He's great on that - what a lovely touch he has! However, the thing that astonished me, he'd never heard the track, and didn't recognise who it was? Seriously? Do music colleges not really encourage any breadth and depth of listening?

Not a 'How To' book, but when you said about writing poetry I immediately thought of Simon Armitage. Looked up his name + lyrics and this turned up https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571377619-never-good-with-horses/ . Might be a constructive read. His work with the band LYR is very enjoyable.

No, still not seen it but want to. Talking of subtitles, I remember Channel 4 showed Jimmy Cliff's The Harder they Come as one of their opening week big films, showing that they were going to be diverse, anti-establisment and edgy. The watered down subtitles were hilarious!

Whole of that album for me. Love his earlier and much later stuff.

Rare, but due to retailers and manufacturers finding green the hardest colour to shift. Sad, as I think it can look great, as it does for these two, but guitarists (of all string numbers) are a very conservative lot, with black, white and sunburst outselling everything else.

I thought the sound I was looking for was more phaser, but listening around on Youtube, the nearest I could find was chorus, used in a very specific way, to give a slow swirl. Otherwise, I'd agree!

I know the preferred (not cast in stone) sequence is for distortion before modulation. How does this work if you want to use your amp's gain for distortion? Does the FX loop put the modulation in the right place? Thanks, Mike

Dire Straits, Calling Elvis, and Twisting by the Pool. Their first two albums are up there in my all time favourites. Like Making Movies, really like Love Over Gold, and don't mind Brothers in Arms, although the ultra modern production has dated badly. But those two singles - what on earth are they all about???

I stand corrected. None of the sources I found mentioned Thump, and initially thought the two related as synonyms. Looking further, there are differences, especially where sound is concerned. @bolo do you have a reference for the sub 100Hz definition please?

As this conversation comes up regularly (on here and elsewhere), I thought I would have a look around to see if there were any guidelines to what can be very subjective, describing sound. There are a couple of well thought out pieces from sound engineers and academics, and they seem to be fairly consistent (with enough variance to imply they haven't just plagiarised each other). I like this website as they have included frequency ranges to their terms. If you are happy to accept @40hz assertion that Thump and Punch are fully interchangeable then: Punchy: Good reproduction of dynamics. Good transient response, with strong impact. Just the one, a Carvin BX500 head (was lucky to get one that doesn't suffer with their known reliability issues, and a pair of wonderful Purple Chili 112 cabs made by @Cosmicrain of Zoot Bass fame. May get another head when I get gigging again but can't see anything replacing these cabs.

The Meters really do make it seem effortless!
