1.
Slightly off topic, but here goes.... I'm always curious the effect these changes have on neck mass and the appearance / movement / disappearance of dead spots (kind of FatFinger in reverse) and the impact on the sound (if any) on an instrument.
Well if I do it and dead-spots appear, I'll let you know.
 2.
There is possibly a cheaper way to do this - s/h G&L tuners £30 ish ebay sometimes. These have aluminium posts and are Schaller BM size. Key question is what size plate do your existing ones have? Are they the larger Fender type or the smaller BM sized ones?
Haven't measured them but look pretty big to me...
Not only that, but there are also offerings from Gotoh and Schaller, as well as HipShot, which are light weight as well. If you go with aluminum, as I did with the HipShots, do make sure it is proper milled aircraft-style aluminum of the proper alloy and thickness so they will be durable.
Hadn't considered Schaller, will check them out...
 3.
YES! On my main 4-string P-style custom bass, I changed out the traditional large "Elephant Ear" tuners with Hipshot Ultralights. The traditional tuners weighed a total of about a half kilo. the Ultralights weigh about a quarter kilo total. That's a quarter kilo weight savings. It may not sound like much, but it completely cured neck dive, and over the course of a three hour gig, it is very noticable on the shoulder. Caveat: the lightweight tuners may have a different post diameter than stock, so different bushings may need to be installed. But it is worth it. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/174777-and-now-for-something-completely-different-in-a-pj
Thanks! Will defo give it a try now.
 4.
Did you weigh the tuner while you had it off the bass? Apparently some P tuners are close to 100g, in which case if you switched to lightweight tuners, which can be 40-50g, then it would have the effect of removing TWO tuners, not just one. On the other hand, on some basses (such as my Thumb), the original tuners already weigh only 57g, so there's little room for improvement. My guess would be that the Squier's tuners wouldn't be all that heavy, but it is worth checking.
It's a JV so they're heavy all right. Thanks for the advice, will give it done thought.
 5.
£35 bridge and body posted?
Done!
 6. Well, there is a slight improvement. Obviously difficult to tell without wearing it for a couple of hours, which is pretty pointless without a string! Still hard to tell if it's £140* of improvement. Would really like to hear from someone who's done it, whether they thought it was worth it. * Price based on Gotoh Res-O-Lite.
 7. Not especially heavy, about 9lbs. It feels neck heavy. The weight save I think would be the equivalent of removing one of the tuners. Might try that and strap it on and see how it feels.
 8. Got a JV Squier P and I'm thinking of bringing it back as my main bass but to do that, I need to reduce the pressure it puts on my left shoulder. Has anyone tried replacing the tuners with lightweight ones on a P bass? Was it worth the £140 odd to do it?
 9. Withdrawn for now. My other jazz pups have sold and have decided to keep these. Will only end up buying some more at some point in the future.
 10.
Hi there, I'll take the pickups please. Paypal ok? Can you confirm that they are the ones currently found on the GFS website http://www.guitarfet...kups_p_318.html Cheers C
No, they're these ones: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251133800231
 11. Hipshot Drop tuner, HE6C-1/2. Fitted and taken off again. Screw head slightly filed to make it completely flush with backing plate: £35 inc postage to Mainland UK
 12. great guy to deal with. those Wilkinson pups are amazing, too.
 13.
Pm'd re neck.
Replied...
 14.
Such a nice bass! It's a shame it wasn't built properly I'm sure someone will be able to get it to the standard it deserves to be! Very nice of you to give it up for a donation to BC, I'm sure it won't be around long!
I know, that's why I've held onto it this long. Been using it as a practice bass, which it's absolutely fine for, so if you've got a set of pickups and a wiring harness, you're set.
 15. The body is swamp-ash, is chambered, has a book-matched top and is french-polished. The neck is pretty decent too. Hand-made in the USA and it originally had Nordstrand P/J pickups. Hold on a minute, this is the recycling section, surely I've made a mistake listing it here? Actually no. I bought this a few years ago unseen from the states and it cost about £350 all-told. That should have a warning sign. It is very lightweight, looks great and plays well but look closely at the body: the strings don't line up with the pick-up pole pieces, which meant the output of the D and G strings was far lower than the others. Rather than go through the hassle of sending it back straight-away like I should have, thought I would have a go at sorting it out. Lengthened the bottom P pickup route and moved it lower which helped but didn't completely sort it out. Problem is, the bridge was mounted in the wrong place so it's never going to be completely right. Just move the bridge? Tried that with a standard Fender bridge but it turns out the pickup routes are slightly wrong too. It's like the bridge and pickups were an afterthought. Can't simply move the current bridge because of the string-though holes in the body would be difficult to fill, being quite large EMGs - with their bar magnets instead of pole-pieces - would probably sort the 'lining-up' and output issues but if you want to use light gauge strings (which I prefer) you're going to have to move the bridge or you can't get the intonation right. So there you are. Got some of my money back by selling the Nordstrands that came with it (which were wired up wrong). Free if you want it on the following conditions:

Will not post. Have spent enough time and effort on this bass to parcel it up. Pick it up from Enfield or from one of my gigs in Essex.
No electronics included.
Donate to Basschat. 16. Tuners and black pickguard gone. Bass is now dismantled and here some more pics. Will take some more over the weekend:
 17. Pics of the back of the pre-wired control plate. Can't really tell what the values are of the pots but the volume ones have 'CF' on them. The capacitor looks like it has '473J' and '100V'.
 18.
what about a px for an emg exb single knob preamp? Tom
"The EXB is an active EQ circuit for bass guitar that simultaneously increases both low and high frequencies while decreasing mid-range". I might be able to live with no mid boost (don't have one now) but not with something that cuts it. Thanks anyway.
 19. Thanks for the reply. Thought it would be something along those lines. Makes sense.
 20. Bought some jazz pickups. Good price and dispatched quickly and communicated well throughout.
 21. Bought these off psychoandy recently but haven't got round to installing them anywhere and have decided to upgrade my Fender Lyte instead. Here's a link to his original thread, if he doesn't mind: http://basschat.co.u...2-jazz-japanese As for trade, would P/X for an EMG P/J set or EMG pre-amp. Solderless preferred.
 22. I've also been a little lax in the past in donating to the site (think I've only done it once and offered something in exchange for a donation) but I'm all for a subscription to list items for sale. In fact, have already done so. I'm curious as to how the pricing structure was arrived at and sorry if this has already been explained but it's a very long thread and it's not something you can easily search for. If someone could point me to where something like that is, I'd appreciate it. The £49.99 free limit is fair enough but the £7 fee for something sold at £50 is 14% of that price, which seems a little high, insofar as that percentage seems prohibitive to those who want to sell mid-prices items. I can certainly understand wanting to keep the pricing simple and to encourage the subscription. Personally, I think a lower one-off fee, a higher free limit or even 2 levels of one-off payments would work better. Don't know how feasible any of that is.
 23. Breaking my jazz bass for parts. Looks good, sounds good and plays well but unfortunately a little neck heavy. Bought the parts from the states (http://www.guitarfetish.com) as a last ditch attempt at making a lightweight jazz and it turned out really well (even had it professionally set up). Tried to mitigate the nose-dive by screwing a lead weight into the control cavity and extending the strap button on the top horn (good trick that, have to remember to do that again in future), which helped a lot but didn't solve it. Went together really well, so nothing is mangled. Guy who set it up moved the bridge back by 1 cm to get the intonation spot on but he tells me he filled the old holes before putting the bridge back on. Not an issue, as will be hidden by any bridge you put on there. Don't think the holes will be compatible with 'standard' Fender bridges as there's 4 instead of 5. EDIT: Neck heel and body neck pocket 62mm. So here's the list with prices including postage to mainland UK. Jazz body (recommend you buy the bridge as well): £[s]40[/s] £30 High-mass bridge: £10 [s]Jazz pickups (Alnico 5, 5mm pole pieces, wires soldered but not cut): £20 £15[/s] Jazz control plate (with pre-wired pots and knobs): £25 [s]Jazz pickguard (black perloid, 10 hole, slightly filed at neck pocket): £6[/s] Jazz pickguard (white perloid, 10 hole, new, unfitted but not pictured): £10 [s]Jazz Neck with string retainer: £30[/s] [s]Fender neck plate, with screws and plastic backing plate: £6.50[/s] [s]Bass tuners, generic x 4 (only 3 fitted on bass): £8[/s] Comes to a total of about £190 but if you want it all (or most of it), I'll send you the whole bass for £160. Obviously, does not reflect the time and money I put into it but that's the way goes. Any questions, just ask. Open to sensible offers and trades: currently after upgrades for my Fender precision lyte: EMG P/J pickups and preamp and maybe a lightweight Ibanez. EDIT: If you buy the whole thing, you get the strings for free! I must be crazy, quick buy it before they take me away!
