Barefaced Price Increase - Are They Still Worth It?
shug replied to Ultima2876's topic in Amps and Cabs
I suspect Barefaced margins have been steadily decreasing month on month since the last time they set their prices. I can't think of any commodity which hasn't risen in price over the last couple of years and particularly the last few months. Every single increase erodes a companies profits, whether it's timber or diesel or adhesive or teabags, it all comes off the bottom line. With a high-end and somewhat niche product like this it's surely better to preserve quality standards at the expense of pricing than the other way round? I hope Alex and his team can weather this and continue pushing out their unique product. Of course, I might be less sanguine about this had I not got my BT3 in March... -

Yea, that'd work. The only difficulty being fixing it all together. The beauty of the flightcase fittings is the they make the joins easy to execute. And keep the weight down. Spot on about back-of-car visibility, though

They are horrible. The sworn enemy of the neat pack and laden with fingertraps. Much better are these Ultimate Support jobs. Strong (within reason) unobtrusive and fold flat properly

Some good ideas here but I went with this... It's essentially a cross between a flight case and a slip cover. It stops my amp from getting beat up and also elevates it to the optimum working height, doesn't add much to the weight and nothing to onstage footprint. I'm amazed nobody's producing these commercially. I made this myself, as you can probably see, in no more than an afternoon even taking into account my lack of tools and experience. I don't recall the exact costs involved, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't so much - certainly no more than a Hot Covers or similar If I were to make another I'd make it slightly bigger so I could line it 6mm foam or similar, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it. It's stood up to 3 years or so of gigs without needing any attention, it's a strong as you like and does all the things I intended it to.

If it sounds alright at gig volume just put the grill back on and forget about it would be my advice, garnered from a lifetime of skinflintery 😉 Shug

Predates MK's ascendancy by some years. I recall seeing Marianne Faithful at a festival in 1980 and her bass player was using one of these combos. He had absolutely the best sound of the day, IIRC...

Just received a very nice QSC power amp off HAPPY JACK. Better than fair price, as described, beautifully packaged and despatched promptly and without drama. Excellent, stress free transaction. Deal with confidence, folks! Shug xx

I had a Sperrin transistor head - my first amp - that was utterly useless. Think they were made in the NW area. Maybe one o' yous knows about 'em? It had a rocker switch marked 'Click' whose sole function seemed to be to go 'CLICK' when toggled with no discernible effect on the sound. Man, the 70's was not a great time for affordable and effective bass gear...

I did New Day festival in Kent with Atomic Rooster a couple of years back with an Aguilar 412 and a rack with a Crest CA9 and a Demeter pre in it. The rig weighs a fkn ton and is a bit of a beach to move around, especially over any kind of rough ground. It sounds great, of course, but the fact is The Dub Pistols were on the bill and their guy was using a tiny class D amp and a 1x12 - might have been two 1x12's - and his sound was IMMENSE. Of course, it didn't look nearly as intimidating as my rig but, Jesus, it sounded dam' fine and the PA does most of the heavy lifting. I mainly use a Rumble 500 combo with or without an ext cab these days with an honourable mention for an Aguilar Tone Hammer pedal for the DI. Sounds pretty good to me. Naturally, my tech rider for gigs where backline's provided still says 'SVT / Aguilar 750/ Marshall VBA400 + 8x10 or equivalent ' - I'm not mad - but if I got to move it myself or there's limited space onstage it's the Rumble for me. Plus, you look a bit daft dragging the Full Monty fridge and head into a wedding gig or similar. To get back to Oneshot's OP, those Eich 212 combos look like they'd do the job in pretty much any circumstance, though they're expensive and don't come up used very much. Failing that, the Rumble 500 covers it all for me and they're dead light and pretty available and affordable. Nowt sounds like a well-sorted old SVT rig but you gonna find/store/maintain one of those? Good luck in your search. New gear's great, innit?

This item popped up on my Ebay page earlier. Is there anybody in the whole wide world who'd be daft enough to bite on this? This one is in Japan, which seems to be the world centre for optimistic pricing these days, but I was in a guitar shop in Newcastle - good shop, loadsa stock, helpful staff, etc - a couple of months ago and they had a virtually identical CS model in stock @ 5K, which seemed ludicrous at the time. The relicing - and I know opinions vary about it but good quality ageing is for sure time consuming and difficult to pull off - was, well, fosters-poor, the fingerboard being particularly half-arsed, looking as it did like someone had just had random pokes at it with a Dremel. Now I know some of you out there have collections of exotic basses costing many thousands - Wals, Alembics and other rarities, custom builds etc, not to mention actual vintage instruments, but this and other Fender-type instruments are none of those things, being, in effect, machine made production instruments with an element of hand finishing. The woods are pretty standard, though Fender (in this case) might select the nicer pieces for CS use, the hardware is completely standard, albeit aged, the tuners completely normal, the pickups just regular stock items. In fact the one I spotted in Newcastle didn't even have a bakelite scratchplate to lend some vintage cred. The one I tried weighed about 12lbs and had a neck so baseball-batty as to be borderline unplayable. I've played a few mk1 P's over the years and they weren't like that at all so you couldn't really put it down to historical accuracy. I've kind of rambled on a bit here and maybe lost sight of the original point which is, I repeat, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PAY $10000 FOR A REPRO BASS? Anyone? Contrary viewpoints welcome. I've been wrong before. Seasons Greetings Y'all Shug xx Fender Custom Shop -2021 Limited - 1951 Precision Bass _Qyh196 _ eBay.mhtml
