Tony was running two enormous Trace stacks when he was in reheasal with BC in the late 90's at Stainbridge Farm Studios, a brite box on top of a big 410 on top of a 118 all twice over. Two heads running them (both eq'ed the same. It was a monumental rig, and absolutely gut wrenchingly loud. The most obvious part of his tone that I hear in those clips, other than a bright attack (pick?) is the two anf a half tonnes of deep chorus he's using. Totally in keeping with the era mind!
Yes, Tony often used a pick. He's in my mind every time I play bass with a pick. His use of chorus is sublime too. In later years (around Buffalo Skinners time) he was using a Warwick Thumb which sounded fantastic. He just always such an amazing tone. I have booked two tickets for Big Country at the O2 Academy in Newcastle for next febraury. I am very excited to be seeing them, to be seeing Tony live!

Tiz a tough one for sure. I have different preferences for different styles but I'd have to go with these two. (in order)

Maybe I should use a pick more often :)

Yeah, I like that one!...Is he using an old Fender Bassman?

Not sure. Awhile back on another thread somewhere someone posted some details of the kit he uses.

Another candidate:

Well, I've tried to find something suitable from each end of my musical leanings - here are the best examples:

Incubus - Have You Ever (Live), back during Alex Katunich's days

Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me, Damon Minchella at his best (although it was Yolanda Charles playing on this track on the studio album)

HTH,
Ian

Cant find the original version, just this remix (where someone has decided that the right thing to do is whack a humungous delay on the drums and make it sound generally less good) but the bass tone and at least some of the genius bass playing is still there, massiveoly love this track!

I can't post an ACR link without including this one. With just a hint of chorus, bass is near perfection in a beautifully layered mix.

And whilst we're in the eighties; I can listen to the bass on this again and again, preferably on a good hi-fi.

I cannot tell you how many times I listened to that track as a student in the early 80s - was one of my faves way back then, especially the version they did for a John Peel session. Saw them live but only by the time they'd gone overboard with the African drums and was never the same for me after that. Any I digress, wonderful track and singular bass tone :)
