1. I have one that I really don't use - will put it in the classifieds shortly if anyone's interested.
2. Cool Mike! I try and get to any Wilko gigs I can. Also The Blockheads are touring with Phill Jupitus doing some of the vocals up to the end of the year.
3. Looking at the pic of the CPC grilles in the catalog, you're right, they're not as nice as the stuff you got - didn't look too bad on the website!
4. The grill really finishes the job well - be interested in how much it adds to the weight though. CPC sell grill sheets of various sizes, as well as a lot of cabinet hardware - shipping is free if you spend over (IIRC) £40, so could be a useful supplier. Not sure whether the sizes they sell suit the required gap, though. Note that CPC also sell Eminence drivers, but they're usually more expensive than Blue Aran even when CPC's free shipping is taken into account.
5. There was a thread about this on the previous incarnation of Basschat. The bass Alan was playing is a Gougi. I saw John & co on the Solid Air tour in Cambridge - 2nd row, right at Alan Thomson's feet. Superb gig.
6. Note that there are 4 different neck options on US G&Ls. That LOOKS to be the (standard) 1 5/8" neck, but there is also a 1 1/2" (jazz width) neck as well. Both necks come in a choice of two radii - 7.5" and 11" (or is it 12"). If you're keen on a G&L, then consider importing from the US. There are a couple of decent forums where the sellers are real fans of G&L, and will describe them honestly. I got my 1998 red swirl L2K (alder body, jazz width neck, custom finish) for $700. The new retail on that bass in the US would have been about $1500 - you do the sums! 7. Yes, I have a Pandora P4XB (bass specific rather than the newer D model which has effects for bas and guitar). It's great. You should be able to pick up the previous P3XB for £30 odd on eBay - I think it's pretty much the same but with fewer effects (though am happy to be corrected!).
8.
...A good machine, but I think they're bringing out a smaller cheaper version?
There's an H2 coming out.
9. What's it like for just plain recording (say) a band practice/jam session? IIRC it has an internal mike as well as a mike input.
10. PM on its way - need to check with SWMBO...
11. What about that liquid skin someone mentioned a while back?
12. I've just picked up a CS-3 cheap on eBay, and also got hold of the Monte Allums kit. I'll do some recordings of before and after, should it be of interest.
13. I have a USA L2000 with the #6 neck (1.5" at the nut, 7.5" radius), and love it. I would say you can't get an exact P bass sound, as the MFDs have their own character, but you can get a massive range of sounds that get close to the aforementioned basses. Even just moving your hand position will do a lot - no real need to twiddle knobs in the middle of the song to move from fat thump (neck direction) to nasal snarl (bridge). Best to try rolling off the volume, bass & treble as well -you lose out in some ways by having them all at full throttle - those MFDs (even in passive) are HOT! Here's a sound sample thingy - click the green "play" button a couple of times, then twiddle the switches as you wish. In Dutch, but easy enough to work out. Can I also point out Ollie's review of a L2000 tribby on this site?
14. There's a few threads in the bass guitars forum on this subject, including discussion of the cheap eBay ones I guess you're referring to. Try these for starters: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2263 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1192

MARK BASS
Can you not order the Blacks one online? Heres the link Blacks £50 is quite expensive IMO. PC world has a few nice well padded laptop bags for around £30-£40. The only thing that put me off them was the lack of a proper handle on the top.
Surely eBay is the place for a secondhand laptop bag? I got a new Dell lappy recently, and it came with a bag which I don't want to use. I looked at selling it on the bay, but it wasn't worth doing, as they only fetch a tenner or so. So I'll be using that bag for bunging my LM250 in instead
17. Yes, I heard it - apart from the bits when I kept getting pestered by small son. Might be tempted to get the book - let's have a review of it when you get your mitts on it!
18. That's why I went for a (secondhand) US model from the States - they do 1 1/2" necks as an option.
19. What about this chap? http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/
20.
well i quite like the idea of jam sessions and would like to get back into going to some, but i don't know....the last few i've been to seemed a bit odd..... you'd just get an entire band get up and do a couple of songs, or four or five people who obviously knew each other and played together anyway getting up and doing stuff that is obviously rehearsed.
Yes, I've seen that self same thing happen - there's one jam night I've been to where it's become more of a chance for some bands to get up and do a couple of songs. I've since been to another one (very blues oriented) that is a lot more what one might hope a jam session is about. It's obvious there are a lot of regulars there, but they do mix it around. I went along without bass to see what it was like, and wished I'd taken the bass - there was a cricket match and a big fottball game on, so there weren't many people there - an ideal opportunity to step up for the first time.
21. An alternative would be to take an existing design - say the Electrovoice 806 (1x12") that has freely available plans (see the DIY cab thread stickied in this forum), and work on redesigning it to be lighter weight - i.e. keep internal volume the same but look at different materials - spruce ply is lighter than birch, for instance - and dropping it down to 1/2" with some cross bracing. Get to a decent timber yard and get some samples so you can do some analysis of the relative weights of different materials - inc MDF and chipboard as well as just the different ply types - this is (I would imagine) the sort of research type stuff that would go down well for such a project. I have one of these built, so I can tell you how much it weighs in it's "natural" form. I can highly recommend the EV 1x12" design with an Eminence Kappa in it - the Deltalites are meant to be very good too.
22. Nice review Ollie. Just to add a couple of bits that may (or may not) be of interest: The Tribbies are now made in Indonesia, IIRC. Main differences between the US and Tributes (apart from the obvious ones re neck and body manufacture/options): Tuners and bridge - bridge is the same design as the US models, but made in the Far East. Pots and switches and maybe preamp (although to the same design as the US models). Pickups are the same One warning I have read about - the Tribute 2500 (5 string) should ALWAYS be string through body - there was an instance of the bridge pulling out of the body when strung through bridge. I can second the TI superalloys as a great string on the L2000. I'm now using TI Jazz Flats - excellent again, as long as you prefer thump to fizz. Low tension, so a change in setup is probably required. I find that rolling the volume and tone pots gives a less "in your face" sound, and they are very responsive to hand position - so a move up away from the bridge can alter the sound without resorting to any knob flicking. For those wanting an idea of the sounds available from an L2000, take a look here - it's in Dutch, but just click the little green "play" button a couple of times to get through to a page where you can flick the switches and hear the relevant sound samples.
23. Yes, a Gamma 15" went in to it. Partnered with the EV806 (1x12" - Eminence Kappa) they sound superb. Just need to improve my technique now, as everything's out in the open! I'm considering making a scaled down version with an 8" Eminence with a little twist - a letterbox slot to accept my LittleMark 250 - to make a turbonutter practice amp
24. You've got to wonder about someone who describes the length of the whole instriment rather than the scale length... I've considered the Thomann 5 string acoustics for £130 odd, which seem a safer bet - they're 34" scale for a start. However, another bass/guitar in the house would most likely be frowned upon. :/ [edit for stupid typo]
25. You may want to suck the pertinent comments from this thread on BT and post it within this thread before it gets blipped - I'd considered doing so myself...
