Yellowjackets - Jimmy Haslip

One of my satelite German channels has live jazz concerts every week and I came across one band last night that really impressed me.

Yellowjackets featuring a bass player called Jimmy Haslip.

Jimmy is a left handed player who was playing a left handed six string but with the strings strung the opposite way around, thickest one at the bottom - thinnest at the top, this was not a case of playing a right handed bass upside down, it was definitely a left handed bass with the controls on the lower side of the body.

Apparently he plays MTD basses live.

What a player - very fast runs.

Maybe I have had my head in the sand as I have only just come across this guy.

Is he playing MTD basses now? He was a Tobias user back in the late 80's and early 90's and then used Roscoe basses for ages too. Monster player, the first time I heard him was on a Jaco Pastorius tribute album in which he covered Havona, using one his 'upside down' basses. His performance there was nearly as good as Jaco's job the first time round!

It's a same the Yellowjackets weren't 'better'. They have wrote some cracking songs (Claire's Song for example) but often put out albums filled with dross.

This is my favourite Jimmy Haslip moment with The Yellowjackets:

Russell Ferrante initially plays the bass part while the sax player plays the "head" and Jimmy then takes over playing the bass part seamlessly. I love the way this track swings big time! :)

Had the good fortune to see them in 1991 when they played the Royal Festival Hall in London as part of Capital Radio's Jazz Festival (Lee Ritenour was the other act on the bill with Brian Bromberg on bass - he's no slouch on the instrument either).

YOWZER to that groove, it's Ricky Lawson with Jimmy there I believe... taking me back there Garry.
I had a brief chat with Jimmy after a YJ gig once... dude. Will Kennedy on kit on that gig he was jaw droppingly good, and Bob Mintzer chatted to us for ages, and has since played on a mate of mines album (Elliott Henshaw)

Blimey I wasat that gig too. I believe Jimmy played a red Tobias Fretless 5. Lee Ritenour was great as well. I remember it was the first time I came across drummer Gary Novak who was 18 at the time. What a gig, Bromberg played mostly EUB and was awesome throughout. I think Lee was touring in support of the Stolen Moments standards album.

Oh God, he's one of those people who chews his own notes. Yuk.

There certainly are.

He's okay - dextrous and nimble in a conventional way. The overall effect - the music - does not excite me.

Haslip is a bass tart and changes basses every 5 minutes (probably once a decade but time distorts when you get to my age ;). I spoke to Martin at The Gallery once (1990s) and he told me Haslip was looking at his Flamoboyants although I have never seen him with one; just a lot of basses with a similar look.

I went through a phase of loving the Jackets when I was into fusion but I find them a bit lightweight now. Unquestionably great players, though, and Haslips' 'Ninos' from his solo CD ARc is a real favourite (wish I could get a chart for it; I can't figure the harmony out at all).

First came across Jimmy Haslip on late 70's album Brother to Brother by Gino Vannelli. That was very impressive and i still rate that as one of my fav albums of all time.
Have it on Vinyl, tape and CD now.

Have a listen to Gino's new bassist Sandin Wilson. He is very close friends with Jimmy and is also very impressive style.
I'll PM you from home tonight with details and some other tracks which were given to me direct from front of house desk.

I forgot i also have it on itunes.

He's a monster player. He's still with Roscoe basses and has a signature with Bart pick ups.
Looks like his loyalties may have shifted somewhat...
