they actually responded the my emails yesterday & were very helpful indeed, actually recommending a different bass to the one i ordered. i intent to use it for a rockabilly band my brother wants us to form so i asked Thomman about setting my bass up,it will delay my bass by up to 2 weeks due to them being busy so i'll take it as it comes & do it my self. the bass they recommended is a Strunal 50/4 blue burst,so i'm going to phone them at lunch time & change my order, this bass has an adjustable bridge too so setting my string height will be a doddle. cheers for all the advice guys,it is appreciated so keep it coming. -
I'm pretty jealous of that check too, although i rightly defer to WPD on all things OTP. I'm pretty sure the one you got is the better one; the other is certainly Chinese. You'll have a ball. as Bilbo says, don't worry, just have fun. I'd add though that the left hand posture is still important; you don't want an injury. But once you're aware it takes only a couple of minutes to get right.
cheers fatback i can play my EUB fairly well considering i'v only had it a short while, will a proper DB be much different technique wise ? all pionters greatly accepted. -
You aren't going to get an Italian hand made bass that is painted white or covered in flames but I suspect you knew that!! It'll be fine; at these prices, the difference betwen one bass and another won't be a deal breaker. When it arrives, it is likely that the bridge will be lying flat (don't worry, its not broken) so you will have to initially set it up yourself. All you need to do is line up the bridge with the notches on the f-holes and then tighten the strings as you do on an electric (it'll take longer, tho ). A proper set up can come later but, for the first few days, just have a bit of fun and slap it about a bit.
thanks Bilbo, thanks for the info on the bridge too as that would've got me flapping somewhat. i half figured it'd be a playable bass but i tent to get almost panic attacks when buying blind. i'm already slapping it about a bit thinking about my first DB............. cheers. -

cheers guys. I'm having either a guilt attack or second thoughts, did i order the right bass ? i know nothing about these basses & couldn't find anything about them on the net so i hope its ok. i really liked the look of this one http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_hillbilly_hot_rod_bass_dbr_34.htm but thought its probably just a cheapo Chinese bass. have i ordered a good 'un ? i hope so. am i worrying for nothing probably. do i need reassuring ? probably. -
well i've spent my lunch hour for the last 2 days phoning Germany trying to get some info on two DB's i've been fancying, not to mention 2 emails which weren't replied to.(edit: now answered) anyroad i am a persistent blighter so persevered & eventually managed to speak to someone who had a brain. basically my choice was between two Romanian basses, one checkerboad finish & a white one with flames, both looked cool to me. i eventually discovered that both basses are exactly the same model,as i suspected, just with a different finish, plus £150.00 difference in the price tag & naturally being a tight arsed Yorkshire man i ordered the cheaper one -- me not daft. so in a few days a bloody massive great box should arrive, hopefully in one piece, containing my DB, K&K bassmax & gig bag. i didn't want a plain (not boring ) wood finish as i am obviously a bloody poser + these have a slightly smaller body so will make transport a tad easier,i just hope it sounds good & if i am impressed with it i'll order some better strings for it. ok here's a pick, EDIT: LOL IGNORE THE PHOTO'S I'VE CHANGED MY MIND & GONE FOR A DIFFERENT DB

it's ace isn't it,makes bass guitar seem boring & weedy
-
or if you can find one a Roland D-bass combo. piezo input socket & 3 different voice settings, one of which is super clean (which does as it says on the tin) i love mine to bits
Ah man if I'd known you were coming down to York I could've tried to be in and offered you a go on mine, although today was a bit mad tbh I wasn't home much. Out all day tomorrow too. I did warn you about the G4M showroom though!
very kind of you good sir. yes gear4music was a let down they didn't even have one of their cheapies in. -

thanks guys. re strings i was thinking of getting used to playing the beast before changing the strings & trying to slap it,maybee i'll just get them to fit some straight away. p.s. i nipped to gear4rubbish today, not to buy from them just to have a go on a propper DB as i've never played one before, the only 3/4 they had in was their Archer fully carved thingy,i was not impressed first off it ony had 3 strings on it,it looked awful just like someone had made in in their shed with a really poor finnish, was very quiet especially the E string that was almost silent (until it broke) all in all just bloody awful & they were asking £850.00 for it too. also it seemed huge, just a big as the equally awful 4/4 bass it was sat next to,maybee it's just me thats not used to being to close the the "beast". -

thanks for the replies guys it is much appreciated,so its looking like a it's plywood jobbie then i have my eye on 2 but cant decide what to go for,i'll list them in order of my favourites & see what you think- http://www.thomann.d...wh_bass_3_4.htm made in Romania http://www.thomann.d...bk_bass_3_4.htm made in europe (forgot to ask them where) i'm going to order a K&K bassmax at the same time. my budget is £900 so if i buy the most expensive i'll have to buy a gigbag at a later date, but i'll not be gigging with it until i'm comfortable playing it. will i need a preamp or will it be ok plugged into the piezo input on my amp (roland d-bass 210) sorry for all the questions but i'd hate to buy the wrong bass cheers Neil -
well i've sold my Big Al so can buy a bass very shortly but i'm having a wee problem deciding what to buy. i quite fancy something with an interesting paint finish,i'll be ordering from Thomman btw,so do i a.. buy a Euopean plywood bass (blueburst/checkerboard or flames) b.. buy a 22 3/4 hybrid (boring plain wood) c.. buy a 33 3/4 fully carved (boring plain wood) d.. i will be playing 50's rock 'n' roll & rockabilly (providing i can learn how to slap it) how much difference in tone is there going to be ? will they all stand up to lots of pub gig abuse ? also i plan on getting a bassmax pickup will i need a preamp ? (i use a Roland D-bass 210 combo & mighty fine it is too) e.. will i ever stop asking stupid questions ? my budget is £900.00 (i know OHM has one for sale but he's to far away & seems reluctant to travel) cheers. p.s. i've been offered locally a battered old bass that "might" be German, but needs setup, strings & some cosmetic work for £550.00 but since i no nowt about these i've given a wide berth.

i much prefer the look of the quantum myself & think the f/u is pretty ugly. mind a did own a flea bass once very briefly & it played really nice.
Honestly, consider waiting rather than buying crap. Learning to play a decent one is hard enough.
yes you are quite right,i've taken my cheaper bass off sale & will just sell my MM so i can buy a better DB. cheers.
