2.
Hello! My wife and I were living there last year - good place.
in the 13th? Which street? We were on Rue de Tolbiac pretty close to Chinatown. Did you have a good time?
3. Will have a listen later
4.
Hey guys this is quite simple & straight-forward really, ever get the feeling you're a terrible musician haha? For the 4 years i have been playing bass, i do get the feeling I am just not as good as i should be. Despite the practicing of new techniques etc, I have little confidence in myself when it comes how good i believe myself to be, whether its a lack of versatility or crispness. I was just wondering, does anybody else get this same feeling? It can be rather demoralising!! Cheers
You can't be a bad bassist because you recognise your weaknesses. To me that makes you someone who knows they need to practice certain things. A bad bassist is one who thinks they know it all In some ways the more that you know the more you realise you need to know or want to know. Its a catch 22. If however you treat playing bass as a long-term thing then you have time on your side. Try to get a focus to your learning and enjoy.
5. Yeah great stuff. Very emotive

7.
& Lâkland is actually pronounced "Lacky Land".
Maybe round your house it is
8.
Hey I can't make the gig at Ronnie Scotts tomorrow. (Early show 6 a clock door opens). The ticket cost me loads but happy to pass it on to a basschatter for free. They don't have 'real' tickets so I can just send the booking info. It's a single ticket for the middle priced seats (bench arrangment at side) although I can't guarentee exactly where as they don't let you know until you get there. PM thursday evening only...will be out of communication tomorrow. Cheers Drew
Only on Basschat. What a gentleman. Credit to you Drew i hope someone got the tickets.
9. If they wanted us to say Lakeland then they should have spelt it Lakeland. Mine was always a Lakland - as in Lackland. What a cheek!
10. I'd say it depends on the attitude of the person who is hiring and whether it affects the playing of the person who is doing the drinking. Its gotta make it harder to travel gig to gig if you have a booze habit so for that reason it'd be a stupid idea. If, however, someone can do it and it doesn't have a negative impact then why not? I'll have a shandy (waits for all the jokes) and make it last all night because, apart from Armagnac, i just can't drink.
11. Oooh scary stuff. Glad that you all made it. It must have been a really uncomfortable gig Should you name the venue? I really don't know if its a good idea from a legal perspective. I can't even come close to that experience - stabbing in the eye! Once had a huge guy with a tattoo on his forehead walk right up to the stage and stare at me for about a minute. He was only 12 inches from me staring down and i was thinking "sh*t, sh*t, sh*t etc". "Great sound" he said and walked off
12. Good question. I have found that its the subtle things that leave me with that magical musical feeling these days. When i was a kid it was fast playing, showy things. Spandex and being able to play something that other people said was cool. Nowadays it can be simple things, subtle changes in a turnaround or bass parts that reference other songs or parts of songs. A note that fits well but is in an unexpected place. Space - leaving space and it making a difference in a positive way. Supporting the song and putting it first. These are the things that i get a buzz from. Oh and gigging in a good band with a dance floor thats packed.
13. I'm off to the show in Camden! Half the price of Ronnies.
14.
We should remember that this thread is in an area of the site viewable to the public. It would be legally unwise to suggest any underhand or fraudulent behaviour by the proprietor of IBass before the facts have fully been ascertained. Unless, of course, anyone really wants to be on the end of an action for libel / defamation. Perhaps it might be best if this thread were locked by the admins until such time as the affiliate partner has clarified their position.
Seconded if thats how these things work. Wise words.
15. It must be really tough to get up on stage if you suffer from a lot of anxiety. Like others have said more eloquently, get yourself a routine, know what you are doing, try and avoid all the band politics and embrace the situation. I have a few aches and pains from a mis-spent youth and the only time they seem to go away completely is when i am on stage playing bass. Its a unique space. Where else can you get paid to stare at loads of lovely young specimens... oh and play some music?
16.
I get quite frustrated with this. I can play and sing fine as long as the rhythm of the bass part and vocal part don't contradict each other too much (hope this makes sense!). Can't describe it very well, bit if the bassline has quite an offbeat feel, but the vocal line doesn't, I'm screwed. If I can plod along on eigth notes I'm fine!
+ 1 you described it perfectly
17.
Guess I'm going to be the odd one out here. Is it possible the guy involved was just having a particularly bad day ? overtired perhaps ? is it very likely that a studio is going to hire someone with generally poor public relation skills ? I do wonder if it was a case of exceptional circumstances here. It may be worth going back and trying to get to know the individual concerned a little better. It may be worth it in the long run, as after all, a good reputation at the studio can go a long way. Just my 2p
Having run a rehearsal studio i can see where he is coming from although a bit more diplomacy would have been nicer.
18.
I see nobody has clicked the used to be a professional box, pity you cant click on more than one, think you’ll find there might be a few who have now got ‘real jobs’ or just got too old, but still play cos they enjoy it,
The "pro" distinction is a bit muddy. I tend to think a "pro" is someone who earns their dosh purely from music, be it lessons, gigs and session work. Age vs practise? Don't get that. Yes, there is a lot more material around to learn from but it isn't only for young'ens. Practicing bass has never been more fun and thats after 28 yeaars of playing. I've probably learnt more in the last few years than over the whole previous 25.
19. salut mom ami. I lived in Paris entre 2000 et 2003 dans le treisieme et jouer dans un groupe de funk avec 7 frenchies! C'etait excellent! Bienvenue a Basschat.
20. Not wanting to string anyone along and drive you all nuts i thought this thread needed a bit more precision. My friend little Mark marshalled a few lines of text to help but made a mistake on line 6. I sent him to the DR who was wearing chords. The DR was unsympathetic and was tapping his fingers. I had enough and slapped the DR who had to pick himself up from the floor.
21. After loading my car at a recent gig i rolled a cigarette whilst sitting in the drivers seat to have a smoke on the way home. There was a tap at the window and a young scantily clad blonde girl opened the door and jumped in. She smiled at me, got out a wad of cash and asked "Do you have the gear?". It transpires that a local cocaine dealer has the same car as me. She obviously hadn't met him before and was still convinced i was him. This was until he pulls up behind me and parks. She reaslises her mistake, kisses me on the cheek, says sorry and hops out of my car into that of the dealer. On the drive home after that i thought of loads of witty remarks that i could have made.
22. I have ditched a lot of insurance recently. Under severe questioning most of these companies will admit that you ain't covered for the stuff that you need to be covered for. I accept that my guitars aren't covered outside of the house and act accordingly.
23. Don't give up unless you don't get anything from it. Most of us can probably relate to your experiences. Sometimes living in a small/rural town can restrict your opportunities.
24. Covers, functions, posh nightclubs and weddings we wear dark suits and the girl singer wears something slinky. Pubs, festies and other less formal gigs are more casual.
25. DR Hi Beams 45 - 105 on fretted basses. These have a long life. Got some flatwounds on the fretless. Do you guys like new strings? I hate 'em. All that brightness is so un-bass. Usually takes a couple of weeks before they are worn it to anywhere near acceptable. I like the DRs cos they maintain a consistency of tone over time. Longer than other brands that i have tried.
