7. Graham Gouldman hardly ever gets a mention.
8. Ha! the infamous Battersea Park gig. I saw The Stranglers a few days earlier at Stafford Bingley Hall,we got just one solitary stripper for Nice n Sleazy. I have never seen such a hail of beer, gob and spit that was aimed in her direction, there were greenies hanging off her everywhere, but she still carried on regardless. Probably one of the most disgusting things i have ever seen. Brilliant show though JJ was on fire....not literally!
9. Down In The Tube Station At Midnight It does not get much better than that.........imo!
10.
The Analog Kid has immense power and energy, so does Digital Man. I don't think he's done much of any real note since Hold Your Fire.
Yep i would agree with that.
11. Well fancy that another mega Rush/Geddy anorak here and i was pondering that very question just the other week, and i also thought Alien Shore was his last ripping Bass line along with possibly Leave That Thing Alone. His change in style has definately toned him down a bit and is perhaps not as adventurous as he used to be. Sadly gone are the days when you put one of their new albums on and sit listening to his Bass leading from the front with jaw on the floor. Still buy everthing they do though...Geddy still walks on water!
12.
Off to see yes at Colston Hall, Bristol on Wednesday. I may sound like a bit of an anorak but I will have seen every UK tour since 1968.
I take my anorak off to you sir!...that is quite some feat. Have a great night.
13.
Can you do me a favour and ask Glenn to confirm whether it was the Ric or the P-Bass on Made in Europe? I believe it was actually the P despite the cover photos (and some distinctly Ric like upper-register tones), but I need to know! I've been fretting over this for years. FWIW, 2 of my faves too.
You know that is a question that bugged me for years, now i believe he used the Ric for the UK shows but swopped to the P for the Europeon shows...he says he gave the Ric to his mate Geezer Butler who still owns it! Will gladly ask him as i am hoping he will sign my 1976 Made In Europe LP,his playing on that was a huge influence on me as a 15 year old just starting out as a Bassist. btw Yes and Chris Squire were superb 4th row directly in front of the man himself all i could was his Bass mainly Bliss! All lot of the old songs are a lot slower now,but who cares.
14. Well off to see Yes shortly at Birmingham Symphony Hall and to worship at the alter of Chris Squire and then next Tuesday Glenn Hughes acoustic show at Brum Glee Club where he will personally sign copies of his autobiography! Thats 2 of my all time top 4 Bass heroes i will be seeing in 5 days.......sorry just had to share im just so excited!
15. Good to see a few i was going to say get a mention Never see Graham Gouldman of 10cc get a mention but some of his Basslines are a joy to play. Dave Meros of Spocks Beard.
16. "Stick it Out" the song Geddy played it on is one of those very rare Rush songs that is in Drop D tuning so Ged changed to this suitably retuned Bass for this song..........apparently!
17. Had a few dodgy ones The first and last time i got drunk before going on stage, having triple vision of your Bass neck and trying to guess which was the right one to play whilst swaying about all over the place....never again. Probably the worst one was when our band had just aquired a new drummer and in his youthful enthusiasm persuaded us for his first gig with us to be at his local youth club, now this was in the middle of a very rough council estate. This was the back end of 1980 and we got onstage to be greeted by a hall full of what you would call nowadays Chavs!! as a heavy rock band who liked to dress up a bit the omens were not looking good. We had made it to the 4th song when i turned round to face the drummer and turned back round to see the singer/guitarist disappearing down the hall, whist my back was turned a kid had chucked a rather large cupful of piss at him and he had jumped off stage and gone after him,but i didnt see it,nor did the other guitarist who was shoegazing pretending he wasnt there, nor the drummer who could never see much behind his Neil Peart size drumkit. They got there way and we got off stage pretty quick and packed our gear down even quicker, now for some reason we did not have our van that night and a mate had dropped the gear off for us in his transit van and was going to pick us up when we had finished ,because the set was severly curtailed we now had a long and nerve wracking wait to be picked up,all our gear was squashed up a dark corner at the back of the hall with us lined round it armed with anything we could find, they were still after our blood they wanted a ska band. I dont know how we got out of there in one piece.
18. Slade were the first band that got me into music and Jimmy Lea was my favourite member so naturally i wanted a Bass...got an acoustic guitar for my 13th birthday but soon took the top two strings off for a makeshift Bass. Finally got a Bass for my 16th birthday in 1976,brought off a Bass playing school mate, and just about the same time a couple of other schoolmates were looking for a Bassist to start a band.It was a Sunburst Avon Fender Jazz copy...it was lovely Bass, just cant remember what happened to it.
19. First Bass..............Avon Fender Jazz Copy Go to Bass............78 US Fender Precision Your Bass..............Rickenbacker 4003
20. Geddy Lee JJ Burnell Glenn Hughes Chris Squire Phil Lynott
21. Random fact. I work with a woman who was one of the kids that sang on that. Needless to say the stick she gets when it comes on the radio each Xmas gets her slightly narked!
22. Im personally not a fan of slap Bass at all, reminds me too much of the decade i would rather forget....the 80s. One of my favourite pastimes was and sometimes still is, was to go to a music shop and ask a guy to get a Bass down to demo...then as soon as you saw the slight twitch and extension of the thumb say "please no slapping"....the moment of slight panic in his eyes and the inevitable "eermm"...always brought an inner smile to myself. Which reminds me of the scene in the guitar shop in Waynes World..with the sign saying no Stairway to Heaven. There should also be a sign in the Bass section saying no slapping!
23. Apart from a few obvious ones already mentioned. Four Horsemen - The Stranglers Lets Call It Quits - Slade Thank God Its Not Christmas - Sparks Analog Kid - Rush Burn (Live In Europe) - Deep Purple Waiting For An Alibi - Thin Lizzy Garden Party - Marillion Future Times - Yes
24. Although i dont really have anyone in mind when putting a Basslline together. I would say the 3 who i have borrowed little bits and pieces from the most would be: Glenn Hughes Geddy Lee JJ Burnel
