I know a few people get tooty about the Pre-Custom Shop instruments being better but I can;t see or hear it & Phil himself says he was still making the basses during the Custom Shop period. I think it's all bullhonky, I've played a few & could never tell what was & wasn't CS made. That said, it's a queer do when people are downplaying something because it was made at the CS
The easy way to tell when a Kubicki bass was made is to check the preamp. If it's 18V and has 6 positions (presets) then it's either pre Fender, a crossover model (which bear the CS logo on the back of the headstock but were made by Phil with original parts and processes like the original preamp) or a post Fender. The only corner Fender cut was the preamp, though some people have complained of Fender era necks de-laminating, these reports are apocryphal at best. The preamp change isn't a deal breaker really, unless you're into passive modes. The two important modes, (active and active with boost) are still present. Much has been made of the Fender connection. It is not as major as some make out. It was more of a commercial deal than anything, as prior to Fender you could only buy Kubicki basses direct from Phil. When he joined Fender, it was mainly to use their distribution network, and they got their logos onto the basses and made some coin. Afterall, Phil had worked at Fender R&D prior to making his Kubicki basses. After Phil got the whole of Kubicki back he just changed the preamp back and that was it! Ah, I do love Kubicki basses.

They both look like stunners, John!
Tony was running two enormous Trace stacks when he was in reheasal with BC in the late 90's at Stainbridge Farm Studios, a brite box on top of a big 410 on top of a 118 all twice over. Two heads running them (both eq'ed the same. It was a monumental rig, and absolutely gut wrenchingly loud. The most obvious part of his tone that I hear in those clips, other than a bright attack (pick?) is the two anf a half tonnes of deep chorus he's using. Totally in keeping with the era mind!
Yes, Tony often used a pick. He's in my mind every time I play bass with a pick. His use of chorus is sublime too. In later years (around Buffalo Skinners time) he was using a Warwick Thumb which sounded fantastic. He just always such an amazing tone. I have booked two tickets for Big Country at the O2 Academy in Newcastle for next febraury. I am very excited to be seeing them, to be seeing Tony live!

Complete loss of use of plucking hand - eek!!

I think it would definitely be worth speaking to your doctor about this. I've never had it happen to me before but it does not sound good! -
Status seems to be popping up a lot here! I've had three and it would take a lot for me to let go of my Series II as it really is a special one! Might as well post a picture of that then...

Being asked to turn down by management
Chris2112 replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
I agree with the comments about the majority of bands being too loud, often in attempt to deafen their audience into submission. Nuance gets lost in the loudness, and the playing is often fairly sloppy too. Turn the volume down and you'll regain some dynamic impact, which always appeals to the audience. But you'd better be a good band, because you'll have nothing to hide your mistakes then...! It ties in with the reason why I rarely go clubbing anymore. I'd much rather sit with friends and drink in a decent bar where the conversation can flow than have to shout in each other's ears in a nightclub. -

My Status Stealth 6 string. Probably because it was the best 6 string I've ever played. I'd not use it all that much, but I wouldn't say no to having it back or getting another one!

I'll agree, Ibanez do make the best guitars. Absolutely effortless shred machines.

It's amazing how popular telecasters are with bassists. I've never known a guitarist who was really that arsed about them!

The headstock is ghastly too.

For me, this next track is the holy grail of overdriven bass tone. It's played by the legendary Tony Butler. I love the fact that the bass sounds so powerful and grindy, yet so articulate and even. The bass tone is only complimented by the bright, sharp guitar sounds. The playing is absolutely sublime too. Check out the tone and playing from 01:48 to 02:30. Absolutely incredible. If I ever chase an overdriven tone, I'd be quite happy to end up sounding like Tony! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF5t4FH5B4Y&feature=related This next track also has some amazing bass tone. Check out picky growl at 01:26 and 02:56 for the amazing chorused sound. If you're a fan of tight playing you'll love the lock up between the drums and the bass at 02:56. It's absolutely outrageous. I often play my ACG with a pick going for those big Tony Butler sounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqmXR4St3cc

At the end of the day, you take the money. If your guitarist is too much of a diva to realise he's there to work, not to be the next J. Hendrix then more fool him. But he needs to get the grip with the fact a gig is a team effort, and if he's not going to play ball he's f***ing it up for all of you. -
I am literally jizzing my pants wanting to try one of these. Not.

I always think of Mark King when I start slapping, and when I can play along with one of his songs I think "yeah, I'm doing alright here". Then I put on a Stuart Hamm record and realise my talent is not limitless!

I have to recommend an East preamp. I've had many great preamps in basses in the past (Kubicki, Alembic and Bartolini spring to mind) but the item in my ACG is just incredible. Okay, it's not the most immediate item if you're used to traditional boost/cut tone sculpting, but once you've got to grips with it I could not name a better system. They sound absolutely amazing, and are incrediblyversatile too, whilst never losing their character.

Love the ACG and the Yamaha!

OGWT - Lindisfarne How Good Did That Bass Look Like?

I am still struggling to work out how this came from Newcastle. So much cheer...maybe things were different back in the day? -

The worst experience I've ever had of this was playing a Schecter bass in Sound Control, Newcastle many years ago. The strings were as rough as sandpaper and evidently ancient. The setup was so bad, I couldn't believe it had went on the rack like that. It was more likely to put people off the basses than anything else! And funnily enough, I've never been that wild about Schecter basses ever since!
