1.
He's an old school dinosaur when it comes to things like sound reinforcement...more backline is good is his mantra. funnily enough - he swapped to a 15w Victory Kraken amp and loves it instead of his 50w rip-yer-head-off-at-10-paces Earl! Part of the problem is a limited number of monitor channels on the analog desk that we use. That said - I'm sure we could run 1 for the twin guitars and another for the drummer/myself who want a more shall we say rounded mix, not a me me me me me mix! Myself and the 2nd lead guitar try to educate. We'd go DI or isolation cab even in a pub if we had our way
I'm sure that something like an XR18 would scare the bejesus out of him. "What is this remote mixing by tablet voodoo?"
2. No experience - 370 for a quad is pretty good... but I'd still take a UE900 over one (under 200 from eGlobal)
3.
I want a pedal!!!! Some must want to make one???
Nup - and they won't track like they need to either. This, Chaka's "We can work it out" and Whitney's "I wanna dance with somebody" synth tones... if only there was a pedal...
4.
Cheers for the link to the other thread EBS freak! I hadn't seen it. Just read a page or two and there is some very good info in there!
No problem - I think if people realised that running IEMs on a modern setup (e.g. digital desk) is really straightforward now, a lot more people would be doing it.
5. Yup - I think that wins the award for the best looking small format amp. That milled aluminium looks gorgeous.
6. Absolutely agreed! I'm the biggest IEM fan - and so keen to hear and understand all the tech at all price points. These Westones have got my attention as they are a bit different to everything else on the market. Having used the filter ear plugs in anger and having tried ambient ported IEMs, I am intrigued to if Westone have actually made some successful inroads in addressing the problems inherently present with that kind of tech.
7. I don't know if anybody else has been following the progress of the Stephen Ambrose's Adel technology but I found this keynote speech pretty interesting and exciting for so many different reasons - not only for the music world but also giving hope to those with hearing loss issues. Thought I would share in case anybody else is interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS_2UchbEPM
8. Ah yes, there's Tim C rarely using his in-ears.
9. 'fraid you're going to need one of these...
10.
Not just the bass but the whole ambient sound replaces the monitor sound once it drops for example below 20 dB. The bass losses are controlled by the 'SLED' or canal. Most designs use a secondary sound canal to the ear from the filter rather than a ported speaker with a filter. This secondary canal is used to reduce the low f loss. The other method is to have more bass in the monitor mix, not great though. The ambient is giving you the sound from the whole venue, not just the stage. Same with the ACS Live system but that uses the microphones for the ambient which is mixed with the monitor through the Live belt pack. That level of control isn't possible with passive filters. If you want to try the Live system contact Andy at ACS UK or Adam ACS USA, they have a universal fit Live system for demo's.
OK - I think I get where you are coming from. I would be interested in how they work for bassists and drummers - the loss of bass frequencies are crucial. For a vocalist that doesn't overly care about bass - then yeah, I could see that working quite well. I've got the ACS Live system - and I think it's very good but let by two factors - the mics don't cut it in environments with very high SPLs. My friend is the lead vocalist in a Deep Purple tribute band and those tiny mics just can't cope with onstage volume... granted, I would say that the backline needs to be turned down- but they are all old school and deaf and it's not really going to happen. Even with the pad engaged on the pad, they just don't cope. Secondly, the headroom in the bass out the ACS isn't great for bass players. In the right environment though, they are superb. I'd imagine the guys in the west end using them will be loving them.
11. Cool - thanks for the detailed descriptions.
12. Can't sniff at Yamaha's build quality. I miss my BBNE2 - I haven't seen another instrument built as well.
13. Does the guitarist play with IEMs? If so, put so much guitar though them so his ears bleed. Funnily enough, having certainly instruments in IEMs are a good way of getting the players under control. Drummers, for example, are less likely to bash seven shades of sh1t out of their kit if it's killing their ears. Its amazing how more disciplined people can become with regard to dynamics in such situations
14.
Yep, i know but inside the same room with the same bass line being played through the backline and PA with the PA volume already fit to drums (everything also on PA) and the backline volume fit to the drum onstage it's a bit of a fair comparison...
But it's not.
15.
I know all that theory and tried different cabs from various brands. I settled with what i have because is the best gear i've found that will reproduce the sound comming out of my bass as faithfull as possible without EQing. The mids aren't bumped in my cab, they're present and i like it. Most bass cabs have a mid-cut voicing because that goes in favour of a big percentage of bassplayers that use a V-shaped EQ, it's not bad, it's well thought, but not for me. Coincidently, in my last gig i had a friend that went with us and helped us with our sound. We were using the house PA (JBL 2x15 tops and 1x18 sub on each side, both active). He had a device with him to read SPL and freq response, at 1m the PA read 80dB and my S12T went up to 100dB, with the same line played, no tricks. Freq curve in my cab wasn't very far from flat also.
Glad that you have found gear that you like. That's half the battle. If you know all the theory, you'll also know why your friend's measurements are also inconclusive.
16.
Just chipping in for a comment about EBS Hi-Fi(ness) that some are regarding here. I had a pair os EBS cabs, the neoline 1x10 and 1x12, i thought they sounded good until i bought a Barefaced Midget T and then i saw just how many mids were sucked by the EBS cabs and the SPL was way lower on EBS. I'm not saying it's not quality gear, it is very good but for Hi-Fi i would go for something with a flatter response like My current BF Super12T or the BB2/BT2 etc.
BF tune their cabs to push the mids... and when you push the mids, your ear tells you that the SPL is greater. EBS hype the top end - but that is easily nullified by turning down the tweeter. I would never endorse the 1x10 and 1x12 Newline cabs... they are fartboxes and not comparable to the rest of the lineup. Their 2x12 is very much a different kettle of fish compared to running 2 1x12s.
17.
The original intention was to biamp our PA cab but we simply got better sound and performance using bridged modules into the cab and the existing BB2 passive crossover. I guess if you've put a lot of work into making a high accuracy 2-way passive speaker with great transient and polar response, very high resistance to thermal effects (the main problem with passive crossovers), protection on the HF driver, etc then the usual benefits of active crossovers and multiple amps are nullified.
Seems fair enough. Can you shed some more light on the thinking behind the 4 presets and how they are utilised?
18. This is what got me grounded to start with. Playing along with Macca. Awesome book (complete transcription of every instrument). I think Love Me Do was the first song I nailed.
19. I'm in the same position - would never go back either. Fortunately I'm in the position where I have have a rack full of wireless gear and the ability to further connect people with a wired connection too. I would be pretty much ramming IEMs down their throat! Being able to hear everything on a gig with no compromise is too much to give up!
20. Bernie Goodfellow - his instruments just feel right to my hands... and of course, nobody else has a preamp that sounds like the one in the GBs. If I ever order another custom bass, it is likely to be a Schack... for similar reasons - nothing sounds like their preamps either.... and again, they are coupled to some beautiful instruments.
21. I'm guessing theres not enough tension in your string if you are using an E string detuned to C. Try a higher tension set of strings - maybe something like DR Low Riders, a 5 string set (45-125), but as you are detuning the whole lot, use the 65, 85, 105 and 125 and not bother with the 45. Should you not be detuning the whole lot (I'm not sure what you are doing tuning wise - are you just dropping the E string or the whole lot?) and just the lowest string, then just replace what you have for a B string and go from there (although you can't get separate DRs off the shelf).
22.
In order to minimise the low f losses we'll work with the customer to design a canal providing a form of 'crossover', this is the what SLED achieves. In use you hear the ambient sound come in as the monitor sound drops.
I've reread this comment and I'm not sure my understanding is correct so hopefully you can clarify... Am I right in thinking that the bass response that is lost from the monitor feed is replaced by what you are hearing from the ambient side...? What happens if you are running a silent stage, say where I have no bass amp - there is no ambient bass to make up for the loss that you would get from the piped in mix....?
23. You can even tolex a dolly if you want it to match... You may want to put a strap around it depending on what terrain you are going over though.
