I’ve been saying for ages I wanted to see Sire get involved with MM style basses, that U7 looks awesome too, the U5 is a well underrated and although I am a BIG Sire fan, I don’t rate the Heritage preamp particularly and mostly played my P7’s/V7’s in passive. I rate Sire over Fender if you’re either doing like for like (MIM v The better Sires like V7/9 etc) or if you’re doing value Sire wins hands down IMO. I’ve stopped buying cheaper instruments and then losing money cos I always end up upgrading to the better one than I wanted anyway, but Sire are the budget brand I really rate. That being said I can’t see the point at all in the V10 - same preamp/pickups as the V7 and same preamp as the £199 V3! Same complaint with the F10 - I really think it’s bizarre to have the same preamp on the “boutique” range that u do on your cheapest Jazz. Apart from having Passive tone in active mode (my pet hate when people don’t do this!) and i guess parametric mids which are ok, I think the preamp sounds crap. The bass is at 20hz and is only useful to cut low end which then means you have to set your mids as low as poss (~80hz I think) to get any low end boost, meaning it only really functions as a 2 band for me, the treble is way high as well, but it’s easily replaced and for a lot of people the Sires are just great mod platforms anyway. I’ll probably buy one of the acoustics and never use it, I look forward to it sitting in the studio unplayed until I inevitably sell it on for 1/2 what I paid!

There’s a really good video comparing the Bassrig ‘64 and the Capo - I’m gonna look for it actually and post it up**, it kinda shows that the Capo can do what the Bassrig does plus a load of other stuff besides. Bassrig still comes out looking good but it really shows what a good bit of kit the Capo is **Here it is:

**NOW SOLD. DemonFX Harmonic Booster Clean Preamp pedal - this is a very good clone of the much more expensive Darkglass Harmonic Booster pedal. Perfect working order - it’s just had light use (at home & in a few rehearsals) & still in good condition, . I recently had a go with a real Darkglass HB pedal and they sound almost exactly the same to my ears. Bought from AliExpress earlier this year, cost about £60 with taxes & shipping, but I’m just not using it and it’s that time of year where I need to sells bits off before I can spend! It has a Bass and Treble Boost/Cut, then a Mid frequency selector between 250hz - 2.5hz and a Mid Gain knob, there is also a Boost knob, and a Character knob which is really like a wet/dry for how much of your original signal you want through (all the way counter clockwise is almost all of it, and all the way clockwise is none), so there’s a huge amount you can do with this pedal. but it’s all clean - there’s no distortion or saturation at all The DemonFX (and the Darkglass) Harmonic Booster is set up at the following frequencies: Bass: +/- 20db @ 80hz Treble: +/- 20db @ 5khz Mid: +/- 20db @ Mid Frequency Selected Mid Frequency: Between 250hz - 2.5khz Boost: +/- 20db clean boost Character: Blend in the perfect amount of tone-shaping circuitry Power: Normal 9v pedalboard power supply works fine Price is £25 including U.K. postage No box, but I’ll make sure it’s wrapped and packaged well so it can’t get damaged in transit ** I’ve priced it keenly so it’ll shift quickly. I have some other bits to buy, but need to move other bits for space as much as cash! It really does sound the same as the DG one, so if that’s something you fancied then this is a very cheap way to try it! **

Yes! Absolutely hideous combination

Another one I forgot to add is Black hardware, especially tuners. Awful

It’s a little bit pricey considering condition, however it looks like it’s the active version which do go for a bit more. Personally, if I had played it and liked it, and none of the issues were more than visually looking a bit old & ropey I wouldn’t feel aggrieved at having paid about £300 for it, but I do think you’ve got plenty of things there you could try and chip him down on, and I feel less aggrieved if I paid closer to £250 for it, but even at full price, if it plays well and you like it it’s not a rip off at all - Westone Thunder’s are nice basses!

- No passive tone control - Having a passive tone control, but it doesn’t work in active mode - Weird square (usually) 2+2 headstocks - Pointy angles on the body - MusicMan Bongo’s 🤮

Caveman Audio BP1, a very, very, very short review...
Paddy777 replied to bassmayhem's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yeh I’ve been using it a lot this last month, mostly live direct to IEM’s but I also use it direct to amp for one band I play with and it definitely makes a big difference to your tone, you still get the fat, clear tone you get direct -
What a beautiful P-Bass tone that is, very very nice 🤩

Backup 5 String Passive Bass recommendations please
Paddy777 replied to Pinball's topic in Bass Guitars
Sire P5 or V5 second hand 4 or 5 string shouldn’t cost you more than £300, both passive and easily as good as a MIM Fender, or if you want to be even cheaper then a Harley Benton of some description is a good call, but I’d definitely stretch to the Sire (even the active V3/P7/V7’s all have an active/passive switch and work in passive mode anyway so any you could get a deal on would probably work and you could just not use the preamp) -
Oh really!? Well thanks for ruining the kids Xmas..! 💸 Haha

That’s a very useful comparison actually. Currently I have the Caveman BP1 Compact and it’s a beautiful clear tone with a nice bump in the lows, but I am definitely going to get a second preamp, either to run in the effects loop if the BP1 or just to use for other gigs where a bit more variety of tone is required. The Capo is top of my list (I’d have probably bought it instead of the Caveman had there not been a 5 week backlog when ordering) but if an SLO came available I think I’d be just as happy with it - if you ever decide you’ll let the SLO go pls do give me a message, I’d be very grateful! I don’t really use many effects otherwise apart from Compression, I definitely think it’s a road if I started down I’d end up obsessed with niche octave pedals from the 80’s or something else I couldn’t afford and probably isn’t really necessary 😂
-
I always like the look of the SLO, I don’t need any gritty tones really but still like a bit of tube hair sometimes and I’ve always been impressed with what I’ve heard from it in sound demos etc, but then I kinda felt like I was missing the point with it a bit using it as an entirely clean preamp, I don’t mind dropping £500-600 on a great preamp/DI but not if I’m gonna be in a square peg/round hole situation with it. Once I’m a bit more flush I’ll probably still get one just to scratch the itch , that or a WR Goliath!

That’s pretty immense 🤩 What music do you play with all that lot?

I play a Bartolini’d-up MTD Saratoga 5 and love it, I’ve been seriously interested in getting one of these, I’m waiting to see if one ever comes up second hand, cos they sound fantastic on the sound demos I’ve heard As for OP - the Sire M5 (or M7 - only upgrade on M7 is wood/finishes) is a really great option if you’re looking to keep it under £500 - there’s an M7 4 string on the marketplace now for £325 in fact. Pickups are decent, preamp has parametric mids, active passive switch as well as series/parallel/single coil options - a proper modern double $$. Low end lobster some good reviews and comparisons for this bass - worth a look, but as often the case with Sire - you won’t get better at the price point. Ibanez also do some pretty decent mid range double humbuckers including some that come with factory Nordstrands and decent preamps but the Sire M5/M7 is a corker

That looks really nice - much better than the stock/website photos, I’m seriously thinking about getting one in five string next week

Sold my Ampeg SGT-DI to Stevie - super easy to deal with, absolutely spot on

I watched a YouTube video the other day with the 1176 being used on bass - it didn’t sound anything special to my ears but I was listening on airpods rather than my studio headphones so I dunno if I missed the nuances, it certainly won’t be usurping my cali76 anytime soon but YMMV
