1. Yes, the EMG Select pickups aren't the best but they're by no means the worst. I had a Hohner Jack that sounded pretty good with the bridge soloed. The neck pickup wasn't quite so inspiring!
2. I was never much a fan of a blues so this does nothing for me. When Pino is playing his fretless in a jazz fusion setting, thats a bit more interesting!
3. Nothing silly about a good bass, and these are as good as they get! Proper handmade quality, instead of the usual J and P clones... 4 string singlecuts are also a very good thing!
4. I wish there were more headless Sei basses around, I've always wanted a Sei!
5. Very nice! Always good to see a fellow Mark King fan playing the old basses too!
6.
One of the easiest fix on the Bongo is to adjust the trussrod. Give it a quarter turn and it'll do the trick, you need to have a little bit more relief as in the attached pic
My ACG has the same feature, what a great idea it is too! That said, I've never adjusted the truss rod in it because it's very stable, even when changing strings. But what a marvellous place to have it!
7. A cheaper wood model like a Steinberger Spirit or a Hohner would be your best bet. Most headless basses tend towards high tech materials and modern sounds.
8. Not a bad price, it should be a very good bass if it's as good as the Smiths I have played! The BT is my favourite Smith shape too.
9. The might look a little odd but they sound great! I remember seeing Dave LaRue using one live with Joe Satriani and it sounded fantastic.
10. Very cool and very rare!
11.
blaming this thread for me looking at Status basses again...GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Status basses are a good thing, enjoy the GAS!
12. Funnily enough, my Status bass appears in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQpgeSbP1Vs In the comments below you'll see the bloke who owned it in the late 80's and sold it in 1993 wanting it back!
13.
mmm... when it comes to holes, i get the feeling that flea may have won the war, sorry wayne..
And those blokes probably still can't sit down!
14. I always think of it as a case of listening to Big Country and then listening to a modern rock record. With Big Country, you've got two guitars, vocals, a big sounding drum kit and the loud, busy bass playing and it sounds fantastically well judged. Everything has it's place, everything stands out, everything has punch and a dynamic quality. Now a lot of things just sound mushy and flat. The trend towards big bass sounds, especially in popular music, has been fairly damaging for the home listener too, since these tracks are designed to sound big and fat through a nightclub's PA system but not so great at home.
15. Looks like someone is going to be getting themselves a great bass!
16. I have seen that video of the bloke playing the Ritter before and I thought it was a very sedate and dull performance of Bach, lacking any kind of pasion or fire! This is much better in every respect:
17. Yes, sound is everything to me. Getting a performance right isn't just about hitting the right notes at the right time. Your tone must be right, you must get the sound to the audience in the best possible manner.
18. Yum, that looks classy!
19. Alex does have a nice Kingbass mk2 though: http://www.youtube.com/user/alexcar66#p/a/u/2/KPmZ3EOpyUk# But this video proves that the classics still sound the best... 20. I still want to know why Rob doesn't like "Waltz for Dawn".
21. I'm the stock at the Gallery used to be better than it is now. I also remember when they had a Wal up for £1250! And I thought "thats a bit pricey"!
22.
That'd be Leslie Grantham who accidentally shot a taxi driver dead whilst trying to rob him when he was stationed in Germany. Late 60's/early 70's I think it was.
Well, the court didn't think it was an accident.
23. Jatoba...I've only ever heard of Wishnevsky using that!
24.
They both look kak
I agree.
25. I love Uzeb but I never found Caron's solo stuff very interesting. It wasn't a lack of technical wizardry, more a lack of interesting melodies and atmosphere. This Uzeb song is fantastic although the bass solo goes on a little bit. Just listen to the bass playing before the solo, it is quite incredible fretless work.
