It's fairly unusual to rely on the monitor to hear your instrument, unless you're only going direct. Did you have backline? If so, just turn it up.

A slightly well known guitarist with whom I worked for a while, was often not tuned to A440, as he didn't use a tuner, or a reference note. At rehearsals, he would suggest that I should tune to him, since it would be quicker to tune four strings than six!

In almost every band I've played with, the members have driven seperatley on most occasions, so drinking simply isn't an option. Also, with the pittance most musicians are paid, I simply don't understand why anyone would choose to spend half of it on booze, before they've even got it home!

If you want to learn the lines exactly, you may find there's more to them than is at first obvious, though this may be more by accident than design. For example in Beautiful day, (one of their new ones!) the return to the A each time is sometimes on the offbeat and sometimes on the beat. It happens fairly randomly and Mr. Clayton was apparently unaware of it, when asked in an interview.

Basschat (amongst other things) has dragged me from the nice comfortable bubble I inhabited for many years, where I thought people (band members/punters) cared about and took notice of my playing and that it actually meant something, to the realisation that none of that is true. So, err, thanks... I think.

In regard to venues that aren't designed for bands; you will encounter such things as; Having to unplug the cigarette machine (do they still exist?), or fruit machine, in order to power the whole band from one socket. Arriving in time to set up, only to find that several people are eating meals in the "stage" area. Access to/from "stage" is via crowded dancefloor. Access to toilets is via "stage". Access to fire exit, which you mustn't block is, via "stage". "Stage" is area in corner, behind pillar and cut off from main bar area. However, apart from the aforementioned diners, you will enjoy the freedom of setting up as you like in your own space (the size of a matchbox), without being hassled by sound engineers and musicians from other bands. There's currently a Tele bass on ebay with the same neck heel date stamp as mine - 23rd May '72. Given mass production methods, is this a particularly unlikely find, or would there have been hundreds produced on that day? It's nice to think it was made from the same hunk of maple as my bass neck, which would give me some confidence - if I could afford it!
