WTF is Twyford?
So. How did the conversation work out. If it's anything like the conversation I had, everyone will agree then you'll get an email the next day where someone has had a rethink and you have to explain everything to them all over again.
It worked out really well mostly because there was a stroke of luck. Singer has bought monitors. Guitarist has bought a PA amp and mixer - modular one that can be upsized as and when required. Turns out that the place that i work was getting rid of 4 x 500 Watt PA speakers! They are in pretty good nick a couple need tweeters but they are modern and will provide a lot more output and headroom that we have currently. I have decided to own the speakers and let the band use them. I was preparing for a bit of a fight on this one but life decided to make this a pretty painless process. I learnt a lot though through this thread and one decision i made was to keep the PA cabs (not sell them to the band) as i now realise what great currency they are. The band and the duo can use them for nothing - we all own parts of the new PA and share an interest in keeping it all in shape. Can't think how it could have worked any better.

I declare most of my band earnings and then offset all costs against this. Food, clothing, phone bills, transport, expenses like strings, setups and of course equipment and finally mileage. I declare it using self-assessment forms. It's pretty easy - i have peace of mind - GAS actually reduces my tax bill! If i am earning i have no problem paying tax.

I was chatting to my dad who had one of these way back in the 60s. He said it was the dullest thing he'd ever laid his hands on. He went and got his P - bass back after a week or so.
-
He's got a point but at least it makes the others look more lively.

Done and good luck to you matey (i said "no" to the last question )

Stunning 2-tone stack knob.......

If only i had the money -
I use a USB interface > laptop running Cubase through headphones at home. Amps and cabs never come out at home.

Its criminal. There should be bass GAS police to keep us in check. After promising not to acquire any more basses my wife had one fall on her from inside a storage cupboard that she never normally goes near. I thought it would be safe in there. A good tactic is to get some empty cases and then it becomes difficult for anyone to really know how many bits of kit you have.
Funny, where did it go then, and where id all this money in my wallet come from?
Some old lady at the cash point?

There are so many possible solutions that its a bit overwhelming I'd probably look at things in this order... Amp - it might be a problem that you could fix with the EQ section on your amp. Have a good fiddle with it. If you have a half-decent amp the EQ section will be quite powerful and minor adjustments should make a major difference. Strings - try a heavier gauge Bass setup - does the bass feel good to play? Have you had the bass professionally setup? If not this might be a cheap way to get what you want. Preamp/EQ Pedal - these are a solution that will give you options. Sansamp and Sadowsky do great outboard preamps that will make any bass sound good Pickups - you could go for a new set of pickups thought the choice is staggering and unless you know what you are looking for exactly you could be dissapointed Basses - you could go for a Fender P Bass or as someone else said the Yamaha BB1100 type with a P/J setup. Thats the expensive option. A Jazz Bass should do a pretty good rock tone and hopefully you can get it sorted.
I get the impression people are missing this bit. Does this seem fair? Sounds like a cheap PA for the guitarist to me.
Threads got long so i get why its been missed but you are right. This is a key part of what pissed me off about the whole thing and made me start this thread.

Didn't sell. Quelle surprise

Covers bands "openers" what do you start with?
BottomE replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
Depends on the gig - Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield or I Wish - Stevie Wonder if its a gig where we want to make a big start. Cissy Strut - The Meters or Rock Steady - Aretha Franklin for a more considered introduction. -
You're probably best out of it as it obviously still has the capacity to effect you emotionally. Go to a jam night or get some practice tools.
Being still wrapped is a fairly significant property of the item, a pictoral depiction of the fact it is unplayed and effectively as new. And if someone doesn't trust the description says what it is, why would they bid at all, and why would I want to deal with them. I can basically make a little more than that from the bass should Is trip it for parts, this is just a chance it gets to not be dismembered, up until some parts of it become otherwise useful.
Like i said, good luck with the sale - i'll keep an eye on it.

Seems to be 2 schools of thought here.

Those that use the PA should pay for it
Everyone should pay for it
I think after looking at all the posts... The singer is cool to get her own monitors - agreed. Why she doesn't have any in the first place is up for debate but hey ho its a decent offer. The guitarist is being a twat for expecting to own something (and use in an unrelated project) that we are all expected to pay for. He can Foxtrot Oscar on that. If we get a more powerful rig that all can use i'd be happy to pay my share. If they opt for a shinier newer version of what we already have then they can pay for it. I thank you
So how can you not know what it is then?
What about all the people who don't know what it is? I am just pointing out that it is a ridiculous photo. What is the point of posting a photo of shrinkwrap? You could have lifted a photo from the interweb of a proper Sue Ryder bass. Anyway, good luck with the sale.
Doing sound I have gone from mixed set-ups, through putting everything through the PA/monitors with absolutely minimal backline, through to a much more old-school set up with PA devoted largely to vocals/keys, and perhaps reinforcing drums where necessary. Which is best depends totally on the application and the musicians involved, so I respectfully disagree with Monckyman that it'd necessarily sound 'mediocre'. It can, but if people have decent amps/cabs and know how to control their volume/dispersion there are a lot of clarity benefits to restricting what goes into the PA, especially with cheaper/mid-priced speakers (eg typical Mackies, JBLs). I think the people who're arguing that a PA makes the band sound better even if just for vox are ignoring the point that a good bass amp/cab also makes the band sound better, and also costs a lot of money. If you want to put that money into a small/cheap combo for stage monitoring and the rest to PA, that's a different solution - maybe a better one but that depends on how much you as an individual prioritise that band over anything else musical you may be doing.
^ this is it really. Its a vocal PA. My bass rig cost about £1500. How much does a 300 Watt Vocal PA cost? Probably not that much.
Not familiar with Ryder basses then? Plenty of info on them right here.
Yes, very familiar. I remember all the threads about the £59 deal they were doing at the time.

You are essentially bidding on a photo of something mysteriously shrinkwrapped. It could be almost anything. Mad. Will anyone bid?
-
Money, itself is not the issue. We can afford to buy a new PA without having to get any loans or anything. Its really how to divide the payment and ownership. When the conversation about this all began I suggested getting more power to put the whole band through - not for volume but for quality - this was not considered but if it was then i think i would feel differently. I rationalised that the guys in the duo don't want a bigger PA to hump around for the duo gigs. So, with that as the backdrop, i am just wondering why i am paying for a PA that i will never ever use and in many cases will be used outside of the band. As i see it the overall sound won't improve that much and we are no better off than we are already. Currently if we do a gig that needs a full PA we hire it and charge the client. I think when we meet later to discuss this i will opt to keep things as they are. No upgrade and to keep charging the client for larger PAs if needed.
Thats just twisting what i said. I was just trying to point out that the band needs the PA, its not just the singers domain. I assume you play music through it? What happens when you play a venue that needs the kick drum or back line mic'ed up? Ive also seen plenty of bands without a drummer and/or guitarist but never one without a PA unless they also dont have vocals.
Dave i don't think you have read the whole thread. There is no intention of using the PA for anything but Vox and some Keys. It will never see Bass and Drums so no, i will never be mic'd up through the thing.
