Joel McIver, the new editor, has recently joined BassChat and may repsond to this thread. He came in with quite a flurry of responses initially, but I don't know how active he is at the moment.

Let's not forget Michae lAndrew "Duff" McKagan Nikki Sixx, born Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna, Jr

Metronomy have made Torbay famous with their album The English Riviera. Now just round the corner up the coast is Teignmouth where I have heard a rather well know trio come from.
I seem to remember seeing this clip in some other context on Basschat, but I watched it again recently and was struck by what a great example of what is to me the archetypal Stingray sound . The full-bore attack of this bass allied to the superb skills of the guy who's playing it.makes every note punch through the mix on this performance.:
Thanks for posting. That is one awesome sound and a great take on the original bassline. This whole arrangement really works well. Who is the guy on bass?

I miss my first decent bass which was Jap Jodee P Bass copy in black with a maple neck - The classic look. It also played and sounded great. It was nicked and it felt ages before I got another decent bass. I have been the proud owner of a EB MM Stingray for many years and and am quite happy with it (sorry to rub it in).

I assume you have read the fixes to the MM pup for this problem? I had the same problem and fixed it really quickly and my Ray plays and sounds the biz. The trick is to push the G string pup pole pieces in so they are flush with the main pup and then you can raise that end of the pup up so it is closer to the G string and you do not catch your fingers on them as they do tend to stick out a bit. It's worth a go before forking out cash on a replacement.

Our band detunes to Eb, and one other band in the past has as well. For us it's to help with the vocals, and it works.

I have had my MM 2 band eq Ray for about 12 years. At the time I wasn't looking for a new bass as I had 3 (Charvel, P-Bass & Aria SB) A collegue at work asked if I wanted a bass. I said not really, but what is it.?When he said it was a MM Ray I said that's interesting, and he let me borrow it for a while. I fell in love and it's my main bass. He has since bought another one to replace the one he sold to me. I can't imaginge not having it. A bass playing friend of our son (who plays drums) came round recently and our son let him try my Ray out. He has played a lot of basses and said it was the best thing he's played. So there you go 2 positive endorsements for the price of 1.

I have the music for it, but although I really like that era of Rush I can't be bothered to learn it for the hell of it. It would not make our set either. Good for you getting to grips with it. How did we ever manage before digital music?

I have taken a picture of my Hipshot on my Stingray. I go for at least 4 windings, but the problem with the Hipshot is the post is cylindrical and not tapered like the MM ones. This means you have to work to ensure the windings finish at the bottom of the post, so keep some pressure down on the string when winding and aim low! So re-string your bass & BTW all the windings are very minimal. I trust you have the proper MM replacement Hipshot with the smaller elephant ears to match? Mine is of an old P Bass which I do not have anymore, but fits the Ray fine, except the ear is a bit bigger and it sticks up further than the MM ones like yours.

I once bought a PS3 from a local seller off Ebay and also got the receipt. It packed up within 12 months and it was replaced under warranty from Sony. The receipt was just about readable. I don't think I mentioned I got it second hand though!

Pair of cheap £15 Sony headphones from Argos. Tascam Bass Trainer, but it doesn't play CD's anymore so I connect a line in from my pc or phome which plays mp3's. I also have a small 20w practice amp with headphones & line in connections.
We don't call them mistakes, we call them beer notes..
I can't wait for our next gig and use this with our guitarist, who drinks, when he makes a mistake - usually in one or more of his solos.

Saw them headlining T in The Park the other night on the telly. They had a bad sound and they were boring. I had to change channels after a few songs.

Assuming the new replacement cost, then my Ray is over a grand. I love it too much to leave behind at all. I might ocassionaly bring one or two of my sub £500 basses.

My Ray with it's new mirror scratch plate. Other to follow when I get around to it.

Good luck on your search for a cab. I am all for low mids and my TE AH200 delivers them by the bucket. Most of my sound is comes through a Celestion 15".

I've never been a fan of them and was disappointed at some festival coverage of them in the past. Although our band does a cover of Fire which I really enjoy playing and doing the Backing vocals. At first I was was not into the original and it was down to their sound and pace. Ours is true to the original format but feels more lively.
Got to agree Nige. It can be a very pleasing thing. I've taken to doing a root/octave thing at the end of the chorus on Billie Jean, so simple but my band mates think I'm genius
I did it in the outro (although no longer in our set). It really worked a treat, and I slapped it to boot!

Hi Joel & welcome. It's refreshing to see you actively engage on BC. I have been a regular subscriber for some years now and will continue to support your magazine. I have given up on the US mag. One comment that seems to still be true is that almost all the basses you review are quite expensive or high end basses that most of us will never be able to afford. For some a bit of gear porn is nice. For others they may be on the lookout for something more affordable. The last reasonably priced bass I can remember a review for (without thumbing through my collection) was the Tony Butler signature bass, which could cause me to GAS for as I could quite fancy a good looking cheapish passive bass. On another note I was told many many months ago by the parents of Rob, the bass player from Stars of the Search Party (he is a BC member), that he would be featuring in Bassicaly Speaking in the next issue. Unfortunately that was not the case, and to my knowledge he has not yet appeared. BTW everybody, he does play a 5 string, but does not slap or use a pick!

Thanks. Have entered. Good luck to us all! -
Do not boil strings. Use meths. You don't need a tube, just soak them in a bowl with the strings loosely wrapped around the perimeter and stand something in the middle to raise the level of the meths so they cover the strings, Leave for 24 hours and allow to drip dry. Works for me.

I stand on the opposite side to the snare as you have experiened, but this is due to the guitarist insisting on standing on the snare side of the drummer. I always used to stand snare side, but TBH is doesn't really bother me.

I've only been to Minehead Butlins once, and that was enough. I went to see a show one night. It was only 1 tribute band but they did 2 sets. The first set they dressed up in crepes & drapes & did a Showaddywaddy set, and for the second they changed and did a Madness set. It was very good and as they were a 7 piece band (I think) this worked to their advantage. I'm showing my age but I did know every song and most of the lyrics! I bumped into the singer at breakfast the next morning and congratulated him on the sets. He said that you would be suprised at how many people thought 2 different bands played. I don't know if they got paid more for doing 2 sets though. Go for it and have some fun. Although you are not exactly in a central location in Cornwall.
