1. I think it depends on whether you play with a plectrum or not. IMHO, some higher tension flats aren't suited to such playing. They tend to clank a bit on the frets if you dig in. As I play with a plectrum I've settled on either LaBellas or Elites.
2. +1 for LaBellas! Or Pyramid Golds, if you can afford them
3. This site seems to have alot of choice - http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/
4. I've got an LTD Vintage 204 (black with white pickguard). It's a nicely put together, solid bit of kit, and I like the pickups in it alot. I'm not sold on the relic effect, but I don't like reliced guitars anyway. I'm thinking of selling mine if anyone's tempted - I need the dosh at the moment...!
5. I use springs and foam - best of both worlds then. If you overpack the level of foam a bit it helps to keep a bit a spring in it too.
6. The crimson red transparent one is rather tasty. Seems these new ones have an active circuit...?
7.
How bright were the halfwounds? I bought a set but they sounded dull just like flats... except for the G string which was niticeable brighter, almost in roundwound territory! Not sure whether I got a bad set...
Hmm, not sure. I bought some Status flatwounds recently and only the D and G strings were useable. The other 2 were horribly dead sounding. An example of nice bright smooth flatwounds would be La Bella 'Deep Talking Bass' strings.
8.
Someone did this on TB. 9. I mentioned the banjo as a bloke I used to know would sometimes use what looks like a similar technique, but use his nails to play along with what the thumbpick was playing.
10. Yep, I thought it was like a guitar playing style - or banjo even. Interesting to see it being applied to a bass...
11. I found this clip yesterday and thought the bass player had an interesting technique. Or it seems that way, if my eyes aren't deceiving me...
12. I'm tempted to get one of these and put an unlined fretless Mighty Mite neck on it. I'd put the Squier neck on a P/J that I have. That said, for now I may just see if anyone has a neck from a Precision CV they want to sell...
13. I think Clarky has a black Aerodyne for sale on here...
14. I think my favourite bass tone from the period is Joe Bouchard's, who played with Blue Oyster Cult. In particular, I'm thinking of the 'Secret Treaties' album.
15. The production of it has alot to do with it too. I'd say you're not hearing the actual sound of the amp and bass. It's gone through a process via the mixing desk before it gets to you
16. Get a plectrum and whack the hell out of the strings for 15 minutes or so - good exercise too!
17. The action on mine's about 5mm at the 12th fret.
18. I wouldn't worry too much about getting a super-low action with a fretless. Lower tension strings are always going to buzz when the action is low. Higher tension ones seem prone to thwacking too (but maybe I play too hard). Aside from that, it may be the neck that's not helping too. Are the strings making any slight marks where you're getting the buzzing?
19. How long has the EHX Bassballs been in circulation? Anyway, David J was the player who inspired me to take up the fretless. I'm still a big fan of Bauhaus, as well as one of the side projects to come from them (Tones On Tail).
20.
From the US, but an interesting thing IMHO. And in all the text, there's a massive metaphoric pond for Jon to fish for bullsh*t. I suspect he'll catch a few bigguns. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vintage-60s-Decca-Ba...=item2eb421c1cb
I must admit I like it's looks. But not the shoddy repainting of the body!
21. Well, if you just decide to sell the neck as is, let me know
22. I bought a Line 6 Bass Pod XT from him last week. The whole deal went through very smoothly and the Pod arrived safe and sound!
Beautiful.
Cheers! The photo makes it a little prettier than it actuallly is. It's got chips in the paint, various scratches, and one of the pots is a bit slippery. I rescued it from a student flat a few years ago, and it looked alot worse then
