Spector Basses @ Gak...not impressed...

Afternoon all,
After finally shifting both my Geddy Lee jazz and my Fernandes 5ver, I finally got the cash I needed to splash out on a new Spector Legend Custom 4 (the Slate Grey finish was the one I was going for).

Having contacted the guys @ GAK on this here forum some months ago, I was given the impression that not only were they selling Spectors through the website but also they had physical stock in the shop, which was great as I only live a 25 min drive from Brighton!

So all excited I made a phone call this morning and got through to a very helpful chap called Graham who preceded to tell me that they...have none in stock and won't have for at least a few months so I would be better off contacting Mansons in Exeter!

In his defence he did tell me that for the money I had to spend he suggested this...http://www.gak.co.uk/en/ibanez-btb700dx-bu...wine-flat/31188
...but what got me was that the GAK site is quoting only 5-10 days!

Very peeed off about this as I could possibly be without a bass for a while!

Anyway, rant over, I'm off to email the chaps @ The Bass Merchant!

Cheers

Dan

Cheers, that is a nice one but am really liking the Slate Grey finish if I'm honest.
The stock indications on gak mean nothing. I ordered an "in stock" cymbal off them, turns out it wasn't actually in stock for a month! Certainly not the only story I've heard of that either...
After doing a bit detective work on t'net - you ain't wrong!

I'm guessing The Bass Merchant is closed till next week but first thing tuesday I shall be phoning Darren and hopefully ordering the Custom 4...(or possibly a ReBop...lol!).

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Did have a butchers but don't want a 5 or 6 string, some VERY nice ones up for sale though!

Well one of the reasons I've been after one is that I used to have an SSD NS94 (which I kept for about 8 years - longest I've ever kept a bass) and the Legend seems to be the closest to that one that they make nowadays.

Had an email back from Darren @ The Bass Merchant and he's said that even if they don't have stock that it wouldn't take 'em long to get one in - slightly different to GAK then!

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, GAK! :)
Good move, Darren knows his Spectors and Warwicks very well so good choice!

I've ordered some stuff from GAK and it was horrible. I rang up two days after the items were due to arrive and they'd not even shipped yet, then the guy I was speaking to on the phone said they'd not arrived yet because of bad weather (which was crap, the weather wasn't too bad and they'd not even left the warehouse..).

I tried to order some stuff off them again, but it all went tits up again, they didn't send me part of my order, then they sent me the wrong thing. In the end I just gave up.

I ordered from GAK and the bass arrived in the wrong gig bag as they couldnt find the original one. They were looking for it when they called, and said they would send it out.

This isnt really GAK's fault, but the bass, a Lakland DJ5, was pretty awful. Poor binding, pickup guard badly cut, very heavy....etc.

It went straight back.
I agree it is annoying when live stock updates are incorrect. I had this with Guitar Village and Soundsdirect so certainly not exclusive to GAK. It's also proof that phoning ahead first is essential when buying online.

Pleased you were able to find one :)
I had the same problem with Soundsdirect - they seem to list EVRYTHING! They had a Yamaha cab that I knew had been obsolete for over a year, saved it to bookmarks so that when I had the spare cash I could get it, put the order in and surprise, surprise, email the next day "sorry, this item is currently unavailable from the manufacturer". What annoys me as an ex retailer is that if these people are not going to stock the stuff (other posts on here asking where you can try certain bass gear as opposed to the shop being able to order it in) the distributors may as well start selling direct and we could all save one level of mark-up.

Not so sure Johnston about the legality of it but it certainly goes against all the dealership contracts that retailers have to sign up to IIRC.

Hi all

"Speculative selling" is a real problem on the net and music shops are some of the worst offenders. Since starting Bass Direct I have always tried on only offer for sale what I actually have in stock, although I may list other products for informations sake. With basses I always try to get a picture of the 'actual bass" where ever I can so you can see what it is your buying.

I really don't like selling a bass 'unplayed' and always recommend customers to come into the shop to try basses (and amps etc) as I feel is so important as they all vary slightly and it is a very personal decision.

Always ask to see pictures of any instrument you are considering buying off the web is my advice!

Regards

Mark
