it is supposed to represent.

In my head, the drone creates the tension, the voices are meant to represent the dead corpses in the water and the melody line is simply the thoughts and feelings of whoever is viewing of the scene. Not particularly sophisticated but I didn't have a great deal of time.

Excellent, exactly the point of the excercise :D

Had a quick listen on my phone and it sounded pretty bloody tense, will have a listen through my monitors before the end of the month :D

We had to do this as part of a uni module and I really enjoyed it then, which is why I thought it might go down well here :)

Interesting... that's how I interpreted the picture too. Not quite to the extent of floating dead bodies (!), but melancholic nonetheless [note to self: never go fishing with Bilbo].

Made a start on my entry over the weekend and it's going to be a slow process. Not so much the bass playing - which is likely to be very simple (as I'm quite frankly rubbish), but a lot of messing around with field recordings. I'm trying something very different to my usual noisy stuff, which can only be a good thing I guess.

Yes you can. Try to imagine it from the carps point of view [/quote]

Very good point :D

Nice orchestral piece! Very epic and certainly with a hint of fantasy soundtrack as you mention (I used to play Oblivion :) ).

Impressive that you keyed it in live. It's nicely paced, it's got a great atmosphere and the crescendo at the end is superb.

Good work!

Sounds really good, i think we're going to end up with a wide range of styles, I'd intended mine to be a pretty simple mostly improvised ambient thingy, but i've spent 2 days in ableton programming sampled drums and glitch tracks, so i've no idea what it's going to end up sounding like.

Thanks for the feedback, I don't know about composition as such. It was improvised :-)

Looking forward to hearing your entry nige

Improvised? Even more testament to your ears man!

I doubt I'll be able to get something done this month tbh. I'll see.

Oh I like that, though now I have an urge to put on my big long coat and go walking over the moors while pretending I am looking out for Orcs. My effort has been interrupted by my getting a new toy to play with.
However, be warned it does involve banjos...
