1.
I have Rockabillys on my main gigging bass and they're not as easy to slap as the name would suggest.... silver or golden slaps (same string, just different colours) much easier to slap. I have Spiro weich E and A with Innovation Super Silver D snd G on another bass and I find this combination to be very slap friendly. Another set worth trying are the Superior Bassworks nylon whacker strings. They're very low tension so not great for pizz, but you can bang triple slaps out like crazy. The set has six strings so you can choose a heavy or light setup. They're pretty cheap too, about 40 qiud a set if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the advice Rev! Which Superior Bassworks set are the nylon whackers? There are several different types on their website
2. Not too keen on dropping the £££ on a set of guts considering I am just starting out playing this style. Plus from what I have read they require rather a lot of upkeep
3. Thanks for the input guys. I think I am definitely looking at a set of Innovations as opposed to another steel set just to save my fingers a bit. From reading the descriptions here, the Silver Slaps are thicker and lower tension than the Rockabilly set, but the Rockabilly set are wrapped so would have the smoother feel that I am I used to at the moment. But as everything else is changing anyway, maybe a different feel wouldn't be too bad. I am leaning towards the Silver Slaps at the moment. A very different world here compared to bass guitar!
4. Hi guys, I've had a read of quite a few topics on strings but still not sure where I should be heading, so thought just asking would be the best bet... I'm just starting out on double bass after several years playing electric and am looking at changing out the steel strings that came on my bass (secondhand) for something a bit more slap friendly as they seem quite high tension and harsh on my fingers. I'm looking to play slap mainly, with a bit of piz. I fancy trying arco at some point but I know that getting strings for all three will be tricky, so I shall focus on the slap and piz for now. I like the quite bright sound that my current strings get piz, but the tension is too high for learning to slap with. No idea what my current strings are... they have light blue silks at the tailpiece with yellow, red, green and black at the peg box. Very smooth feel to them under my left hand which I like. I have been looking at the Innovation strings that seem to get a lot of love around here, but can't decide between the silver/gold slaps or the rockabilly set. Could anybody point me in the right direction? I'm going to measure the speaking length of the string when I get home as my teacher has described by bass as a 'small 3/4 size.' Thanks in advance!

6. Very nice looking bass What does the pickup in series with a 4k7 resistor sound in comparison to the standard series setting?
7. Lack of ticket sales makes it more likely I can get tickets for the Lee Rocker Live Stage show
8. Just noticed that Status and Orange aren't there this year either... That is a bit of a surprise! EDIT: Or Trace Elliot!
9. I'm still looking forward to going this year. I couldn't make it last year due to work commitments, but went in 2013 and 2012 and really enjoyed the shows! I'm thinking that as the 'big names' like Warwick and Yamaha aren't going to be there, perhaps it will let some of the smaller companies really shine through? Great to see Thomas and George Martin representing the upright crowd there as well this year. I really enjoyed talking to a couple of manufacturers and dealers in 2013 and wasn't fussed about playing Warwicks etc. Maybe there will be a chance to actually hear what you are demoing as well! Either way, I am looking forward to being there on the Saturday and seeing Lee Rocker and Mark King on the Live Stage again.
10.
Honest question here mate, and I have no beef with Ashdown, they arent for me, but at the same time, my gear isn't for everyone... I've only seen Nate Mendel using a Verellen Meatsmoke head on an Ampeg cab these days, and very recently, and is quoted as saying - "I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. It’s so nice to be able to plug in your amp and know that it will be loud and clear, and that I don’t have to struggle with an amp that is…struggling"
I think I am right in saying that Nate is still using Ashdown for his work with Foo Fighters but is using the Verellen for his other project 'Lieutenant.' He was using the Meatsmoke with Sunny Day Real Estate through an ABM810 back in 2009 as well.
11. I'm hoping to pick one of these up at the London Bass Guitar Show next month for a project I am working on. Great to see such a positive review.
12. I was very tempted to pick up Merton's CTM 100 when I saw it in the classifieds to get that power tube breakup which I can't get with my CTM 300 without all the windows in the house going the way of the dodo. The CTMs are great amps though. Completely agree that they seem to move a lot of air in a way which most amps just can't. I think that has something to do with putting out quite a lot of lows regardless of how the EQ is set. Such a musical sounding amp!
13. Also, interestingly, Blackstar have launched a very similar product at NAMM. No idea of the pricetag on that...
14. As an Ashdown junkie, I liked the look of this during the run-up to Namm... until I saw the pricetag :-/ Something like a MiBass and a Mi10 cab could give me everything that I want from something like this (small, interface friendly etc.) for a similar sort of price if not less. My $0.02. Sorry Ashdown!!
15. It may be that the Toneman is a reboot of the EB and MAG ranges having had another look on Thomann
16. Check on the Thomman site Merton...it is listed but without many details and no pictures yet. Nothing mentioned by Ashdown yet but I'm sure we will see something soon! Currently listed is a head, a couple of combos and a few cabs including an 810. Might be the new line to fill the gap that used to be filled by the MAG range since that all moved to the Rootmaster range. Just speculation on my part though
17. I used to use the Sub-Octave quite a lot in my last band... found it useful when following guitar riffs higher up the neck to keep some of the beef there. Not a fan of compressors generally but used to use the one on my EB combo when I was first experimenting. Really looking forward to trying an EVO IV ABM... my EVO III 900 is great, but those 2 extra EQ bands and a bit more on tap from the valve drive would be great. Price tag looks a little on the steep side though at £1499 for the 1200... pretty much twice what an EVO III 900 will set you back at the moment
18. The EVO IV range is being announced at NAMM, as is the new Tone Man range which I think is going to be similar to the new-ish Rootmaster products but with possibly more features or a different EQ. Here are the details of the EVO IV 1200 from dv247: http://www.dv247.com/namm/ashdown-abm-1200-evo-iv-bass-guitar-amplifier-head--216442
19. I was just thinking that was more than I paid for my Jazz templates!!
20. That is the route I am taking for all of my other templates. I think Crimson Guitars do a set of Jazz templates as well but I can't vouch for the quality. I have tools from them and they are top notch though!
21. Thanks HowieBass! Any and all measurement are welcome. I am building quite the database of dimensional information on pickups and placement now
22. I originally meant the front edge of the A-E section, but you make an excellent point! The centreline of the two individual pickups would make a much better reference point
