I will try and get a play before I order though. They do seem to be cheaper on German websites even with delivery. Got to be blue or pink then. I think that is a custom colour although its not in any of the colour guides. I'm going to have sell my Fender Deluxe Jazz bass before I can get this though. Plays like an absolutely dream and is just so versatile, I've never had to fight to get a good tone from it in any situation. I've heard people say they are more modern sounding and can't nail 'vintage' tones, but with flats and the neck pickup I get beautiful Motown thump forom it. Rounds and both pickups I can get a great growling Jazz/Stingray hybrid tone for rock stuff. It's my swiss army knife bass! PMT were advertising Basics at about £1095 I think last time I was there in November. Too rich for me I'm afraid, I can only afford second hand.... although it is tempting to sell two of mine to buy one new one built to my spec! BUY IT! I guess I prefer a more modern sound most of the time, but I've always felt that it's easier to get a modern sounding bass to sound more "vintage" (roll off the treble, palm mute, etc,etc) than to make a vintage bass sound modern! I guess you're fairly unlikely to see one exactly like that come up on the used market, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it! [/quote] The JM is a little more versatile and maybe a little more modern sounding. I've rotated the MM pickup so that the single coil mode is in the 70's position. It didn't do a convincing J sound previously. It now does P, 70's J and MM if the EQ is set just right. The JJ does P and 60's J and can cop vintage and modern with the boost/cut EQ circuit. Yes the PM is a Soft Aged one and since that photo, now sports a Wizard P pickup. I've had it for two days now, It feels amazing and through headphones and an amp in bass direct it sounds amazing. I can't wait for band practice next Sunday, I'm gonna be pretty excited! Does anybody know what strings these ship with I'm sure they're sandberg steel strings as they have the silver/grey wrap on the ends. Just wanted to know they gauge, I'm sure they're 40-100 but I wondered if anybody on here knew for sure. Also is there somewhere in the uk that sells these? And what strings do others have on their bergs? Matt P Posted July 10, 2012 Share Posted July 10, 2012 why did you have to post all those pictures? i've got serious Sandberg GAS now! a PM5/VM5 (am i right in thinking they are actually the same bass?) would suit me perfectly, people have mentioned that the necks are lovely and slim, anyone able to give me a comparison with the Ibanez sr 5-string necks? it's a good thing they don't do a sonic blue without the relicing as it would dent my bank balance pretty hard and pretty fast, going to have to wait paiently for one to pop up in the for sale section here in a finish i like. Matt P Posted July 10, 2012 Share Posted July 10, 2012 custom order would be well outside my price bracket, at the moment i could just about scrape enough together to pick up a secondhand one from the for sale section here (and that would involve selling whatever i could spare from my current collection and whatever else i could find in the house that i could live without!) the precision-musicman pickup combination is exactly what i want though, especially with the reversed p-pup, a nice natural basic vm5 would be absolutely perfect, a california vm5 would be beyond perfect (a great match to my natural '77 p-bass) i can sort the gas for a sonic blue bass with a can of nitro and my old squier jazz i'm off to stalk the classifieds.
