1.
Sounds like he only realized he was out of his depth once the audition started. We had a similar one, we gave the guy two months to start learning tunes from CDs , the first time he played with us his sat there doing nothing...."Er can you write me out a chord chart?"
I seem to have missed something, are you saying you set up an audition 2 months in advance or gave him the job without an audition and it turned out he couldn't play? Either way round seems kind of odd to me is all.
 2.
I think he's... wait a sec... 4 cabs X 4 heads.... OK... Yeah I doubt 20% of bassists have 3 or more rigs, including a practice combo. I could be wrong.
Remember a combo can't be split so counts as 1 configuration unless it has an extention cab output! I counted, and I have a total of 6 configurations if I include a 60 W guitar amp
 3. I thought this was rich:
3) Choose the right amp configuration Once you know where you’ll be playing, consider the right speaker configuration and the proper Bass Head Handling Power and their entire characteristics so to know what to bring there.
Because we all have 16 different configurations of amp/cab to decide on for each gig.
 4.
That is basically it, although the buffer needs to be done well to work properly. The thing that got people into the habit of believing it was explained in the link, the early wah pedals caused a lot of tone problems due to simple switching....
My Jim Dunlop wah pedal was atrocious and the only thing I've ever felt the need to switch to true bypass, which made the world of difference. 90's pedal too so it's not just the early ones (although I have a feeling they never really updated the buffer design). And of course it sits behind a buffered TU-3 which to my ears sounds fine.
 5. It could be worse, there are other forums on the net that are either dying a death (a local NI forum springs to mind) or just a hotbed of trolls (see the usual suspects mentioned somewhere above this post). So chin up lads, you do a great job and some of the punters are just going through a rough spot.
 6.
Guitar Guitar in Newcastle wasn't willing to get a bongo in for me.
Could be worse, you could be stuck with a policy of "if you want us to order it, you must pay a non-refundable deposit and promise to pay the rest when it comes in". Of course, this is the norm over here in Belfast music shops. But then, one time I ordered a Warwick 2U Rackcase, expecting a call in a couple of weeks to say it had arrived. I went back after 3 weeks having not received the call, and it turns out he hadn't ordered the bloody thing. I got the "well I have to order multiple items to make it worth my while". I should have told him to cancel it, but I wanted to build a good relationship with the shop (another thing you shouldn't have to do), so I waited the extra while because he promised he'd order it that week. I think in the end it took 4-5 weeks to get to the shop, but only something like 4 days delivery time from Warwick. Then, it turned out he'd ordered the wrong one, even though he knew the dimensions of my amp because he sold the thing to me! So, including the return of the case I think it took about 6 or 7 weeks. Guess where I shop now
 7. Hire for now and keep your eye on gumtree/ebay. The amount of second hand PA gear flying around is quite a lot and it's a buyers market. It minimizes the outlay if things don't work out and the value doesn't really go down terribly unless you trash it.
 8. There is some great stuff in here, especially 51m0ns post which is particularly relevant to my own band and I'm going to implement some of the things in this thread in my own band this Saturday. Just wanted to suggest a sticky version of this, seeing there are so many good points.
 9.
they are right about Sport and Sound. I think they have had the same packet of d'addrios in the window for the 5 years I have lived here. Mrs couldn't understand why I ordered from string busters rather than walk into town
Eek! I think they keep them there so they don't have to just call it "sport".
 10.
...Huge post about the hypothetical gig and file sharing...
I wasn't ever really going to comment on the issue itself but I just wanted to say I enjoyed the local references Bert's is a weird little time warp shop, even in Ballyclare, which is in a time warp from the rest of the country anyway! Have you heard the charity single?
 11.
Are you sure that is not just someone holding a broadcast mic?
Could be, I couldn't bare to watch it again lol
 12.
He should be shot just for being responsible for Justine Bieber. Is it just me or when he stops playing the track doesn’t lose anything and the camera is always away from him during any wee runs?
Yeah I'm pretty sure that he's being covered by a bass player not quite on camera - I thought I saw a bassist over to the right at some point.
 13. Hopefully this thread will go some way to stopping people referring to their acoustic (bass) guitar with a pickup/microphone in it as "semi-acoustic".
 14. At least the other vid is slightly better. I've always found these boss videos incredibly cheesy, and they seem to be aimed squarely at people taken in by flashy lights. Its a shame though, because products like this dont get a fair shout.
 15.
I really dont understand the have none of it responses. Hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me.
I think it's just that some people have had bad experiences that started out like this, but just got uglier as time went on and the person turned out to be a diva/control freak/mental case/madonna fan (delete as appropriate). It's not necessarily whats happening here though. I think the drummer's initial question is valid though - if the other band haven't commited to a practise yet then surely you're free to do the open mic?
 16. Tiny place for a blues band to play! For shame venue owners - you should really have considered that after 3 or so gigs they were not going to be suitable for shoving in a corner. Thing is - the OP said the band weren't paid, then they just got expenses, while the venue says they were paid in full. Did the guitarist run off with the money? Oh and this comment from the venue:
Unfortunately on this occasion the situation has escalated and has led to a member of the band venting in public, the band member has chosen to vent in anger which is essentially what happened to him on the evening in question when having to deal with complaints from our customers about his attitude.
Gets right up my nose because the original complaint was that the guitarist was the one who moved tables etc and caused the customers/venue trouble, not the bass player. Be careful that you're not just randomly pointing your finger around, it undermines any credibility in your assertions that the band was in the wrong.
 17.
Yes, but they just dont really work like that do they, they do have variations of 'on-ness' whereas digital doesnt. There is the number of and frequency of neurones firing to maintian a given level of 'on-ness'. Which may seem similar but I'm not sure that it is quantifiable with a simple sample rate analogy.
Yeah I was going for the collective rate of action potentials limiting our hearing resolution, which being in the temporal domain brings us right back to frequency and this is probably more mechanical than electrochemical. I think everything you're saying is bang on - the analogy falls apart if a fly lights on it and I agree its probably not quantifiable at all. I guess I was wondering out loud about the old assertion that Flyfisher touched on:
The anti-digital view is generally based on the fact that any digital representation of an essentially analogue thing cannot, by definition, be a perfect equivalent of the analogue thing.
i.e. there is a loss of information. So if there was a point where the digital gear could sample better than our ears could pick up, there would be no noticable loss of information. It's probably physiologically unquantifiable, and not really relevant when considering the other differences between digital and analogue, but whatever keeps us from our day jobs, right? I remember computer monitor/ video card manufacturers not so long ago boasting about SVGA, High Colour,True colour, at which point they stopped because "True colour" supposedly contained all the colours we could see the difference between. Apparently.
 18. Here is what I would like to know: What is the sampling rate of the human hearing system? Anyone know? Disregarding the feeling phenomenon (such as actually feeling very low frequencies in our bodies), surely there must be a rate at which the nervous system can transmit information to the brain for processing. We already some answers for vision (in terms of resolution etc) so why not hearing? Of course on this forum I've heard lots of talk about sub-harmonics etc so I know its very complicated and not definitive but I just thought it would be interesting to know what resolution we roughly hear at.
 19. I've found that most "remedies" are based around making you more comfortable, so that you're less likely to tighten and strain your vocal chords and emit the dreaded squeak. Find what works for you, but try to make things as easy for yourself on the night as possible, e.g: Try not to talk, and rest up as much as possible during the day. When it comes to the gig, do a longer than usual warm up, really take your time trying not to overdo it. then when it comes to the gig you can give it your best. If possible, consider doling out some of your vocal duties to the other guys. I'd be saving myself for the big song in D (gonna assume that changing the key is not an option?). If your band mates are understanding they may try and rejig the set so that you get appropriate resting time. In my opinion, there is no shame in saying up front that you're suffering, but you'll try to do your best. They might be quite forgiving.
 20.
But still no-one can tell the difference between those and analogue
I wonder if line6 rebranded one of their latest pedals as the analogue version of... without changing a single thing how many people would say it sounded better.
 21.
Shouldn't he be showing people to their seats.
22.
It had 4 days to run, had 14 bids and upto £170 so I sent him this! Dear mihajloperss, You've just added an Affinity neck to a body you know fine well is a Jim Deacon. I sold you the complete bass when you were using your Shippers1 account. The markings on the pick guard match with photo's I still have of that bass. don't try saying you've fitted it on a Squier body as I tried that plate on a few Squier's I own and it doesn't cover the control cavity route on any of them. Another thing nice try adding the bridge cover, sadly though it doesn't fit properly, you can still see the screws on the front edge of the bridge, anyone with a bit of savvy knows Squier's have the standard 5 screws along the rear edge of the bridge. pull it or re-list it with a genuine description or I'll report it! - unraveled1962 Got this back! Dear unraveled1962, I will pull it and re-list it with a full description. thanks Andrew - mihajloperss
Good job!
 23.
What Michael Tobias has to say on the subject. Snip
Well he does admit that he keeps everything the same except the wood. To me that translates as "if I change anything else the differences caused by the wood are lost". Also he says (quite rightly IMO) that "the only variable is the vibration of the string in the field of the pickup". Many factors can affect that, and I'd expect that the wood is not anywhere near the number one spot. Bottom line for me is that once the FOH/recording engineer gets their grubby mits all over it, its unlikely that I would be able to tell the difference, so I'd pick the wood for it's weight or looks. Actually scrub that, pick it for the look, because natural finish guitars are gorgeous!
