1. Then there is the issue of getting across different types of terrain! Grass, pebbles, steps, decking and uneven slabs. I've even done sand and water! We have 3 trolleys in the band. Two are foldy-up ones from B&Q which cost £20 and are good for amps, pa cabs etc. The other is a flat 4 wheel thing that is good for bins and instruments etc.
2.
I've never really liked LZ that much, just never clicked with me. However, I do love a bit of the Sabs. Brilliant albums, I even love 'Technical Ecstasy'! 'Never Say Die' is a brilliant album, I've just always loved it although it gets a really bad press. Geezer can't apparently remember using a Ric on parts (if not all) of the album. He said a few years back that he'd only used one for a single gig (the 'NSD' gig on video), and that he'd always recorded with Precisions in those days. That's another thread! Intro to 'Junior's Eyes'? No question!
Now you mention it that is a good album (eats humble pie). Mainly cos it doesn't sound like the other stuff
3.
... and you have kids you still call third formers? Yikes! Looks like it's 100 lines for me then!
I must subconsciously change my language for Basschatters. I really meant "Young Adults studying Key Stage 3". These days you might be more likely to be snorting than writing 100 lines...
4.
I'm guessing it's been a while since you were in a school....
Ha - i work in one!
5. Another "please not a Warwick". Honky, farty things that look like a 3rd formers bass project.
6. If i went the rest of my life without being exposed to their musical endeavours i would also not shed a tear. Great when i was 14 but things have moved on...
7. Terrible wedding gig on Friday night but great cocktail bar gig last night. Friday we played in a really sterile function room that had a low ceiling, hollow wooden stage with pillars in front of where the backline would normally go. Sound was awful. Saturday night was hen parties, ridculous cocktails and exceedingly short skirts - and that was just the band.
8. I have just got in from a gig where there was a limiter in use. I spoke to the manager about it and they had it installed because of complaints from neighbours. Environmental Health said that it was the only way that they were allowed to have bands. The thing was in and out of the red all night but apparently it only trips if it remains in the red for over 5 seconds. I wish it had tripped as the sound was absolutely terrible and was impossible to get in the pocket
9.
I can pass your details on if you like, just PM me.
If you don't get any local quotes then i'd be happy to. I am a bit surprised that so many of us find the limiter thing an issue. Just turn down, thats what the big button on the amp is for. I totally understand that there is a minimum volume - usually dictated by the drummer/kit etc but apart from that its easy.
10.
Not a single PM! Looks like noise limiters at wedding function gigs are a big turn off for bands! I've replied to the guy and given him a couple of local recommendations instead. Consider that part of the thread closed!
If they can move the gig down south or alernatively pay for 5 to get to Yorkshire we'd do it. We have the PLI, we are all PAT tested and really don't mind the limiter if it is set correctly.
11. Nope. My rig is great but GAS is greater
12. If punters have to pay to watch this then I feel sorry for the poor sods. On the other hand they are probably getting what they deserve. Another win for style over substance.
13.
That's interesting. I play that song in concert pitch no matter if I am using a 4 or 5 string. Sounds ok to me. Do you play the low Eb on that song?
We do it in E at the singers request! Makes life easy but songs that we do in Eb, I Wish, for example were played on a 4 string originally so theres no need to go looking for a way of achieving the low Eb. Many of the songs that we attempt that have lower than "E" were originally done on a synth. "Around the world", Lisa Stansfield for example. In these cases i look for a good live version done with a "proper" bass player and use that as my starting point.
14.
For Eb those guys would have just played up the neck!
Works for me too. Never ever had someone say "ooh that song was crap cos the Eb was too high" And its less to carry/worry about. When i see the guitaritst fiddling with his pedal board i quietly chuckle to myself knowing that he will be doing a balancing act all night trying to press the right pedal at the right time, stressing over miniscule changes in wah or chorus etc.
15. We don't mix the genres and stick pretty much to your normal funk/soul/disco tunes. Thing is if you are doing a genre as wide as this you can play a lot of tunes.
16. Plug it in. Does it sound good? If it does then £180's not a lot of money for a bass.
17. I love playing quietly so i secretly enjoy these devices unless they are set at a ridiculously low level. The guitarist has kittens when he sees them.
18.
Sorry but I disagree with this. It is very rare for a band to not be paid at all and is totally unacceptable.
You can disagree but i think you'll find that this kind of thing has been happening for years and will continue to happen. Ironically the very next post to yours is from another chap who suffered from the same fate. I agree its unacceptable but over time you learn to avoid these gigs/landlords.
19.
Maybe a thread where we can individually rate venues. Like a "tripadvisor" type thing but for musicians by musicians. Every time you play a venue you can rate it for helpfulness, attitude, payment, crowd etc etc and at the end it gets a score. Venues like this would soon find themselves bottom of the pile and as it's based on actual experiences of various players its hardly libelous.
Trouble with this is imagine it in reverse. Bandadvisor.com - a site for landlords to slate i mean rate bands. Imagine the landlord of this place and what he might say. Gigs like this are all part of the experience unfortunately and hopefully its a lesson learned. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how sh*t a venue is because you will always find a band willing to play there.
20.
Hi guys, I was put on to Basschat by Graham at GAK. I'd previously never heard of the place, but I certainly wish I had come across it sooner! It would have made my life a whole lot easier when I've been trying to source bits of gear! I've been playing for 13 years now. Played all kinds of styles and genres, but can never tear myself away from the fact that Rush is still the greatest band in history! The early years of my playing came from learning to play (Badly) every Rush song I could get my hands on. I've been through the many stages of Geddy by owning Jazz basses, two Wals (One of which I massively regret selling) as well as a 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 (Currently for sale in the market section). My current longest standing bass is my trusty Billy Sheehan signature model which I've had for nearly six years. It's been used on a million and one gigs and has never let me down. Beyond bass, I've also taken to learning guitar and drums to a pretty high standard, which has allowed me to write and record my very own material (No one else would play with me!). I've been taking a break from playing for a while, but I've recently been getting back into, hence buying a new rig and being put in the direction of Basschat to sell me old rig. P.S I'm having a major dilemma as to whether or not I should sell my Ricky... I'll take it out on the gig this Friday and see how I feel! Ben
hi Ben Where are you playing on Friday? I got a wedding gig at Compton Acres and hope to finish early so would be looking to go and see some real music after the gig to regain my sanity? Welcome to Basschat (again?)
21. I have only limited experience of playing electric bass alongside jazz standards and a lot of the time i use the Abersol tracks and pan the original DB out of the mix. I don't have a DB and when i substitue an electric bass and play the same line as the original DB there is definitely something missing (apart from my technique) tonally. It is particularly noticeable on slower tunes. If i forget about the original line and play something that fits which suits my style (electric bass) the difference is not so great.
22. Over-rated is difficult to qualify though. It seems logical that the more a bass player is rated highly, the more chance there is of the bass player not meeting everyones criteria of "highly-rated" and thus ending up being "over-rated". If, to boot, they are in a commercially successfull band, for example Flea or Mark King, then there are going to be more opinions around (more people know who they are - they are a bigger target).so that further reduces their chances of being highly-rated as there are more people to snipe at them. Through no fault of their own they end up being over-rated. I don't even understand what i have written but it made sense at the time
23. A guy i know has a Les Paul that smells of piss and nothing he can do will make the smell go. He bought it off a guy whose wife found out that he had been unfaithfull. Instead of the normal cutting up ties and suits she opened up the case to his trusty Les Paul, dropped her knickers and let it all go.
24. Maybe if the thread was something like "Bass players i was told were great and when i listened to them i thought WTF!" I'd go for Entwistle who i always thought lived off his solo in My Generation for far too long. I'd add Flea to my list too. I am not saying they are rubbish - all i am saying is that when i heard them i couldn't work out why they were rated so highly.
25. Thats terrible. You should follow it up and make them pay - even for the sake of other bands.
