1.
When you've finished sanding, should look like this with a finish on it. Please ignore the holes!! When I went to see Doug, I took this one with me as well, hoping he would say "this is the scratchplate for it" What he actually said was "dunno what the holes are for, none of the ones I made had a plate on 'em" Nuts! When you have finished you will have a very fine sounding and playing bass. Lucky man! Cheers.
Thanks for that...yeah,the original finish was like a coat of primer..not a great finish! I have started rubbing it down,no major dinks on the bass,I may try finishing with an oil for the time being.I had a look at the pickups, there seems to be some sort of date which looks like 83...would this be right? I think I will stick with the original brass bridge, though I do have a chunky chrome one that looks similar...think it came from an old Hondo.
2. Not wasting any time,it's currently in wee bits at the moment, although the stealth black mat finish was ok,I noticed the body is made of mahogany........so sandpaper time!
3. Go to e bay and do an advanced search for completed listings or have a look for e bay member wingmusic1972 they say they have more stock to shift.....you never know!!
4. The seller said that it was stock from a music shop venture that was closing down...the listing will still be up on e bay,and on the neck is a bar code label and the price marked on it is £29.99......I think they might have been in the wrong business! Its very dusty and has traces of mold on it plus manky strings but thats nothing! Oh and I didn't get the usual moan from the wife when she found out I bought yet another piece of sh*t from e bay!
5. It seems Doug Wilkes turned out a fair few guitars in the 80's,I googled the brand to find out...thumbs up all round and good enough for the likes of Pink Floyd to buy some from him.He is back on the go building and repairing guitars. This is a total bargain, hard to put a price on as the brand is not well known.I think this one is late 80's early 90's,a wee bit like a Jay Dee bass....sounds a lot like my Musicman Bass,The body is mahogany,Di Marzio pick ups,Schaller machine heads, nice straight neck, electrics work find, but the pots need a tighten up.Goes to show that there are still bargains to be had on e bay,as I mentioned, buy now price,£25.......the funny thing was, someone had been before me and made an offer!!!!
6. Just passing the time of day on Sunday evening, looking around e bay.....fell out of my chair when I seen this,at a buy now price of.....£25!!!! It has just arrived,in need of a good clean and some new strings, but I have had a wee go on it......bloody hell!! wow!!
7. Maybe some sort of memorial gig in her memory at a later date would be better.
8.
Looks really nice. Always fancied a Sandberg and for Mexican P bass price range looks like a winner. Jez
Could this be the Sandberg version of the Musicman Sub range?......
9.
I hate these kind of ebayers........Ive almost been stung a few times with old vintage fender strat guitars usually Jap ones.......I do lots of research so Ive been able to root out the fakes but a lot of people will think things like this are genuine....it makes me sick.....Im glad theres others out that at least try and stop these thievies and liars.....Ive also reported it to ebay and message the seller
I have sent yet another message to the guy and reported him also.....he knows it's a piece of sh*t alright!
10. I contacted the seller and told him that it was not a Tokai...he said,yeah....I'll change the listing...
11.
I have seen one with a tortoiseshell pickguard... really nice too. But a bit too "posh" for me A red one could be cool. Pictures?
Check out the red scratch plate on the Sub.....
12. Er,I have a red one on my white Sub........
13. Got one from the same seller a few months ago..maple,with Fender logo, fitted it to a Tokai,Made in Japan,Jazz bass body...love it!
14. I noticed this one straight away and as the owner of one of these great Encore specials, contacted the seller and asked him if it was indeed an Encore. He owned up straight away.As far as I could see, apart from the Fender decal and Squire neckplate,it was the same as mine.He said it has an Alder body, when in fact its Indian ash.I even put a bid in myself, knowing what a good guitar it was.I paid about £95 for mine a few months ago.....I nearly fell over when I saw what it went for.....if only they knew what it was that they had bought.....and payed well over the odds for!!!
15. Nice one!...yeah the guys(and girl)were nice to me,but I sort of knew from the word go that I just didn't have the right groove....Its always the same for me at auditions, within minutes I usually know what way its going.....anyway,stop messing about on here!!....get those songs learned!!!
16. Currently have 3 early ninties Encore P bass guitars,1has been fitted with Wizard Thumper pickups,1 with American Fender pickups and the other is the special limited edition with stock pickups.Nice weight and build quility, good straight neck and the only other thing I have changed was the tuners on 2 of them....I have had an original 1970's Fender p bass,in fact it was my first bass back in 1975.These feel and sound the exact same to me....Yes,sometimes I feel like taking the decal/logo off the headstock, but at the moment I am happy with these 3...bought for not much coin on Flea Bay!
17. Well done.....I auditioned for the same band last week, and errmm, maybe was not as good at the old reggae stylee as I thought I was....Maybe,my sh*t playing,age(50) put them off......the keyboard players highland jig put me off!!!(wig)
18. A couple of years ago I had a go at making up a Fender Precision replica.Ordered the F backplate online from e bay,got a decal from a site in America, pickups again from e bay...the body and neck came from...yes,e bay. Whilst on a short visit to London,I visited Denmark Street and searched every single music shop, looking for a set of knurled knobs in chrome to finish the bass....no chance! Guess where I git them from in the end.......It's little wonder that the music shops are going down the drain these days....
19. Derek Forbes...ex Simple Minds/Propaganda!.....and fellow Glaswegian!
20. If you cant make good music on a cheap bass....ie squier or the likes...you are a sh*t bass player...and a bit shallow....
21. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I was playing in Oban last night....well!!!....apart from the long haul up there,it usually is a top gig for us,but last night was a bit flat....the pub wasn't as busy as it usually was....we had sound troubles in the first half. The singer, who hasn't been well recently was having trouble hearing and remembering his guitar parts.....apart from that we went down well, got paid and got home at around 3.30 this morning...bloody tired!
22.
Falkirk to Oban is a long, long way to go for one gig (there's a song in there somewhere?).
Lack of decent paying gigs in Central Scotland forces us to look further afield...it is a hobby band and we have full time jobs.I recently played with a band in Rockers,Glasgow. We were handed £15 between 5 of us for an hours set! I played a jam nite in Coatbridge for about 9 months. Every Thursday I played in the house band for a pint of lager!...it has since changed and the players get about £15 each to cover fuel etc....We get £300 to play in Oban, travel in the drummers van and give him fuel money off the gig fee.The rest is split 4 ways.It seems most pubs round this way...if they decide to have any live music that is,pay about £130 to £150 for a band. Our singer has decided that even though we would be about 30 minutes tops away from home,he will not do anything for at least £50 a head.....fair enough,he owns the pa and upgrades it now and again, taking nothing from the band,I can see his point. I on the other hand would play for free!.......within reason!!.....but yeah, the gigs are starting to wear me out a bit......25 years ago this was a laugh...but to drag my 50 year old arse up to Oban and Skye every few weeks is wearing a bit thin....that and the lack off new songs being added to the set will mean that I will be looking around in the near future for something else!
23. Just packing my gear and washing my hair!....I am playing in Oban tonight,at The Lorne Bar!....anyone else out tonight and where are you!....maybe a follow up tomorrow when we can compare notes on how it was!
