1. You have not said what model, wattage or speaker is in there. If it has the crappy Blue Marvel speaker or the slightly better Sheffied speaker then look for a Black Widow replacement as it will work just fine without having to check the matching of cab and speaker. I have done this for a TNT combo and it does make a difference as you could really drive it with Black Widow but the Blue Marvel was flapping really bad, even at below gig volumes in the end.
2. Have used plenty in my time. A TNT150 BW equipped with bi-amped bright box. A PA with PV Bass bins & tops & 2000w power amp. Our cuurent PA has the PV bins & tops. No Problem.
3. I have been on the lookout for a practice amp since the summer after moving house and no longer having a dedicated music room with my kit setup. My rig lives under the stairs and only comes out for gigs. I have not been desperate enough to buy a new one, but regularly scan the local paper. Tonight I saw one for £25, which I have bought. Is it practically new and is a PROformance 20 BA. The same amp can also be bought as a Stagg. It seems fine for my use and sounds ok with my active basses. The sound with headphones is really quite good. It also has a line input which is handy. One of our sons has started playing guitar and the other one plays drums and has a Trapps kit for the house. I could do with some jams with the 3 of us so this will help me get a sound at last. Has anyone any experience of these amps? I'm not going to complain for the price though. The online reviews are limited and varied
4.
Keep the Ray, ditch the song.
+1 I string mine with nickel roundwounds which helps a bit. It's a 2 band eq Ray & I have bass & treble up full and use a pick for quite a few songs.
5. Interesting thread. I've not come across one of these loops yet at a gig, but if I do I'll know how to deal with it.
6. This is all quite intersting. I use a pedal type compressor in my fx loop and it's the first in line. I also have an octaver and I have read elsewhere that you should have the octaver after the compressor. Mine is used to tweek the sound and tone and is always on.
7. They say there is one born every minute, but this is a first for eBay - well for us at least. Has anyone thought about asking him a question?
8. Our band also de-tunes by a semitone to help with vocals and guitar. I have no problem and 2 of my basses have a Hipshot and that is fine too. I usually leave 1 bass de-tuned for gigs and rehearsals and another tuned at concert pitch for practising. But it's easy to change if needed. The issue with the loud guitarist need sorting out. IME most loud guitarists are unlikely to turn down for anything. It will always be an issue so if you can't get them to do something immediately then look elsewhere.
9. Started on the recorder at primary school. Dabbled with a bit of violin (my dad plays) and the piano but didn't take either too far. Played the trumpet for 5 years whilst at secondary school. Gave up the trumpet and started on Bass 30 years ago and have not looked back. I have been messing around with the acoustic guitar for years too but have not really advanced for a while.
10. I have just watched 'Lemmy The Movie' on BBC4. There is a clip of him on stage where he is discussing his sound and technique. He jestfully plays some root / 5ths ala country style and then turns his Marshall amp (Murder One!) up and plays a bass line with incoporates strummed 2 string power chords. Now that was aggresive. Good film by the way.
11. All my bass stuff fits in the cupbord under the stairs and none of it is on show, except for a 6 string acoustic guitar in the dining room. For practicing I get a bass out and plug into my Tascam Bass Trainer.
12.
As a rule I love the 12 band SMX, it's one of my all-time favourite amps with everything I need in a bass amp and the sound to boot. These days I would stay away from the preshape which scoops too many mids and leaves too much bass and clack. This never bothered me in the 80s! I swapped out the valve for another and with the right EQ and compression the amp did a reasonable job in Ampeg territory. It needn't always sound like 'typical' Trace.
I've owned my 2nd hand Series 6 AH200 head for 16 years now and love it. I too have dabbled with the preshape but in a band situation it is lost (except for some slap). I go for boosting the low mids and it really works and cuts through the mix a treat. I get a lot of positive comments on my sound (ok I also play a Stingray as well). Loads of headroom to boot as well.
13. I much prefer the Pot to the Knob. If I have to deal with knobs there will be endless Knobbing.
14.
Guy Pratt 'My bass and other animals'. He's played with them all Page & Plant, Pink Floyd, Madonna etc etc
+1 It's a great read. In fact I may give it a 2nd reading soon!
15. A few years ago I auditioned for a well known local band as their bassist was unavailable for a gig or 2. A mate of mine was asked first but was not given much time and he passed and so did the 1st gig. For the next gig they asked me. I power learnt the set list and went for the audition. We got through a load of songs and I felt confident I could pull the gig off with minimal trouble. It was at a local pub that didn't have a good reputation and it was only covers. After the practice the singer and his father (who managed the band) went off for 10 mins. They came back and said the pub had called and knew of their predicament and said if they don't want to do the gig they didn't have to. The manager took their offer and cancelled the gig! I was gobsmaked and suspected something. The timing was coincidental and I had just nailed the set. They said that they didn't want to go out not sounding like themselves so passed on the gig. Why bother to ask 2 bassists to try & learn a set for some crappy local pub gig if they felt like that. They later tried to get it on as an original band and failed as that.
16. Hi & welcome. That is one intro. You obviously have been saving it up.
17.

That is so bad!!
18. I have the larger auto grab one which secure my bass very well. This looks ok if you want to keep you kit to a minimum.
19. I will admit to watching bits of I'm A Celebrity & Strictly and the guys from McFly have done well on both. I'm pleased Dougie won, not cos he's a bassist but as he came across really well. Mark Wright, the runner up, also came across well, although I will never watch TOWIE!
20. Any reason why the lefties were photographed upsidedown?
21. Mine died in a similar fashion some time ago. I planned on getting the MP3 version but have not got round to it. They seem difficult to buy now, are they still selling ew ones or do you have to buy second hand? I still use mine as a practice tool as it still functions with the bass ok and I plug my phone or laptop into the input and play along to the song with my cans on. Ok, the functions I liked are not there for manipulating the CD track anymore but this isn't too much of a problem. I edit any track with Audacity first to get any tempo or key changes sorted and if playing via the laptop I cut the bass from the eq to help a bit. £10 +p&p seems a fair price for something you can still work with to a point. Good luck. .
22. Perfect for miming with in the fake backing band
23.
Bit off topîc but this is Paul with a Dutch bass-player who does a great job... Pity that the voice is gone..

Oh so true
A real shame about Paul Young. Without the video you would think it was a cover by someone else. Good bass playing on this. I transcribed this song for some cool fretless playing a while ago. Tasty.
24. I've just put a couple of sets back on 2 of my basses that I soaked in meths for 24 hours. It works a treat, and they sound practically new. Not much meths evaporated either, so plenty left for a few more soaks.
25. Now that is cheap! And free postage to boot. I'm sticking to some middle ground here. I've been using Roto Nickel rounds lately and they have performed fine for me. Instead of changing them after quite a few months playing I cleam them in Methalated spirits, which you can read up upon. It really works, so get the strings that work for you and clean them when you feel you need to.
