1. I've just acquired a rather nice Gibson Midtown Bass. The tone is great but the bridge pickup (one of the mini TB humbuckers) seems to be micrphonic. Played with a pick, i get an annoying loud click coming through the amp if the pick comes into contact with pickup cover. Because of where my right hand naturally sits, this happens a lot! I don't really want to swap the pickup, as the tone itself is great. Is there an easy fix for this?
2.
Out of interest, what capacitor did you go with in the wiring kit? I went 0.1uF but not installed the kit yet. Still wondering whether to upgrade the pickups in my Japanese PB57-US at the same time. I've got the KiOgon vintage wiring kit and some labella 760FL strings sorted. Just need to make a decision on whether or not to replace the Japanese made "US vintage" pickups. Been looking at the Fender Pure Vintage 58 P-Bass pickup on Thomann. Darren
According to my PM exchange with Ki0gon the cap is a Vintage Sprague 0.1. Have to say that that doesn't mean a lot to me, save that Ki0gon advised it would give a "vintage old school" tone - which it does! Tough call on the pickups. The SPB1 is great, but I was replacing a generic pickup that had been fitted years ago. The US Vintage pickups fitted to my Japanese 70s P reissue were excellent, and I'm not sure the Seymour Duncans would have been a significant improvement.
3.
The Boss ME 50b for me is the easiest multi effects around. Pretty bombproof and has all switches and knobs to turn instead of annoying and confusing computer menus and switches which you need a computer degree to understand.
+1. I've gigged with the ME50 for lots of years now. Every so often I get GAS and go down the single pedals route, but I've always gone back to the trusty old Boss. Very easy to use live, as you can tweak settings by using good old fashioned knobs rather than having to access a menu. Very usable effects (although the synths are not great) and the convenience of not having to cart half a dozen pedals to each gig.
4. I've just fitted a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 and one of Basschat's very own Ki0gon's vintage wiring kits to my Precision. The combination has exactly nailed the classic Precision tone for me.
5. Bought a Precision wiring kit from John. He very helpfully took me through the options and the delivery time was very quick. Installation was a doddle, even for a complete electronic dunce like me. Fantastic service!
6. Sold Chris my Stingray. Great bloke, and very patient about my late arrival due to road works on the M1!
7. Thanks Tom. The pictures are hosted on Flickr, and I suspect I need to change the privacy settings. Will sort tonight, and happy to PM or email more pics.
8. I've decided to put my rather nice Martin DX1 electro acoustic up for sale. This is Martin's "budget" line, although for Martin that still means that they retail at £539 in most places! Link to the current model at PMT here: http://www.pmtonline...o-acoustic.html The full spec is on the link. The PMT one links to the current model - this one is the older model with the Fishman Classic 4 pre-amp. Personally I think this is nicer than the current model as you have a proper 3 band EQ (see the picture below). The top is solid Sitka Spruce, and has a nice matt finish. The neck is the stratabond type which martin use on their cheaper models - this is a synthetic material but it actually feels really nice, and some claim it is more stable than wood. In any event, it plays fantastically. The tone is classic Martin Dreadnought played acoustically, and the Fishman electronics make it very versatile plugged in. I bought this brand new from Music Inn in Nottingham, and the only alteration is that I've added a strap button (see the last picture). Condition is A1. I'm only selling as I have acquired a rather nice Gibson J45, and this is not getting any use. I'm nervous of couriers at the best of times, but with an acoustic even more so. So I would prefer collection. I'm happy to meet up within an hour or so of Nottingham, and I'm also regularly in Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Leeds through work. 9.
pm sent
And pm'd back
10. Bump! Had a couple of interesting trade offers, but it's still available. I'm happy to consider trades, including trades involving cheaper basses with cash my way.
11. Price drop to £825 I've decided to move on my Ernie Ball Stingray HH. 2007 Stingray HH which is all stock. White with matching headstock and tort pick guard. The colour has actually faded slightly to an almost vintage white / butterscotch colour. In fact, when I bought it, it was advertised as one of the 2005 butterscotch limited editions (which, for the avoidance of doubt, it's not!). It has been gigged and there are one or two dings. One on the body, and a couple of chips on the headstock, which look like they have come from a wall hanger at some point (I've tried to show these in the pics below). Sale includes a Musicman hard case. I'm looking for £825 plus shipping costs. If you would prefer to meet up for collection, I'm happy to deliver within in a reasonable distance of Nottingham. I'm also regularly in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham though work, so happy to arrange to meet up there. I'm not particularly looking for trades, but I'm easily tempted, so feel free to try me! 12.
My 1977 Rickenbacker 3001 bass with original case. It's the heaviest bass I own at around 10lbs so it's not my favourite to gig with but it sounds great in the studio.
Very nice!
13.
I'll knock a half point off for Rickenbacker's quality control as the treble pickup isn't glued into mount correctly; it's been installed off-centre and at a slight angle. Boo. Doesn't seem to affect the tone.
They never are straight. I guess Ric assume you'll leave the pickup cover on and nobody will notice! Not to worry - a black Rickenbacker is the coolest bass you can own, so enjoy!
14. Yep - clearly a Chinese made OLP from the decal on the back of the headstock. Someone has put a pre-Ernie Ball Stingray decal on the front. Decent bass, but is only worth a fraction of the current asking price
15.
To wit, there are fakers out there, but not a lot of convincing ones. All the Chinese fakers look visually different from the real ones, most notably the placement of the bridge pickup in relation to the bridge and the pickguard. The body dimensions are usually altered as well.
Agreed. If, for example, you look at the bass in the Jolana D Bass thread, the pickups, pickup cover, bridge and inlays are not even meant to be direct copies.
16. Here's the definitive article on spotting fake Rics. http://www.joeysbass...m/Fakericks.htm Some really good advice on there. The binding going under the bridge is often the tell tale indicator of a copy.
17.
NOTE FOR MODS. Liam saw my ad for this bass on Gumtree. I advised him to check my feedback on here. He ended up joining
Good to have another Ric fan on board
18. The Italia models are a bit different http://www.gak.co.uk...ic-snbrst/84600 You should be able to pick something up on ebay within your budget
19. Predictable, but Paul Young, Wherever I Lay My Hat has to get a mention. Pino at his best.
20. The Sandberg relicing is about the most convincing out there, IMO. Very nice bass!
21. Have you thought about one of the Delano hybrids in the MM position? I've got on on my Shuker. It's wired so that it is a single coil J in passive mode, but twin coil MM type in active. It works really well with a J neck pickup. The passive Jazz tones are excellent. The active MM tone is a bit different to classic Stingray (to my ears at least). Perhaps a bit more controlled / refined that a classic 'ray, but a very usable and versatile tone. I've got the JMVC 4 FE/M2 in the neck position. They are a bit more "full" sounding than a traditional Jazz, but it's certainly more J than P. Also, it's worth mentioning that the split coil balances very nicely with the MM pickup in terms of volume. They look rather cool too!
22. In 30 or so years of gigging, I can't remember ever breaking a string. I have had a bass fail once or twice, and being a complete dunce with electrics I usually take a backup to gigs for that reason*. I'm much more concerned about amp failures - and for that reason I'm another who always has a BDI21 in the gig bag. *Actually, I managed to turn up at a gig last year without having packed any bass - but that's another story...
