At the end of the day, you take the money. If your guitarist is too much of a diva to realise he's there to work, not to be the next J. Hendrix then more fool him. But he needs to get the grip with the fact a gig is a team effort, and if he's not going to play ball he's f***ing it up for all of you.

I always think of Mark King when I start slapping, and when I can play along with one of his songs I think "yeah, I'm doing alright here". Then I put on a Stuart Hamm record and realise my talent is not limitless!

I have to recommend an East preamp. I've had many great preamps in basses in the past (Kubicki, Alembic and Bartolini spring to mind) but the item in my ACG is just incredible. Okay, it's not the most immediate item if you're used to traditional boost/cut tone sculpting, but once you've got to grips with it I could not name a better system. They sound absolutely amazing, and are incrediblyversatile too, whilst never losing their character.

Love the ACG and the Yamaha!

The worst experience I've ever had of this was playing a Schecter bass in Sound Control, Newcastle many years ago. The strings were as rough as sandpaper and evidently ancient. The setup was so bad, I couldn't believe it had went on the rack like that. It was more likely to put people off the basses than anything else! And funnily enough, I've never been that wild about Schecter basses ever since!

Interesting. I remember buying some Spector strings, they came with a handy little cloth to clean them with. I suppose this is the same sort of thing, just with more of them.

For my overall favourite bass tone, you just can't beat Geddy Lee's Wal sound. It's incredible. Hold Your Fire is probably my favourite record of all time, but the bass sound on Power Windows is just a little bit more aggressive and 'in your face'. I've had a fretless VM Jazz bass and two Classic Vibe Jazz basses and they've all been great. Granted, the CV's are the better basses but the VM was pretty good too.

I stumbled across this hideously bad slap video the other day. I usually enjoy excessive, 1980's slap bass sounds but this is just f***ing crap. I am not sure this guy can even hear himself. Actually, his facial expressions after 00:50 seconds suggest he is having some sort of fit, induced by his his own crapness.
