Haha, it wasn't that derogatory, chief - no more so than the seeming consensus in some circles that, when playing someone else's music and charging for it, that you must be somehow more professional or serious I would think that, as you note, the common rule of thumb should be to be find someone who is willing to make the effort, and is able to boot - and applies to all circumstances, where you have even the vaguest of ambitions. I just think we've had some examples, in this thread, of people overengineering the process.
Yeah, its pretty useful to establish the kind of commitment that the band want and be honest about what you are able to give. I don't think its genre specific - original or covers is irrelevant. It shouldn't detract from the fun side of things.

I love it. Something very sexy about the whole thing. I'd certainly trade "licks".
That's where I was going when I upset the cover band gang. As noted by a poster above, there's more at stake when you're getting paid £200.
I shall ignore the derogatory snipe at my earlier post When charging good money for a band its important that you are working with people who you can count on. Organisation and reliability are as important as musical ability. An audition is the opportunity for the new guy to show that they are up to the job. I would say the same for a band who are charging £200. So, when you get someone who appears not to want to make the effort then you move on to the next applicant.
What I'm drawing for this entire thread, is that there's a lot more crap - for want of a better term - associated with joining a covers band, than there has ever been, from my experience, in joining an originals band.
I don't get that at all. You have to take each experience on its own merit - its not exclusive. That said there is probably more at stake with the covers band as they will likely be doing paid gigs
-
Its a first impression thing too though and being able to see things from other perspectives. If they have 4 other bass players who will happily play the tunes then they are now automatically ahead in the queue of someone who is trying (from their perspective) to control the terms of the audition. edit: sausage fingers

There could be a multitude of valid reasons why they want you to play their selection of songs. If you can't be arsed to learn them they will quickly realise that you aren't the right person for them.

I remember seeing a video of him with Johnny Guitar Watson who FZ cited as one of his influences. It always struck me that they were very different - Johnny loved the "high" life and didn't have the technical competence of Zappa but they were both fantastic showmen who knew the business.

The best construction of a Jazz bass that I have seen is on a Hamer Cruise Bass. In fact most of the best built Fender type basses i have tried have all been non-Fender All that said, my band mates are most happy when i take my US Jazz Bass even though its probably one of the worst built basses i have. Its a perception thing as much as anything.
Was a genuis....
He was certainly pretty amazing live as were his band.

Interesting stuff. I own US Fenders and Squiers from different eras. Have also built a BITSA precision. I gotta say that having pulled a few of these guitars apart it is really difficult to see the difference in terms of build quality. I don't think US Fenders justify the premium in price - so why do people buy them? They keep their value and will always be in demand. They also sound so damn good and sit in the mix so well.
LOL. You have made the schoolboy error. Just because they didn't repy to your emails and looked at you nodding with open mouths while you explained it does not mean they agreed with you.
That'll learn me
Well some people want different things out of their bands innit.
Thats about the size of it. Factor in that what we want as people/musos changes over time too. Compromise.
So, the question is, would you want to be as good as you could be with a reasonable amount of work, or would you say you are good enough for the local standard and that will do...??
I want us to be as good as we can and luckily am in a situation where most of the others feel/act the same.

We wasted a lot of money in a studio last year. Result was rubbish. Partly our fault - partly the studio. C'est la vie lets not make the same mistake next time. So, a year later we need a little demo for our cover band website. Eager not to spend a fortune as we did last time which was mainly for the guitarist and singer to perfect their parts i arranged a live recording session. 4 hours, 4 tunes, bang wallop should be finished. I explained all of this in advance to the band and said do not worry if the whole song doesn't sound perfect because we only need to provide about 45 seconds for each song. The idea is to make one track with the best 45 seconds of each recording and put them together as a single track. Singer wanted to go back and perfect some harmonies (even though they don't exist from her live) - guitarist intimated that he'd like to go back and redo some solos. I said, "Don't worry, i used the best bits from each song and none of your solos are in them!" FFS punters who might book us just want to hear the damn tune - not solos. Now the band want to put up each track in its entirety even though we had agreed all the previous stuff!!!

Samey but better than Status Quo samey. I wonder what they would be like live? -
If you have to use 16 pedals you must at least get to grips with them - or buy a synth
Im going to be really brutal about this. I really am not a huge fan of effects, I personally don't see much gain for any one but the person using them. I have a few myself but rarely do they leave the shelf at home. And I'll explain my harshness; It always amazes pubs when my function band plays them as we take about 10 bars to sound check And breath! Dan
10 bars to soundcheck! What luxury I am also not a big fan of peddles but i understand why they can be useful. 16 pedals though? I sympathise with SOLO and couldn't think of anything more tedious than watching someone fiddling with their stuff for 2 hours. FFS thats longer than most gigs we do and you haven't even played a tune. This guy (pedal freak) is compensating for something. Couldn't he collect stamps or train numbers like other geeks?
-
Burn him and/or his pedals - whatever catches light first.
-
Hmm - i don't think i can make it.
I know I should keep it but it's just not being used enough,I play in a function band and like to play the same bass all night and fretless doesn't work on majority of the tunes!A straight swap for a fretted 4 string would be ideal but you don't see them around very often, plus I've got a couple of nice jazzes and I'd like a nice P to go with them! BottomE whats the specs of the Bitsa bass?
Hi Its all US parts except the body which is from a Squire Affinity. I bought a US 2009 neck from a fellow BC'r which is as good as new - cost £180 I bought some standard US Precision PuPs - cost £70 I bought some Fender closed back tuners from the States where it is cheaper - cost £60 The bass looks and sounds great and is certainly gig ready. The pickguard might not be everyones taste but the vinyl will come off - i get loads of compliments when i use the bass. In fact, i was so pleased with the project that i bought a couple of 1980s Squiers that are ready to be pimped . I also have a vintage wiring kit, worth about £15, which i want to use on my new project but would chuck in if its of interest. Finally, the bass will has a high quality TKL soft case and blue suede strap. Here are some pics: http://s1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/bottome/Bass%20Collection%20plus%20home%20built%20Precision/ and a little taster... All the best Jerry

Valuation advice please - time warp '98 USA Standard Precision Bass
BottomE replied to Paul S's topic in Bass Guitars
The condition does look good - i don't know if thats a plus point anymore with all the relic stuff that goes on. It has a hard case. I'd say he could be looking at about £650-£700 in todays market.
