Irritating terms that non-musos use...
Mykesbass replied to Ian Savage's topic in General Discussion
There's actually a difference between slides and bottlenecks. Bottlenecks are hollow - they were originally make from bottles, while slides are solid like this one:
Now I had been thinking of making the same post, but according to the Dunlop catalogue, these are now called Tone Bars. Did somewhere back in the past the term slide guitar used to be reserved for steel guitar? -
Brilliant improvisation exercises

Interesting video - will work on some of those ideas this evening. Now, where do I find a drummer like that?! -

Don't know about Mr Fishman but Savoy is the only cabbage I'll touch - stir-fried with garlic and bacon! (sorry, someone had to) -
Great mix and bass sound IMO, Im not a great fan of picked bass or valve drive but sometimes its the right tool for the job
Absolutely hit the nail on the head - not a sound I would ever go for but really works well on occasion - including on this example. Radio 1 - what's that then?
Mike instead of Mic gets on my wick. Who the f*** is Mike?
Testing 1,2, Testing - anyone out there? MIKE -
And i did say " Is he really forgotten" Garry
Garry, hope you didn't get the wrong end of the stick by my referencing you wasn't in a negative way! I personally can't recall seeing too much about him on here up until now so well worth getting a thread going

Following the Forgotten Bass Players thread and Lowdown's comment, I thought I'd start spreading the love for this guy with two of my favourites! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3AnWOub63A&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjydOI4MEIw
Are the likes of Eddie Gomez, Tommy Cogbill and Roscoe Beck really forgotten? I suppose maybe in the UK. Garry
The OP was refering to the amount of discussion bass players receive on BC and as such Tommy Cogbill gets very little. I wouldn't have thought he would have made many Bass Player Top 20's either side of the Atlantic though I'd be delighted to be proved wrong!

Once again I must wave a lonely little flag for Tommy Cogbill: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tommy-cogbill-p65382/credits Not to be mistaken for our very own Tony Goggle

I know it's obvious but keep an eye on the local Cash Convertors - I had to recover a couple of gold discs that got nicked from the office I worked in from the Kentish Town branch. Hope it gets recovered. Mike -
IMO there are only these: 1a. Don't screw up 1b. If you do screw up don't draw any more attention to it 2a. Have fun 2b. If you're not having fun look like you are. All you need.
Very, very wise words. I've now played in three bands where the actual musical standards wouldn't win us any prizes but in all three we put on a good show, had fun and got loads of positive feedback and re-bookings.

Interesting question, and your thoughts about it being different for different brands could be correct, as looking at definitions of vintage it has more to do with quality than age. Therefore, any period of manufacture which is generally accepted as being good could be vintage wheras 70's Fenders never should be described as such Also can be used as noun or adjective, so according to this site, 2011 was a vintage year for Sue Ryder Basses!

Had a cracker of a gig last time we were here - Blues pub but our Dylan/Neil Young/Springsteen repertoire went down a storm. Fingers crossed for a similar result this time! Montgomery Street, Hove - the pub is called Poet's Corner but confusingly at Poet's Corner!
Except in my case it's about making me happy as I write, record and play for myself first and foremost ...
And fair play to you for being that way. I'm personally probably not of an artistic enough bent to appreciate that aspect of it - I'm more of a bit of an old tart of a performer (think Bruce Forsythe rather than Van Gogh)! Both as valid in my book and far more important than the gear etc.
IMO the actual music you play to other people (whether recorded or live) is the most important thing. Practising and gear are simply means to that end.
Wholeheartedly agree - all the gear, practice and technique and even musical style to a certain extent means very little to me if you can't get out there and make some people happy.

Just bought a Peavey Preamp from Steve - great to deal with and was sent very quickly and exceptionally well packaged - he even had the good manners to use plain brown paper to hide the Behringer box used for despatch

Link to sale in Amp & Cab section - is in that section as was on with another preamp but that one has gone. This has a lovely preamp sound but I don't need the effects side and find tweaking the pre a bit too much of a palaver - old luddite that I am! Re-awakening this thread as it got lost in the mire as I didn't bump it while I was moving then forgot about it. Bought this to go with a Peavey valve pre-amp. It sounded amazing, much better than the Peavey pre I am now using BUT I really can't cope with having to tweak it in a live situation. Bought from Zephead - here's a link to his thread includes 5im0ns very knowledgable views on the compressor!
