1. Second row, second photo from the left - is that the GB in this month's BGM?
2. Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Still their best album, especially with regards to bass playing.
3. Oh bugger, shoudn't have looked at that, not with my next student loan payment coming through on Monday...
4. The only thing I know about Caparison guitars is that the blokes from KsE use them. That looks very nice though. And yeah, did you buy it?
5. I think Badlands Guitars in Brighton sell them, but I'm not sure if they've got any in at the moment. EDIT: Sorry, just saw it said USA. I think if Badlands do sell G&L it'll just be the Tributes, they seem more geared towards the "budget" end of the market.
6. Arse Bumped into Justin at a Reuben gig last year and he appeared to give the impression that they were still writing together and looking for a new singer. Then again, I was the wrong side of several pints of ridiculously overpriced whatever-they-were-selling so I may have got completely the wrong end of the stick. Shame as they were without doubt one of the best bands I've seen. Nice blokes as well.
7. Sounds like everyone that went had a great time, gutted I couldn't make it (although I've probably saved a fair bit of my hard-earned by not going!). Here's hoping the next one will be just as good - and held in the south
8.
*snip* But unfortunatley Sitkh are no longer together as a band so we can't get giddy over the thought of a new album *snip*
I knew Mikee and Justin left, but I thought the rest of them stayed together...? Perhap the Dood can shed some light.
9.
Somewhat agree to an extent but being an avid dream theater fan i demand you know your songs first particularly their latest album which is less... "showy" if you want. Btw the original song that got me into dream theater was "endless sacrifice". Anyways heres 2 songs that have turned 7 ppls heads UNTIL i told them it was dream theater (their very very multiskilled, ie.. a ragtime is in one solo or other but i forget which song as i havnt watched the dvd in a few days) -Forsaken -Wait for sleep I DARE you not to like them Youd be the first not too out of everyone i knw lol even my MUM likes em!
The thing with Dream Theater is that being "showy" is the only thing they've got going for them. If you take away the "showiness" of Dream Theater you're just left with a third-rate metal band with an appalling singer. Their last album is proof of that - it's painful to listen to.
10.
Saw the Mars Volta live in London the other week. Lordy lordy, Juan Alderete can play!
Agreed, I was there as well, Alderete's a hell of a player. I felt completely knackered by the end though, I didn't think they'd ever stop!
I really, REALLY hate dream theatre. So so boring. This kind of music is basically there because musicians like to show off, and other musicians like to watch musicians show off. If musicians didn't buy music, dream theatre would be flat broke.
Couldn't agree more, I cannot stand Dream Theater's music. Absolutely bores me stupid.
Someone mentioned the Mars Volta, who I have seen with Juan Alderete who was pretty astounding. I thought he had left the band now though?
Nah he's definitely still there, although their old drummer Jon Theodore left to be replaced by Thomas Pridgen, with mixed results IMO. Some rock/metal bands I'm particularly enjoying at the moment: Botch Russian Circles This Will Destroy You Latitudes Devil Sold His Soul Isis All highly recommended to the post-rock fans out there (well, I suppose Botch or Devil Sold His Soul aren't post-rock, but they're flippin' good all the same).
11. Either Vermicide or The Widow by The Mars Volta. Great grooves and lots of room for improvisation.
12.
Thanks Joe, very comprehensive! I'll keep my eyes open, and you never know, we may bump into each other here and there, even if it's only at Sainsburys, Asda or Tesco, whoever's doing the best deals on cat food at the time! (They're treated better than me!)
No worries. And seeing as I can quite often be found stacking shelves in Tesco (when I'm around), I'd say that's actually pretty likely
13. Ah, fair enough. To be honest there isn't really that much around in Crawley - a few pubs like the Tilgate (in Tilgate, funnily enough), the Railway (near the level crossing in town), the Rose and Crown and the Swan (both in West Green, near Asda) have bands on every now and again (covers/tribute bands a lot of the time), and there used to be the odd gig at Brannigans before it sadly departed. They have bands on pretty regularly at the Laserhub down Spindle Way, although I haven't been to a gig there for a while so I don't know how they're run these days (hopefully better than they used to be). If you're willing to travel a bit there's almost always something on in Horsham (though the quality can vary considerably ), and there's a pub in Copsale (near Southwater, about half an hour away) that gets some decent bands on quite a regular basis, but it does suffer from being smack bang in the middle of nowhere. The Horsham and District Live Music Alliance website can be a good place to find out what's going on in the area, as long as you ignore the large amounts of idle banter. ...And after typing out all of that, I'm never going to complain that nothing ever happens round here ever again
14. Hi Stew, good to see another one from Crawley in our ranks (ignore my "Location", I'm Crawley born and bred, sadly). I'm now racking my brains trying to remember if I've met anyone fitting your description while out-and-about - are you in any bands playing locally?

SOLD

Right boys and girls, due to a lack of both space and money I need to get rid of some basses. First up is the Yamaha RBX250F I bought a couple of years ago to try and get into fretless playing. Unfortunately I wasn't very good and never got round to a practicing much, so for most of the two of years I've had it it's been virtually untouched except for five minutes here and there. Looking at it would suggest its previous owner(s) had the same intention as me when the bought it, as it's practically mint except for one or two VERY minor scuffs and some light fretboard wear, none of which affect the playability. It's incredibly easy to play (aside from the fact that it's fretless ), really slim, narrow neck and weighs next to nothing. Pickups-wise there's one P-style pickup in the usual place, one volume control and one tone control. I'm looking for £100 but I'm open to offers; to be completely honest I just need to get rid of it. I'd also be interested in a trade for either an Akai Headrush. I'd prefer collection from Crawley in West Sussex and am willing to drive a reasonable distance from there to meet halfway, but if you wanted it posted I'm sure something could be arranged. Photos will be up tomorrow lunchtime-ish. Thanks for looking, Joe
16. You Can't Quit Me Baby by Queens of the Stone Age.
17. 1. Phil Lynott 2. Bruce Foxton 3. Geddy Lee 4. John Paul Jones 5. Paul Simonon
18. Real name - Joe (bet that surprised you all, eh?) Age - 18 Occupation - Student/Customer Assistant at the UK's favourite supermarket Started off playing bass at Christmas '02 at the tender age of 13, because his dad decided that his new schoolmates needed a bass player. Started playing drums a month later, and guitar a couple of months after that. Continues to play all three with varying degrees of success, but is improving all the time. Possibly. Was the bass player for prog band Acta Non Verba, however, due to personal differences such as the guitarist being an arsehole now appears to be band-less, as far as bass is concerned. Also plays drums for ska/pop/punk/cheese band Used Inc, with whom he may be coming to a pub near you in the summer depending on whether or not the tour is arranged before Reading festival tickets go on sale. Has a very eclectic taste in music. Loves Fall Out Boy and Godspeed You! Black Emperor in equal measure.
19. Yeah, I saw that on their website the other day. I'm in no position to buy but I was planning a trip down there while I'm back home in a couple of weeks anyway, so I'll have to go and see what they've actually got in stock. It'll be interesting to see if Chris is still trying to sell everyone that walks in the door a Fender 50s Precision when there's a couple of BG's or DD's hanging on the wall.
