1. Well the Fury arrived today (pics to follow) It was as described, with a couple of small chinks on the body. Might get some white touch up paint or leave it as is! Feels pretty light, not as heavy as my forum. As it was strung with flat wounds,I didn't really get a true idea of the sound. Sure it had that p bass thump, but I need it to ring out a bit more,so first job, some round wound strings. I noticed a slight rattle coming from the headstock, turns out the wing type bit of the tuner is loose on the stalk. It had been glued in at some point. A wee repair needed there then....superglue time! Volume control has a slight crackle,so scratchplate off and a squirt of electrical cleaner hopefully will cure it. The neck is very thin, but nice and straight. That's about all for now, will have a go later when the strings are changed, then it will be used on Friday night in Edinburgh at the Central Bar Leith. Will it be a keeper......ask me after the gig! (I say that all the time,I will get bored with it,it's a given!!)
2. Took a chance on the neck, and the body....new old stock,so maybe a nineties thing or thereabouts. Seems Peavey are moving out and these are the things that are on e bay. Keep your eyes peeled peeps.
3. Mmmm....odd! Well, not really...Turned up at the venue,a pub on the outskirts of Edinburgh with the drummer. We have recently joined the band and had not been at this gig before. The barmaid told us we had a choice of either setting up in the large, empty lounge, which didn't seem to having any heating on,or in the smallish bar area, which was seperated by sliding doors. We decided on the bar after speaking to the band leader on the phone. As soon as we started, punters started arriving. Mainly a young 20,s and 30's crowd, they were rather refreshed at the start time of 10.30.Within minutes we had them dancing...well,maybe it was more drink fuelled than music driven, they seemed to be enjoying themselves. First issue, dancing too near the band, arms and legs going everywhere, causing the keyboard player to fear for his rig as he held on too it a few times during the first few songs. Then the usual clowns coming up to speak to the singer in mid song, asking for songs we don't do! Oh I forgot to mention the drunk woman who, while we were setting up,told us to to f***ing get on with it and sing something! Anyway,it's been a while since I played this kind of sh*tehole,I looked around amused and it brought back a few memories! After one person too many stood on his effects unit, grabbed the mike and tried to sing, the singer told everyone to move back, whilst the barmaid moved some tables out the way to make way for the dancers. I suppose it was our own fault setting up in the bar,but the gig went on untill we stopped at 1.45! Spoiled by a few stupid folk and the general don't give a f*** atitude of the staff,it was a pain in the arse. During the break the drummer had been rattled by some young guys in the bog, whilst trying to answer the call, the demanded he hurried up and let them use the urinals, when he said he would do so,when he was finished, they decided to turn the hand drier on hi,causing him to flee, peeless in to the car park. I think it was maybe a bit of banter getting out of control, but he thought it may have led to something more serious.....I thought it was funny, but hey, that's just me!! Nothing new as far as young idiots with far too much to drink, not knowing how to behave when out...oh,then again, there was a few old drunks as well, one who would not give the keyboard players girlfreind any peace and another, who clung to the wall, sliding down it as we made our way through,Love Hurts.....He managed to hit the floor, and I don't mean dance,as we got to the end of it. All in all a pretty sad Saturday night out for me although I think the telly was gash last night and I got £50 and a free bottle of lager for my trouble.
4. Guilty as charged!! Maybe it's that old inbuild tight fistedness that leads us to those wonderful bargain USA made Peavey bass guitars! I'd rather think we have an ear for a bargain rather than eye! My first Peavey, bought a few months ago on e bay cost around £42. It is a red Peavey Forum and was covered in stickers. Managed to get them off and now gig with it. It sounds great. I play it through the TC Electronic 1x15 bass combo. Mainly pub gigs,it does the job.Soon as the Fury arrives I will get pictures up of both and hopefully the body and neck of the Foundation bass will arrive before the end of the week. I don't plan on buying anymore Peavey bass guitars.....(The wife walked in the room!!)
5. You might not be surprised to hear that it was me who outbid you on the white fury last week! It is in Edinburgh at the moment, awaiting delivery,so should have it tomorrow...sorry about that!
6. I too have bought one of the necks from e bay and a complete new,old stock Foundation body. Hopefully the neck will marry up with the body ok,jsy took a chance! But at £30 and £50,it would have been silly not to.....well, that's what I told the wife!!
7. It's grey. With the usual rubbish scratchplate. I did have a Sub before but had to sell it when skint. I put it on e bay and it was bought by a guy on Northern Ireland. Recently it was mentioned on here,as someone bought it fom Cash Converters. I contacted the new owner and due to the colour, scratchplate and markings,we confirmed it was my old bass. Needless to say the guy wasn't parting with it. Yesterday I was just killing time and spotted the Sub for sale on Glasgow Gumtree.I had put aside some money to help us over the holidays. Note to self......stop it!!!!!
8. She is fine..we bought a suite of Gumtree last week.....that makes us even......I hope!
9. Having an idle browse on Gumtree today,I found a Musicman Sub Bass for sale at £200............1 hour later it was making its way home with me. Then I had to tell the wife..........
10. That white SUB with the red scratchplate....that was mine! I bought it off e bay,had it for about 2 years and sold it to a guy from Northern Ireland, about 2 years ago. It was ''reliced'' by the previous owner, hence the worn paint. There is no way anyone would wear the paint off these with normal use!! I loved the guitar, but was really broke at the time and had to sell it! Oh,I also sold the rest!
11. Just used interparcel this week, great service. Guitar picked up and delivered to my door all within 24 hours,£11 ! I did value the item at around £50 as it was that price on e bay. They use UPS as carrier,in fact you have a choice of carrier. Similar item posted with parcelforce at local post office is around £18 and takes around 48 hours.
12.
Interesting thread................but I often wonder if there are any sh*te basses or just sh*te bass players? I've heard sh*te bass players make decent basses sound like sh*t, but give them a Precision with flats and they sound OK. I believe a good player can make anything sound good, provided it's set up reasonably. And can make something half decent sound great. Come on guys, everyone knows modern Stingrays are a million times more consistent than the old ones and to list a bass in here because you think the neck looks anaemic makes it sh*te - bloody hell next someone will be saying Rics are sh*te because they have strange styling! And I'll have nothing said against an Encore P copy - they even do a lefty. When fitted with flats makes a great impression of a Precision at a fraction of the cost - just what you need as a starter bass - plays in tune - decent action - quite playable - trusty Precision bass tone. A real P sounds so little different you start to wonder what all the fuss is about!! My lad graduated straight to a Stingray from an Encore - but has fitted it with flats and still gets it out occassionally to get a 'vintage' sound! So my take is there are few sh*te basses!
The early made in India ones are the best, made in the same place as the Sunn Mustang basses and American Squiers. I changed the pickups in mine for Fenders and it's great!
13. I believe Martin did one tour with them, not too sure....He was out of the band after the first album, which was a shame, but I still remember playing that album over and over as a kid on my wee record player..plus my dad's reaction to Ron Mael!! What the ffffff!!!!!! It's bloody Hitler on piano!!
14. Good to see a blast from the past, well my musical one at least,Martin Gordon on here. As I said before, when I was starting out playing,I heard Sparks and Kimono My House. The bass player stood out a mile (maybe my record player was faulty!) Anyway,I found out when Radio Stars came on the scene,it was the same guy on the bass!! Recently I have bought some of Martins solo stuff off the net and was surprised at how well crafted and catchy a lot of the stuff was...(showing my age..does anyone use the phrase catchy anymore!!) Have a listen or have a look in at his web page....he must have learned something from those old Mael sisters......
15. Radio Stars were a really great live act....I say them back in the day at the Glasgow Apollo. Martin did seem to have a stand out bass playing style, check out the Kimono My House album by Sparks. Just recently got in to his solo stuff and its pretty bloody good! Have a look for his web page.
16. Recently I have been listening to Sparks,Kimono My House. It was one of the first albums I bought and really has some perfect bass playing,by Martin Gordon...This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us was the hit single, but every song is a stand out! It seems that the producer,Muff Winwood managed to capture the sound of the Rickenbacker perfectly! In fact I would go as far as to say, that album got me in to playing bass! I also followed Martin's other bands,Jet and Radio Stars! It seems since then he has been very busy with a series of solo albums, featuring some very catchy clever pop tunes and also producing other acts. Have a look at his website! He is currently releasing another solo album, using crowdfunding, which seems to be the way forward these days as the old style record company way of selling music falls away....worth checking out! Any other fans of Martins music and bass playing on the Sparks album out there.....
17. Up late and watching BBC 4 .....Bob Marley,Ken Booth..loads of Fender basses....check out the guy playing for Ken with a rather nice p bass...I love his wee dance lol...
18. Sorry to hear about this..its deffo a fake and deffo an Encore... I recently sold one of these on ebay, hope it wasn't this one!
19.
Mmmm, Nice! Happy with the sound/feel of it?? Cheers.
What a sound....very Rickenbacker!! Really chuffed with it! A couple of wires came off during the sanding,I really should have removed the pickups rather than covering them up,but I soldered them back on,then renewed the jack socket.
20. It lives!!!
21.
Started a gig a few years ago and wondered why the bass didn't sound in tune for the first few numbers.... The tuner I use has a facility for tuning the instrument a semitone flat and I'd tuned up in a hurry - felt a right Muppett!
Did the very same thing at a gig in Glasgow a few years back,I noticed in the second song something was not right, putting it down to cold guitar coming in to hot venue.....picked up spare guitar for next song, the very same thing happened with that guitar, our guitar player sussed it and said, that new tuner...have you set it up right! Red face time, specially when I made some smart remark through the mike about the sound from the bass cabinet to the guy mixing the sound and a few of the punters shouted back, just tune your bass ya dick!....
22.
I think Wilkes called both of the models shown in this thread BI Supreme basses. The BI Standard bass had one Schaller humbucker in the P position. If these are both passive, there was also an active version (B/T). Not sure if the bridge is original on the black one. The only ones I can remember picking up had Schaller 3D bridges. Schaller hardware seemed to be standard throughout. My local shop used to carry the full range of Wilkes bases.
Could be an early one,it looks to be the original bridge, but not the same as any pics I have seen of the range, also I think the bass dates from 83.I removed the pic ups to sand down and the foam pads underneith had crumbled to powder! Date on pick ups indicate a date/year 1983.
