If it’s purely for recording, personally I prefer passive, then you can get a clean DI track and add any EQ tweaks needed after
-
Ah well then that does make a bit of a difference to the equation. It also means you’re in the unique position of being able to do a side by side comparison - I think a video might be interesting demoing the two (even if only to me 😂)
-
Well it’s definitely interesting! I suppose the proof of the pudding is how it sounds (or something like that) altho I think a pair of those Sims pickups with red/blue/green lights that do P/J/MM tones might be an easier way but I still think this Spear bass is pretty cool

Well if you’re anywhere near the North East you’re welcome to come and have a go! lol 😆

My Caveman Audio BP1 Compact arrived this week - and all I can say is WOW 🤩 All the words people use to describe it that do sound a little bit generic (like ‘it sounds so clear without being harsh’ and ‘it just makes you sound better’) make perfect sense once you’ve played through it. I actually don’t really know how best to describe it, it wasn’t until I’d practiced for a few hours that I really started to understand it - it’s not just a sound, it’s how it feels under your fingers, it almost changes the way you play the to a degree because it makes he dynamics & subtleties of your playing shine through. Combined with a bit of the Marcus Miller-esque sizzle from the SBP-2 and the well known benefits of the Cali76, I reckon I’m pretty satisfied with my board. I’m gonna get a HX Stomp (or similar - any suggestions for any alternative that’s good for bass, like the Hotone Ampero, Headrush gigboard etc, are very welcome) for Dep gigs which I do quite a lot of, but for now I think I’m done….. 🤞 🤪

These are genuinely stinky poo hot basses - they run great in passive mode if you don’t agree with Active P basses and the tone control works in both modes, and it looks class. The necks are amazing too, I can’t think of anything close to this for under £400-500. I absolutely don’t need it all but I still want to buy it just cos I know how good they are 😂 If you’re on the fence about these basses - don’t be, they’re unbelievably good

So V7 v V7 the only real difference is that the V7 is active then - the V5 quality is the same? I remember the passive switch/active bypass mode on my V7’s always sounded decent tbf I wouldn’t have expected a significant difference in slap sounds really, I rarely above the 9th or 10th fret when slapping tbh

I’ve spent tonight looking at 5 string V5’s/V5R’s (24 fret and normal) and I really fancy one, but when it comes down to it, I don’t actually need the 24 frets and the normal V5’s are at least a ton cheaper - I’d prefer a 24 fret and I would use it when practicing but I don’t have much use for it bar the odd Jazz gig when I’m allowed off the leash haha. The pickup spacing on the V5’s is 70’s JB spacing whereas v3’s & v7’s is 60’s spacing (except the V7 Vintage range), so I think that helps give them that great Jazz tone. I’m definitely leaning towards something in the range now there’s some feedback on them, I’m just undecided what to go for - the 24 fret body has grown on me, especially in 5 string

A pair of good quality jazz bass pickups that have come from an MTD Saratoga 5 (made in China version). Both pickups are exactly the same size, I measured them at 94mm wide, 23mm deep & 17mm high (see pics) MTD don’t put crappy electronics in their basses, even the non-US ones, these could make a great upgrade on stock pickups in cheaper basses or anyone building a 5 string jazz (why am I telling you what to do with pickups?! 🤣 I am sure you can work it out) I’m having a big clear out of stuff at the mo so just want them gone, and have priced them to sell, but I’m not sure what to charge, I feel £30 inc postage is pretty cheap for a good pair of 5 string Jazz pickups? Edit: I need to clear a load of things out so I’ve reduced them to £25, or I’ll happily swap for either - a strap (I wear my bass quite high, but need a Half decent strap), Strings or some half decent quality patch cables - nothing particularly high value but these are all things I will use and need to buy sometime Soon, but these pickups won’t be getting used so maybe swap my stuff lying about for yours?! 😝 Pics below👇🏼 including with the ruler - as I say neck & bridge are the same size Some clips of these pickups in action: Low End Lobster review with sound clips:

Even tho I said it was ugly this has made me think about getting one. There’s a nice one one the marketplace now, I prefer a 5 but I still like a 4 too. How’s the passive tone control?

These Orchid electronics DI’s are fantastic for the money - if you do some Googling you’ll find loads of good reviews, I’ve used their DI for various stuff over the years including recording and it’s up there with Radial JDI etc Anyway they do a Micro DI, here which could work maybe? https://www.showbitz.co.uk/product/orchid-electronics-micro-di/

Sorry for the blatant plug but I’ve decided to go a different route and I’ve gone for a Caveman BP1C, soo.. my Ampeg SGT-DI is up for sale in the Effects marketplace for about £100 less than I paid and still in as new condition, so if you’re on the fence but the price is prohibitively expensive I’ve done the decent thing and took the hit on it 😉 haha. It’s a great preamp clean and even better if you like the dirt section, but I don’t find I get any use out of the SGT circuit, which is its main USP

Sold Jim a compressor, great as always - said he wanted it, then promptly paid, always good craic talking to him via DM as well. 👍

I had a similar Eden head for ages in my younger days - I really liked it, especially the mid scoop sound the ‘Enhance’ use to give (although I eventually realised it also used to make get lost in the mix). I absolutely love the look of the Caveman Bass rack Mark King is using on tour at the mo - that’s got the lot TBF I do find with most amps I barely change the EQ, sometimes bump low mids or Cut treble slightly but that’s usually it. Not a single person had said that they need any extra EQ with the BP1 tho (and I have active EQ on my main gigging bass anyway) - I’m very close to ordering one 😆 It’s this or the Jad Freer Capo, but the month plus wait for the Capo (and all the Good feedback!) is pushing me to the BP1. I will likely get the compact version, just a financial decision but it still sounds great on all the demos I’ve heard
-
Long shot but I don’t suppose anyone has one of these they’re willing to sell? 🤞 Not looking to lowball anyone, just I have a busy few weeks ahead gig-wise and could do without the 4-5 week wait to get one. Cheers
-
You should have 14 days to send it back if you ordered it online, you might have to foot the bill to post it though - may as well play it for a day before you do tho and see what it’s like

Really good little compressor for a very good price here - I’m just having to have a clear out to get some new bits in Lusithand Alma Comp, it’s the Mk1 (I think), run at 9v or 18v for extra headroom (normal pedalboard power supply is fine). Clean dial for parallel compression and EQZ dial with mids switch to either darken or brighten the tone (best way I can describe it). Awesome little comp, and I’ll end up buying one again when I have more cash but needs must £100 including postage - it’s not boxed but it’ll be safely packaged

Now Sold 👍 Reduced - £280 inc post (or £285 with special delivery) Best part of £100 off a new one & there’s absolutely no wear/damage etc - barely been used at all. Cheap as bloody chips 🍟 😊 Ampeg SGT-DI preamp/DI/cab sim/overdrive - just over a fortnight old, as new condition apart from 2 strips of Velcro on the bottom which are very easily removed Includes power supply, original box & manuals etc - awesome pedal but I need something else and I’m not flush enough to keep it to use occasionally (comes with a 3 year warranty from Guitar Guitar) Trades - I’d take a Cali76CB in PX

Keeping this now so withdrawn from sale Sadowsky SBP-2 preamp pedal, bought less than 6 weeks ago from Thomann for a passive Jazz I changed my mind about buying. Used it for less than an hour at home, boxed with instruction booklet - no marks or anything on it £60 inc. postage or collect from DH2 County Durham for £55 Cheers 👍

Would you be alright running another preamp like, say a Capo or a Goliath if you wanted EQ options or a different flavour or is that using it wrong do you think? I suppose in that example it’d be almost used like a traditional DI, I’m wondering if it’s something you’d think unnecessary as the BP1 preamp is enough - hope that makes sense!

I am seriously looking the BP1 compact version of this, I was actually thinking of running another tone shaping preamp like the Goliath light in the effects loop along with the compressor - would that be overkill/unnecessary do you think? I’m not sure if I am looking at it wrong, or if it’s just the lack of EQ options scaring me 😆
