And the Winner is.........................
Delberthot replied to Delberthot's topic in Amps and Cabs
had my first gig with it last night. Took a while to get the sound sorted, not that there are many controls. I was very disappointed at first as I had it at the same level that i would have had the GK at but the limiter light kept coming on. I used to have the pad button pressed in on the GK as if it were an active bass but this one doesn't have it. I'm assuming that it was only the limiter kicking in as there was no distortion and it only blinked as opposed to staying on. i thought this was strange as this amp is rated at 600w and the GK was 480w so I thought I'd be able to run it at the same volume or maybe a bit higher. After another few songs, I dropped the height of the pickup, increased the preamp volume and now it only does it if I attack the bass really hard. The preamp o/d light comes on with every note I play after I did this indicating that the valve is overdriving and it sounds fantastic. Not sure if that reduces the life span of the valve or not or whether it would be worth changing it for another one as it doesn't affect the warranty doing this. I'm not entirely sure that it will be loud enough for my pub band with no PA support so may look into getting another efficient cab like my Schroeder 1212L but with more drivers to push more air. Overall, i love the sound. I have it running post EQ into the desk and it sounds amazing through the PA. Very clear -
Buy one and gig it. That's my advice. But buy second hand so you don't lose much/anything if you decide to sell it. I wouldn't have the basses i do now if I hadn't tried lots of other basses in gig situations. That's the most important thing, how it sounds when you play it live. I bought a Flea & and a Thumb NT5; used them for one gig and then sold both of them. Back to the original question - I've had 7 Stingrays but only one Flea. The Flea sounded light and brittle compared to the warmth of the Stingrays but I had the strings about 2mm off the fretboard and it played like a dream

I used LaBella rounds on mine. I'm sure that Stringbusters do their flats in shortscale as well

I'm planning an overhaul of the wiring on my gold bass at the beginning of the year. It curently has 500k long shaft pots which are very easy to get as that is what Les Paul's use. Since I have a single coil pickup, I wanted to change this for the more conventional 250k pots. The bass is rear routed so I need long shaft pots but cannot find any. I've searched the sticky at the top and have found that Basspartsresource do them but since the exchange rate isn't too good, I thought I'd see if any UK companies are doing them. I can't find anything so i thought I'd ask here. Also, does anyone know where I could have a wiring harness to my own specification done? I have conceded the fact that I cannot solder and would prefer to have someone else do this for me. If there are any basschatters who are good with a soldering iron and live fairly close, I would be happy to come to you to have it done as I'd rather have it done properly.

Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust' was the first song I played on Christmas morning 1987. I had a Marlin Slammer P bass copy, a yellow curly guitar cable and a Squier 15w guitar amp

Maybe JE is an also ran due the fact that he successfully threw a 7? Paul McCartney's a bass player? Who's Tom Jenkinson? etc?

John lennon was asked if he thought that Ringo was the best drummer in the world. he replied saying "he's not the best drummer in the beatles" I am confident in my abilities. i haven't heard anyone better than me in any pub or band setting ever. i don't believe that this is showing off, I simply believe that there aren't any decent players near where I live. Its been a help and a hindrance. Its given me all the work I need but its stopped me from becoming better than I am now. I love playing but am not big headed; leave that to the guitarists.

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get a hold of the saddle that comes with the shuttle combo so I'm going to have to rig up something myself to attach it to my cab stand. How far do the screws go into the amp? i don't want to get ones that are too long and end up poking something that i shouldn't -
I like to go there from time to time and tell them Jaco was crap just to wind them up as they seem to think that everyone in the world is influenced by his playing. They weren't even allowed to talk about their own election. There's a lot of religion but science books in america contain a paragraph that states even though science has proven the theory of evolution, the story of adam and eve is still true. Or words to that effect. I've just been on there just now to see if anyone had one of those spare thingys that hold the Genz Shuttle to the cabinet as I'm trying to figure out a way to attach it to my cab stand

Most singlecut basses, no, all of them. they look too weird. I hate Jazz basses. Could be because I've never been able to get a good sound and it seems that every new mainstream bass that comes out is a clone of the Jazz. Both could be because I used to frequent Talkbs all the time and it seemed that every topic was about one or the other. Anything with more than 6 strings. Nothing to do with what they are used for or the people that play them; with more than 6 strings I think that the body begins to look out of proportion to the gargantuan neck. Any shape that has Darkstars fitted. I'm sure they are the tits but they don't look like they belong in anything other than a semi-acoustic.

I think it may be older and in Guitarist instead.

One of if not the most impressive things I have ever heard is that after the Ox bought the farm whilst out his tits on drugs, Pino played with the Who in Las Vegas 4 days later. Assuming that there was chaos for at least a day after this, he had maybe 2 or 3 days at the most to learn the Who's set. Now that's talent

Buy online, it's the future.

Online I've bought from fendershop, guitarbargains & Thomann but as the Euro is very low just now, they're not cheaper anymore. Had good service from Blue Aran when the drivers in my Behringer 4x10" tried to leave the cab and I've ordered some speaker components from them with no hickups. My latest purchase is from Darren at the Bass Merchant. Answered every email and it should be with me today. Mentioned on a thread here that I would email him to find out when it would be coming, he must've read it and emailed me before I was even up the next morning. Most of my purchases are on Ebay. I've ordered stuff from basspartsresource from time to time but they never answer emails. I ordered something by mistake and wanted to change it literally seconds after ordering as I realised that I had made a mistake but never received a reply. The dollar's going the same direction as the Euro but bassguitarstrings.us are good when the rates are better. -

My soundman is our guitarist. It will be used in the wedding band. We were thinking about it a few years ago but there is very rarely enough room to run a snake to the back of the hall and find a space for anyone to mix the sound. I normally run my amp post-eq as it sounds better but I'll see how the Shuttle sounds pre when I set up on Monday night. Its mainly the mics that use the XLRs on the desk so I think I'll try it set at Mic first and then switch to see what gives me the best sound. I was forever overdriving the signal going into the desk with the GK but the Genz doesn't have a level control so that may be the deciding factor on the night - whatever option doesn't send the signal meters off the scale will be the right one. -
I had the pickguardian thingy in all of my Ricks as my natural playing position is right over the pickup I never get tired of this picture

You can get the proper Fender replacement ones from Basspartsresource.com. I've got an SD 1/4 pounder in my gold bass and its a very powerful pickup, moreso than the original. I've got a Lollar one in my '57 single coil bass and its very growly and warm.

I gave my gold bass a Winter check up at the weekend. It has an ebony board so I just went straight over the lot with 000 grade steel wool. I did get some of the metal on the pickup but I had the strings off so was able to get right in and get it out. I also use it on my Wenge neck when it gets a bit gunky. Couple of rubs and its as smooth as the proverbial

I've had my differences with Bass Ferret in the past but he was right on the money there. I can't get a Rick to sound like Rick, a Stingray to sound like a Stingray. If I'd actually tried them out before buying I wouldn't have bought them. FWIW The GK Backline 600 is GKs biggest selling amp and is literally a 400RB made in China. As confirmed by Bob Gallien.

Fantastic. Now that I know there are other people here who have them, what should the last switch below the DI marked line/mic be set to when running it into the PA and what is the other one for? The manual isn't too clear. Should be getting my amp through today -
Something (else) to argue about at Christmas time

What's missing are songs that I've actually heard of. I haven't heard of most of these songs which is strange considering I have 162GB of music on my PC. These lists are always pissoir and about as useful as tits on a boar. My 100 greatest whatever is going to be different to your 100 whatever. There's always sh*te in there as well like when Meatloaf is in the top 10, the guys albums are f***ing corny musicals. Then someone could come along and say that they think that Meatloaf is the tits.
