1. Love the extra clip on the guitar case - so true!
2.
May I ask, what are the advantages of having a custom build?
For me it is quite simply that Fender don't make a five string fretless Tele Bass (and if they did it would probably be an awful lot more expensive and probably not as nice as the one Mr Shuker is making for me)
3. Don't know what your idea of reasonable is, but I'd agree with OBBM, look around in the UK first, as once you add in freight and taxes you will be looking at a significant bump in price. I've just ordered from Jon Shuker, and thought his price was great.
4. Got to gig this for the first time last night and really loved the sound. Hard to describe, but I got a very bassy tone, far more so than I would have attempted with previous amps as the definition wouldn't have been there. This set up was exceptionally articulate, plenty of punch and provided a much fuller bottom end to the band without increasing the volume levels. Very pleased to have made the conversion to valves and pleased to say this is not a heavy option either!

Two Bob Band

Get to try out the new rig - Peavey 120 watt all valve power amp and Digitech BP8 valve pre-amp. Sounds great at home but the acid test tomorrow night. Fingers crossed!
6. Slightly OT but it is amazing how much difference individuals can make to the set up and break down. I was working as manager/tour manager for a fairly well. known Texan blues guitarist/singer and we had the breakdown down to a fine art on the first tour - 15 minutes and we were all down at the merch stall selling CD's. Next tour, different drummer who liked to "wind down" straight after the gig, all of a sudden we were up to 11/2 hours. Had a chat and agreed the wind down would be after all the gear was in the van and evrything wernt smoothly from there on. Talk to the guys, tell them it is part of the job and don't let it happen again!
7.
Sounds interesting especially the fretless Tulipwood idea, I'm thinking of going down the fretless maple route again myself at some point.
Beedster's maple with a very nice gloss finish looks great but Jon recommended the tulipwood and I'm not going to argue with him!! I'm sure there's a thread with Beedster's board on here somewhere.
8. So, a combination of being in a band requiring a more retro feel/sound/look than my lovely Cort GB75, seeing one of Howard Bass Doc's old Tele Basses up for sale and Beedster's maple fretless board, along with the very unexpected money my mum left me recently, I've been in touch with Jon and today placed the order for this: (Jon's idea for the tulipwood - he says he will find a piece that looks just like maple but is much denser/harder wearing) Custom T bass 5 string 34" scale maple neck tulipwood unlined fretless board two way truss rod carbon fibre reinforcement 45mm nut width 20.5mm depth at 1st fret 22.5mm at 12th 17.5mm string spacing black side dots satin neck lacquer bone nut Hipshot tuners swamp ash body polyester basecoat Old Butterscotch translucent finish rear contour 5 string P pickup. tele bass control plate. black pickguard Thanks mum
9. Just added my vote to what turned out to be the most popular. You can buy excellent gigging/recording basses from Ibanez, Cort, Aria,Tanglewood etc, within that price bracket - it's just that we don't choose to
10. Might get quicker results looking for Ray Charles What'd I Say - I know Jerry Lee was the original but Ray's version seems to offer more results.
11. You listed most of the gear you're using but didn't say which cables!!!! Great news and will look out in the gig section if you ever venture towards the Sussex border.
12. We're doing "Serve Somebody" along with a lot of Dylan stuff. Just don't listen to (oh, alright, go on then for a laugh) Desolation Row - got to be the worst harmonica solo EVER (and that's saying something from someone who listens to Paul Jones' Radio 2 show)!!
13. Another great cable and some exceptionally fast responses and advice when working out which route to take - jack or xlr. Also next day delivery. Thanks Dave.
14. "I am not a music man" so what's with the Guild acoustic and numerous fx pedals in your feedback then?
15.
It is what one might call a "joke"
Erm....yes, hence the (is there an emoticon for I give up)?!
16. I think really with bass necks you don't want one that is so thin you can see it's ribs but also at the same time not so fat that you start getting folds and orange peel skin.
What's wrong with being a lefty liberal namby pamby well at least until some kids start rioting and looting stuff from shops, then i go into a hulk-like murderous rage. I'm back to normal now though
That was short lived EH
17.
I've asked Jimmy for a little more background but the inscription reads: "built by Jimmy Coppolo for Jason Langley. Thanks for all the years of friendship, support and the push to get these basses up and running!" Jimmy told me Jason was his best friend and I've spoken to Jason a few times via TalkBass. Lovely guy and super friendly, being Jimmy's mate means he seems to get first shout on quite a few of Jimmy's best basses & has owned several of them. I like the fact that this particular one was made especially for him
Then he goes and flogs it - very respectful Gorgeous looking bass btw - his loss, your gain!
18.
I'm fairly immune to neck profiles..
Glad someone else is, thought I was odd! Played a 5 string P Bass the other day, asked if it had a J style neck and was shown it next to the Jazz - big difference and I didn't really notice.
19.
Happy Jack > perhaps not.
Then again.....
20.
Modernest valve rig ever. Rackmount? Digitech? Multieffects? Parametric eq?
Only using the preamp setting from it and it is sounding very nice. It may yet get replaced by something more straightforward - keeping my eyes peeled! At least it's a Class D free zone - gotta start somewhere!
21. Thanks to great purchases from Chris (Beedster) and Mike (Zephead) and a couple of hours of perseverance, I am now the owner of a lovely sounding rig. A relatively lightweight (well I have to lift a far heavier mower in and out of the car on a daily basis for my work) Peavey Classic 120 watt valve power amp, and a Digitech PB8 valve preamp/multi-effects, going through my Purple Chilli 1x12. The perseverance was due to my very luddite leanings, I really wanted knobs to twiddle, but eventually got a nice sound out of the parametric eq on the Digitech. The sound is very full and rich but also exceptionally articulate - can really hear the bass being played (which means I'm going to have to brush up on my technique)! Seriously though, the definition and character of the notes is quite an ear opener. Looking forward to hearing it in a band setting and also getting adventurous enough to try a few more settings!
22. Just bought Mike's Digitech BP8. Easy transaction, fabulous packaging (must have shares in the bubblewrap company)!!
23. Just bought a Peavey valve power amp from Chris - lovely piece of kit (and the Peavey's not bad either) Seriously though, great guy to deal with.
