This disturbs me.
What disturbs you?. the fact i didnt know it or the fact that miming was how it was always done. If they played live it was a rareity you could see the bands always mimed. In fact it was famous for it. Many bands took the piss by taking the strings off the guitars etc. I remember Captain sensible of The Damned doing this and a few weeks later in the NME or Sounds he told how the producers assistant was noit at all happy and tried to get them to put them back on.
Initially acts performing on the show mimed to the commercially released record, but in July 1966 — just after the show had been moved to London — and after discussions with the Musicians' Union, miming was banned. After a few weeks during which some bands' attempts to play as well as on their records were somewhat lacking, a compromise was reached whereby a specially recorded backing track was permitted — as long as all the musicians on the track were present in the studio. The TOTP Orchestra, led by Johnny Pearson augmented the tracks when necessary. This set-up continued until 1980, when a protracted Musicians' Union strike resulted in the dropping of the live orchestra altogether and the use of pre-recorded tracks only. This accounts for a number of acts who never appeared on the show due to their reluctance to perform in this way
This is in complete contrast to live broadcasted 1980s music show the Tube, which insisted bands perform live and didnt allow backing tracks or miming . Leading to some bands who had been invited on deciding to not appear as they couldnt play properly live.

South East Bass Bash No.5, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2011
daz replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
well done you south eastern lot. Makes me want to have a go at doing one for this neck o the woods. Can we have a few more pics though?. -
Kepping youir bass in a case or bag and washing your hands before playing make a big difference. For once i can claim to practice what i preach too. I now automatically (at least) rinse my hands in warm water if im going to play the bass.

I have just noticed the 'youtube' version of Passage to hades' sounds like its been played though an old tin can compared to the cd coming through my old fashioned huge floor shaker style speakers. So some people who have not heard him may well be wondering what on earth all the fuss is about ?

If i can make a suggestion. It might be very helpfull, if you could take a screen shot* and upload it, so it can be clearly seen what the probl;em is. Screenshots are often in .bmp format so it might be advisable to chan ge to .gif or jpg or png Maybe uploading the pic to photobucket or flickr and showing it from there.? (* press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard then open up something like Paint and go to edit and paste your picture into it then save it)

do you mean that you have to click to allow it every page you load or just once per visit to this site ? I have just un clicked the General/advanced options you suggested and only had to click on thr 'allow; tab at the top of the page, once only. ? I think there may be an option to put exception web sites in ie: www.basschat.co.uk (somewhere or somehow) -
For some reason, always thought it was The Damned's "New Rose"....I can remember it being a celebrated event among the cognoscenti at school. But hey, I've just celebrated my 48th birthday and things is getting hazy! :-)
it was the first punk single, but was never on TOTP

Possibly the player of the most hypnotic bassline of all time Passage to Hades. (all 14 minutes of it ) I have his triple compilation album I could have been a contender on now and it reminded me.

my firefox is working ok. Do you have any add ons or extensions might be affecting it (such as pop up stoppers or browser hi-jack stoppers? ) sometimes the setting change on these to a safety default. -
I didnt realise that TOTP had live bands on in those days. No wonder it sounded so bad Jimmy Saville seemed to like it though
-
yeah the Rods were pub rock badwaggon jumpers, pretty good live though by all accounts. I am recording all the TOTP and will carry on till they stop airing them. Not for at least anoither year they said. Just wish they had started earlier. We missed all the good T-Rex and Alice Cooper, Sweet etc by not starting till Spring of 1976.

I bought a limited edition Zappa book off Nige last week. He posted it quickly, and gave me the payment option of instant bank transfer, which is a boon to non Paypal users like myself. I would do business with him again anytime.

Major harmony Arpeggio and scale exercise
daz replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Theory and Technique
Is there any chance of you recording a short clip to show how it (the arpeggio excercize) should sound? -
You've cracked a hat? Was your head in it ?

Grunge and Nevermind, the truth pops up again
daz replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
There arent too many albums that one hears and knows straight away that it is something special. but this was definately one of them. -
Usually just look at latest posts, unless im after something specific, or bored and looking for a topic to waffle on. So about right i'd say.
-
Possibly related more to Western movies and TV than actual american indian music i suppose. There does seem to be some sort of scale, but its all flute related Not than im expecting one in bass clef, mind you
