1. I switch between a Jazz and an EB0 without trouble (though not often - I mainly play the J)
2. I haven't tried one, I just like the look! I think the nut width is the same as an US Standard, but shallower front to back. I hope it's not too J like as that's the main reason I want a P - I much prefer the necks, even on the cheapest copies. I see some Ps have a 1.75" nut - is this standard these days, or just on a few reissues (I know I tried the Mex 50s P which had a 1.75 nut and it felt huge - I liked it, but if the slightly smaller nuts are the standard on most P style ones then I'd be happy with that too)
3.
The heads must be a different thing to the combo then.
I think the combos are the OTB500 and an SP212 cab in the same box, nothing else. I had the combo for a while, but it was faulty (speaker was buzzing slightly at all volumes - they did mention there was a problem with the entire combo line and thought of withdrawing them, but that hasn't seem to have happened) so Orange replaced it with the separate head and cab instead - I didn't notice any difference. I really like mine - it breaks up quite early, but I play very lightly and don't have a problem with clean headroom. Keeping the gain low (at around 9 o clock), I find there is plenty of volume left on tap. Most of the time I go through the PA as well, but there hasn't been a problem in quite loud pub gigs with only a vocal PA either, with plenty of volume left. Aled
4. Right, had a bit of a crude geek around on Paint! I think that the gold works best. Though I'm still tempted by the red (despite the fact that it's gone royally wrong in my pic!)
5.
Think gold would make it look a lot more vintagey.
Yes, I think so too. Trouble is those plates are quite expensive things to just try out! Could be amazing... One of my favourite looks for a P is natural ash/maple board and black guard, and I'm thinking the same could work on this combo. On the other hand I can't get the red out of my mind either. Maybe I should concentrate on getting the damn thing first!
6. http://www.rowlandsmusic.com/store/Bass-Guitars/Fender/American-Special/Fender-FSR-American-Special-Precision-Bass-Maple-Neck-Hand-Stained-Honey-Burst-Bass-Guitar/prod_1637.html Isn't it lovely? It's just the standard American Special in a limited edition finish. Would need pickup and bridge covers of course, and I'm undecided between black/anodised gold/red scratchplate or keep the white. Whaddyathink? Could possibly be mine. We'll see. Aled
7. Absolutely battered. Grille has had to sawn off, but I still have it. Two faulty drivers, but two are working. Back has been removed so I'm not sure if I have the screws for it, and one of the side handles have broken. £60 anyone? Collection only as it's bloody big! I could deliver/meet up within reason for petrol money - I'm up and down Wales quite often and play London every once in a while. Used to look like this and used to cost about a grand I think: Will post a current pic when I can (it's not at my house at the moment) Aled
8. Good god that's nice! Interested in any trades for anything? Flightcase? Monitor screen? Guitar amps? Slightly faulty bass head? Kidneys?
9. Tempted by this, though I'm skint. Got some studio stuff, mics and amps to consider for trades though. Will try to find money!
10. Ah, heck, sorry 'bout that! Will sort it now
11. For sale / possible trade: Marshall DSL401 combo (scuffed case, missing feet) - £200 Marshall 3530 rackmounted bass head (dodgy input jack, rattly case and missing knobs - £150 Thanks! Aled
12. Yipee! It sounds quite ace. Very old school with the Jazz. There is, however, a slight buzzing while playing - it's the speaker, not the amp itself - it disappears if I touch the speaker whilst ringing a note. I've never bought a brand new amp before, so could it be that it just needs breaking in? Or just tightening of screws or what have you. I'd rather not have to send it back as it seems like a very small problem.
13. Hey there, Got a Marshall DSL401 guitar amp for sale. Battered but working condition. Looking for offers, ar a trade/PX for a half decent P-style bass (Fender 50s Precision ideally... but not in Fiesta Red!). I'm based in Wales and travel up and down the country regularly, as well as England depending on gig schedule. Aled
14. I've just ordered the Bass Terror Combo (TB500C). Can't wait for it to arrive! Not fussed that it has valves in it (actually, I'd probably prefer if it didn't), but I've tried the head on a radio session and the combo in a shop, and really liked it. Might try to post some clips in anyone would be interested.
15. Cab now sold - thanks Brabasam! Head still available - looking for £150. Any interest?
16. Any interest in trade/px for a Marshall DSL401 guitar combo?
17. Hi there, Thinking of shifting my current bass rig: Marshall 3530 head. 300w. NOT IN FULL WORKING CONDITION. Almost guaranteed to be minor faults - dodgy input jack, and master volume not working properly. Seems to be stuck on very loud. Few knobs missing, and has seen a lot of use so not in great cosmetic condition. Fitted in a 4u rack case which is solid but battered. Amp case itself could probably do with some new new screws / tightening of current ones. Ampeg B410HLF Full range 4Ohm 4x10 cab with horn and attenuator. Full working condition, but a few rips and scuffs on tolex. Not too heavy - nowhere near the weight of the SVT equivalent from what I understand - I regularly lift and carry it by myself. Has a set of castors fitted. Here's a poor pic of both together - though it doesn't give much of an idea of their condition - I'll post more as soon as I can: Any interest? I'm based in Wales but we tour quite regularly so could possibly deliver, depending on gig schedule. Would prefer to sell both together but don't mind splitting. Not sure how much to ask so just looking for an idea really - and I'm still not 100% I want to sell (it's a solid 99% though!) Aled
18. I'll take it if it's still available! Could pay by cheque or Paypal (cheque preferrable, could post today (Thursday) Aled
19.
It doesn't say much about the Baliol. You might want to get an experienced player to take a look,a dn you might want to check how well they set up these basses before they sell. Having been through the pain of researching to get my own first db, I'd say the following are the things to take into account: Any 3/4 size is good. Ebony (not 'ebonised') board is a must All laminate is fine, especially if it's an old bass. Solid top is a bit better. Strings - you'll end up changing them anyway eventually, but if you mean to play in a loud band you might want to think ahead to using a magnetic pickup rather than a Piezo like the shadow. If you do go that way, you'll need steel strings. Also, not all strings are equally bowable, so you might want to think about that if you mean to take lessons with the bow. Strings are pricey, so you might want to get the ones you want included when you buy. Don't agonise about this bit though. The strings/pickup quest seems never to end. If the bass is good, you can sort those things later. Bridge: adjustable is great, if you can get it. If not, you need to be sure the action is ok for you. Hope this helps.
Hi, very helpful, thank you very much! I rang them, and it's a 1960s all-laminate. The bridge is not adjustable, but he said the action was ideal for country/bluegrass stuff. As I'm not used to playing upright, I might be able to come to terms with the action however it comes>?! It isn't an ebony board, however. The guy wasn't sure what it was, but thought it was pearlwood. How big of a deal is this? Aled
20. Hi, I'm not a regular poster, but I'm hoping someone will be willing to offer me some advice regardless! I've had a good search on older threads so I won't start yet another "best starter bass" thread, but I'm on the look for a cheap double bass, to play country/bluegrassy stuff mostly. It'll have to be paid for on the "Take it Away" scheme as there is no other way I could afford one, so it rules out buying used off the forum, or from a store that does operate the scheme. I found this while searching around: http://www.moseleyviolins.co.uk/double_basses.php specifically, the 'Baliol', which is the 4th bass down. That's around my budget, so I'm not hoping for something incredible, but would that be suitable for my needs? It kind of looks small to me (I'm not up to scratch on the size differences and their implications). I'm not really in a position to go any higher than £800, and a pickup would definately be handy as an insurance for gigging. Thanks for any help! Aled
21.
The amp will give at least 150W into the 8ohm cab which should make it really quite loud. When you say it was worse with the old cab do you mean that it is worse now or that it was never very loud with the PA cab? Either way there are not many things that could go wrong with an amp that would make it quiet without making it very distorted. since you liked the sound it doesn't seem as if much is wrong. Try gradually turning the amp up full and trying different inputs if you have them. Also try changing your lead and trying a different guitar. Let me know how you get on.
Phil, thanks for your reply. What I meant was that it was worse with the PA cab. It is much better now, although it's almost decent practise amp-like in terms of output instead of 300w into a 4x10. I realise 300w isn't a huge amount of power for bass, it's just that I seem to recall it being quite a bit louder with the old 4x12 cab (I realise that speaker sensitivity and such play a major part in this as well) However, the more I think about it, and given that the basic sound and response of the amp seems fine, I'm starting to feel it must be my technique, as my style has changed quite a bit since I used the 4x12. I won't really be able to tell until I get a proper blast with a drummer and a guitarist, as I tend to play slight harder then anyway. The bass and lead seems fine - healthy level when DI'd into my recording system.
22. Hello all, I've just bought an Ampeg B410HLF 4ohm cab from this very forum to bring my rig back to life - I've been playing through a VERY cheap PA cab for a while, which wasn't too great, as my main Marshall 7412 cab is completely fecked at the minute. The head is a Marshall 3530 - solid state, 300w into 4ohm. As far as I'm aware, it was made in the early 90s, and I bought it used (with the 7412 cab) around 2003. I've never taken it be services, so god knows when was the last time anyone had a proper look at it. I tried it with the new Ampeg yesterday, and while I was quite taken with the sound, it didn't seem to give out much welly - I could crank it almost all the way up in a small living room and not have to raise my voice too much to be heard. I was playing quite lightly, and the gain was quite a way off from clipping, but it still seemed a bit to quiet. It was similar, but worse, with the old PA cab, but I has assumed that had been down to fact that the PA cab was 8ohms. So, is this par for the course with a 15-20 year old amp that has potentially never been serviced, and does it point to an expensive job? Thanks, Aled

Hello

Just thought I'd say hello. I've been reading the forums for quite a while, but felt an urgent need to register today, as I found a cab going that I had to have! Aled
