Is Wilton Felder one of the best bassists of the 70s
Mrbigstuff replied to jamersongoated's topic in General Discussion
100% agree. But Jamerson was most prominent or at his peak in the 60s, whereas the this thread is regarding the 70s. As you alluded to, Jamerson’s playing reached a large audience as he was a recording musician for a label (a hired gun). Whereas Jaco was both a songwriter and a significant member in the not so popular jazz fusion genre. -
No im still here! GAS still persists but all the boring stuff is robbing me blind.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2025?
Mrbigstuff replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I thought I might have bought some strings this year but looked at the email receipt and they were from 2023. Time flies! -

I thought about bootsy and Stanley before posting. Both incredible and I have music from both, but neither put the bass front and centre quite as strikingly as Jaco (although bootsy’s image might give a different narrative). While he wasn’t the first virtuoso, Jaco was the Hendrix of the bass world in the mid to late 70s. -

He played on some great records in the 60s/ early 70s, like Chris B I particularly enjoy The Jazz Crusaders music. But Jaco pushed bass playing further than anyone has and that started in the 70s. -
If you’re going to get a 5 you need multiple to match all your 4 string versions. No use owning a 4 string maple fretless if you don’t have a 5 string variant handy for those 5 extra notes. Speaking of extra notes, best add 24 fret variants of everything just to be safe. I think we’re up to 16 basses so far 😁

Sire U5 probably a better fit. Squier Mustang classic vibe is another option. -
First 5 string - Sire Marcus Miller V7 Reissue a good entry point?
Mrbigstuff replied to ColdFusion's topic in Bass Guitars
Squiers and Sires are both inconsistent with weights. If it’s a potential issue, I’d suggest visiting shops with them in store. I believe they have the same scale length and string spacing which are another two key factors in 5 string comfort. -

Sire is a very good starting point. Particularly second hand will retain its value well too should you not get on with it. I preferred the passive version but that’s my preference in all basses. -
Out of interest what’s the measurement difference?

Have you got double vision?

A chambered fender bass before sadowsky or anyone did it 😂 https://bassbros.co.uk/product/1976-fender-precision-bass-4/

I hate it when the ads describe what a jazz bass is. If you’re paying for a vintage one, you know the difference between a jazz and a p bass! Personally I’d only buy if they have photos that prove they’re the original pickups.

Help with identifying this gender jazz bass
Mrbigstuff replied to bigmuff69's topic in General Discussion
Just seen the case and candy second time looking. Case is the same as the 2000 fender Dlx jazz I had, and not sure why anyone would go to the lengths of obtaining the tools, catalogues and tags for a £700 sale. -

From Andy Baxter’s site: Z0 + 5 or 6 digits 2000 - 2001 -
If you know of one of the original CV P basses for sale I’d go for that first. The difference will be in the feel and finish but I’ve not seen any bad feedback on those elements of the CV.
